Gonna have a crack at my Round 1 side and it’s probably going to be very similar to others already posted. Oh well.

Not considered: Ryan, Sheed, Hewett, Culley (curse)

Backs: Barrass, McGovern, Hough, Duggan/Reid, Cole, Witherden, Jones
Mids: Gaff, Hunt (wings), Kelly, Yeo, Ginbey, Reid/Duggan
Rucks: Flynn, Billiams
Forwards: Allen, Darling, Maric, Cripps, Long, Brockman, Petruccelle
Sub: Waterman
Emergencies: Chesser, Hall, Bazzo
Emergencies for the emergencies: Jilliams, Rotham, Hedwards, Jamieson, Ledwards, Johnston, Burgiel, everyone else
Pretty much identical to how I have us going into Round 1.

Potentially only the sub to change, however I don't mind Snake their as he gives some versatility.

MC may want to add another runner, so Chesser may get the nod as sub ahead of him. However I would like to see us stay away from using Chess as the sub and travelling emergency this year as much as we can. Out of everyone he needs continuity and consistency and would much rather see him play a full game of WAFL (albeit practice match) than a quarter in the AFL side.

Hewett may also may be a sneaky chance to come in as sub if he sorts the foot out, but doubtful as this stage.

Im starting to suspect Culley might play Rd 1.
The next couple of weeks with intraclub and pre season games will tell us more. He was in with Kelly, Ginbey and Yeo doing centre clearance work today at training.

Not bad, but need a rotating back on the bench. Assuming Long is your small forward, Ginbey is your mid, whoever is preferred out Waterman as Maric as a tall forward. Team balance requires us to have a back as the last bench spot. Witherden or Bazzo preferred for mine.

FWIW, splinters did a combined ranking of the listed players at WCE and Freo based on their likely impact this year

I’m ignoring the Dockers players and where they rank simply because it’s not worth arguing about.

The order of the Eagles players from lowest to highest was :

44: Tyrell Dewar
43: Jordyn Baker
42: Loch Rawlinson
41: Coen Livingstone
40: Harvey Johnston
39: Archer Reid
38: Jai Culley
37: Harry Barnett
36: Coby Burgiel - Too low
35: Callum Jamieson - Too high
34: Zane Trew
33: Andrew Gaff - On his way out but this is still harsh
32: Harry Edwards
31: Jack Williams
30: Clay Hall
29: Rhett Bazzo
28: Josh Rotham - Too high
27: Alex Witherden
26: Luke Edwards
25: Jack Petruccelle
24: Ryan Maric
23: Campbell Chesser
22: Jack Darling - Think he’s more important than this
21: Jake Waterman
20: Noah Long
19: Brady Hough
18: Elijah Hewett
17: Jayden Hunt
16: Jamaine Jones
15: Tom Cole
14: Jamie Cripps
13: Tyler Brockman
12: Dom Sheed - Too high. Has to get on the park
11: Bailey Williams
10: Matt Flynn
9: Liam Ryan
8: Jeremy McGovern
7: Tom Barrass
6: Liam Duggan
5: Eliot Yeo
4: Rueben Ginbey
3: Harley Reid - Love the kid but this is a pisstake, still a first year player
2: Tim Kelly
1: Oscar Allen

Most of it’s reasonable but there’s a few I think he’s got wrong

HF - Long Darling Cripps
FF - Brockman Allen Maric

Find the wings the toughest spot to pick at the moment. Hunt to a wing and JJones to half back would be my choice, but they seem to like him off HB.

Waterman unlucky and could easily be in that side.

Ginbey x 2 so there's a spot for Waterman on the bench. Unless that's supposed to be Reid (whom I think starts at the expense of Cole)

Can’t currently see Bazzo being heavy enough to handle most KPFs. But he could be a good 3rd tall. Either way i agree he needs games to improve (and I don’t see the point of playing Witho and especially Rotham - both have had more than enough games and have now been passed).

Plus it seems unclear right now who our next KPD is. And given Gov’s unreliability I’d have thought it a bit of a priority. But HEd doesn’t seem up to AFL and then there’s ????

Bazzo has beefed up already.

He is only into his 3rd season and looks bigger in the hips and arms. Big kp defenders take years in the gym to reach their peak. Until then they olay as 3rd tall defenders.

While I'm excited to see the young brigade take over, I would love to see Gaffy have a Renaissance season where he reverts to his gut running wing role picking up 30+ touches but moving the forward and being damaging with them like his AA years. I don't think it is likely at all but he has been such a servant to the club I would hate his last couple of years to taint what has-been an exceptional career.
I think the game has passed him by but still holding some hope he can go out with a bang.

It would be a good year if Gaff did finish his career off playing well.

If we move away from the kick mark game to the overlap handball and chaos running game that actually suits Gaff. He can run all day providing part of that overlap running in waves and backing each other up in the next phase.

I had a go at the rankings. Very tricky!

Top 10 are in no particular order, same as the bottom 10.

There are a lot of players who I like but they are either coming off a long term injury or are unproven at AFL level

What are we ranking?

Current best to worse?

Most important?

Likely to improve would be interesting.

Good question. I interpreted it as most important.... for games this year. NOT for the overall squad over the next few years.

As in... if it was a Grand Final tomorrow, which players would you want on the team and whose absence would hurt most.

To clarify, right now in my opinion Cripps is a better player than Duggan, but I would rank Duggan as slightly more important to the team

I don’t think Gaff should be anywhere near best 22, definitely WAFL unless younger players are injured.

After a few injuries, I've changed my round1 squad.

Edwards comes in for hall
Gone with Petrucelle over Gaff
I can't split Maric and Waterman
Reid's too good not to be in the midfield

Witherden-Barass-Cole
Duggan-Mcgovern-Hough
Hunt-Kelly-Jones
Brockman-Darling-Cripps
Long-Allen-B.Williams
Flynn-Yeo-Reid

Waterman-Maric-Ginbey-Petrucelle

Sub- L.Edwards

Bumping after our latest match sim

No Flynn (injury), BWilliams moves into the ruck and Jamieson comes in on the bench. Assumes Gov, Brockman, and JJones will be available.
