Jones should be nowhere near our best 22 on current form

Hello friends.

After your thoughts and updates on Sam Draper please.

Has been your #1 for a few years now, is that likely to continue in 2024 (when fit...is he fit?) with Goldy coming in as a Phillips replacement and someone who provides a chop out?

And if Draper doesn't play, is Bryan in line for games?

Thanks. And sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong place!

Draper is gonna be the number 1 when fit. Me (and a few others) are hoping Bryan will be #2 but it looks likely that it'll be Goldy

i'd take kelly over heppell every day of the week.

kelly mightn't be flash but he absolutely busts hit gut every second he's on the ground
And he is twice as fast.

If 100% I would want this team at the end of the year.

McGrath McKay Cox
Ridley Reid Redman
Durham Merrett Martin
Langford Caddy Gresham
Menzie Wright Davey Jr

Draper Parish Hobbs

Perkins Caldwell Setterfield Duursma (Stringer)

Edit: Tsatas hopefully banging down the door in the VFL.

So first thoughts after the scratch match for round 1

McGrath McKay Cox
Martin Reid Redman
Durham Merrett Martin
Langford Jones Gresham
Menzie Wright Hind

Goldstein Parish Setterfield

Perkins Caldwell Stringer Duursma (Tsatas)

*Potential to go with Draper over Stringer who becomes sub and Tsatas out.

Can’t see them bringing Caddy straight in, think that spot goes to Jones

Not for rd1, but a thought re: the 2018 draftees onwards...if all our sharper pick players make it, what does the side look like?

Ridley - mckay - mcgrath
Redman - reid - martin
Duursma - tsatas - durham
Perkins - jones - gresham
Caddy - wright - langford
Draper - merrett - parish
Setterfield - hobbs - cox - bryan
 caldwell

Fwd line is too tall but does highlight the need for quality in the small fwds im coming years....either from menzie, tex or daveys...or recruiting one

Pretty harsh but time to be a realist with what we have and our future prospects;

Back pocket; Jordan Ridley - star when on the park.
Full back; Ben McKay - serviceable, high quality role player
Back pocket; Andrew McGrath - serviceable who could be one of the better ones in a good system

Half back flank; Mason Redman - High quality role player in a good system. Think Brayden Maynard good
Centre half back; NEED A GOOD ONE
Half back flank; Nic Martin - I want to like this but like him more on a wing. Could use

Wing; Sam Durham - Good, high quality role player who is being used inside as much as the wing
Centre; Zac Merrett - Gun, star, captain
Wing; Xavier Duursma; Good honest role player, last week showed he can contribute.

Half forward flank; Archie Perkins - Unsure, is being used further up the ground which I am liking.
Centre half forward; NEED A GOOD ONE
Half forward flank; NEED A GOOD ONE

Forward pocket; Kyle Langford - Good, high quality role player who is borderline gun.
Full Forward; Peter Wright; Good high quality role player
Forward Pocket; Jake Stringer - Good, high quality role player, borderline gun

Ruck; Sam Draper / Todd Goldstein - Draper is not as good as he once promised, Goldstein is 35. Need tp upgrade
Rover; Jye Caldwell - Good honest role player.
Ruck Rover; Darcy Parish - Good player, borderline elite but not quite.

My two main queries moving forward are the forward group.

The forward group on paper looks a mishmash of match winners and goal kickers with high ceilings. How does it not consistently work?!?!?! A marking small forward is needed, a pressure small forward is also needed. As good as Jake and Kyle are, a small forward with elite speed is desperately needed.

The midfield is a mess. A lot of similarly athletic small midfielders, even the next wave of guys are small. When does it change?! Moving away from the size, we have no real match winner who can go through here apart from contract year Jake Stringer. Hell I would take a (1.76cm) Shai Bolton who can turn a game on it's head in a quarter. We have multiple good honest "match winners" who can perform across a game but none (bar Jake) who can turn a game on a dime in a quarter.

The 8 year plan that Scott was talking about will see over half this 22 not here if/when compete in 2032

Stringer is not a borderline gun imo he’s a bit part player who fills his boots against average sides.

Funny how when the criticism of Geulfi and Snelling and even Menzie is they do not kick enough goals. So we get Gresham who has kicked 7 goals in 4 games and yet he is no good either. Sure he is not a fast pressure player and we 100% do need one or two but I do not mind Gresham in the mix if he is going at just under 2 goals a game.

Unfortunately When Essendon looses everyone is a spud who should be traded for a bag of chips because a 3rd round pick would be better for the future.

That’s how it goes on here I guess
