We'd have to be the dumbest counts in creation to pick Hotton in the top 10, especially as we're about to delist his older brother.

He does a lot of pop over the top handballs which just don’t work in the AFL, but that should be an easy fix.

Interestingly his stats in the National Champs this year show he has the smallest inside 50 ratio for the leading class of mids. By a long way. That suggests to me that most of his work is between the arcs or behind the ball.

He did kick an equal high number of goals though (compared to other mids) so he still has scoreboard impact.

Once again the only one with a clue are Val twomey and the recruiters. Getting scared due to ‘mock drafts’ is akin to being worried due to a David king prediction.

No, in a bad game he couldn’t get near the ball and showed he had no tricks to impact a game outside of his run.

In a bad game he showed all the same traits that people have smashed Reid for.

Reid’s ability to go forward and impact the game in other ways - whilst bringing his team mates into the game is what is separating these two as prospects.

Search Reid’s grand final. Only played half a game before getting injured. Only 8 or so touches. Kicks a goal and a goal assist.

It’s going to come down to what you’re looking for and want to see. For me, Lindsay has the physical traits. Reid’s understanding of the game might be best in class however.

Only way he is as good as he is. Because he doesn’t have the same tools as Lindsay for example.

Most of his footage shows him linking the play between the arcs.

Very unselfish stuff.

We all view and watch football differently but I can't see many similarities between he and Clark. Maybe except for the long hair. And let's be honest, if we draft Reid and he becomes a better player then Clark, isn't that a good thing that we are improving our list and team?

I love Reid, but the Clark thing is also probably there....a little bit in the way he plays a unique brand. Both have deficiencies in their game but both are properly different players. If Clark had been a more driven personality and less injury prone he probably could have been a very special player. Same as Jake Stringer. Both liked the lifestyle more than the discipline.

Reid and Clark are both architects more than builder's labourers. Both seem to see the game unfolding ahead of them and create opportunity through unique distribution.

To me if Reid has the right attitude he'd be a no brainer. Pendlebury is probably the obvious example of a player that creates more than bludgeons his way through the game. I think that's the comparison with Gryan Miers too. He has that ability to find the most creative and unexpected delivery inside 50.

Steele, Phillipou and Macrae for now. If we take two pure inside mids they might not play much for 2 or 3 years. No side carries 4 specialist inside mids. Smilie and Lalor types might appeal for that reason because both are probably going to play a lot of footy outside the midfield. Hobbs and Ward are both struggling to play regular footy because they are pretty much specialist clearance players with no second strings.

Agree…Suns picked Elijah Hewitt at #7 & then traded him out after struggling to recover from his ACL!

The problem with Smilie for me was watching him, he often gets caught but breaks tackles due to his size. That advantage isn't going to be there in the big league. Langford looks like a player who has always been a bit slow off the mark so has developed his game to make up for it.

I feel like Smilie could be an absolute star or absolute spud. Langford looks a lot more like a safe bet with potentially a bit lower ceiling.

The difference between Lalor & Smillie is Lalor plays mid & forward, Smillie only mid due to his lack of contested marking

The 3 highest rated prospects likely at our picks at this stage

  • Smillie
  • Langford
  • Reid

Have all shown that they can play forward. They will all get that opportunity for the next few years.

What’s probably important is that it’s unlikely P7 or P8 will get as many games in year 1 as Pou and Wilson. Our development is further along and our list is much stronger.

So getting traditional Mids isn’t going to be an issue as they will be able to develop

He made more errors than I remembered. Travaglia looks actually like the excitement factor along side him. They'd be a good pairing. Lindsay is quite vanilla. Travaglia a bit more flashy.

Moraes is a pretty good kick overall but not sure he's a pure mid.

I think you want to think 5 years down the track and if we think we are a chance at LDU types you probably want a bit more of a balanced recruiting policy.

We shouldn’t be drafting on what if scenarios.

You take BPA and work out what your list needs from there.

I think you've made the connection before but there's a bit of Side bottom about Reid. Just looking at his stats, Side bottom kicked 25 goals in his first season, assuming that was off half forward. Would see a similar role for Reid.

Smillie would probably start out as a half forward too but perhaps more a bigger Owens type?

Been thinking a lot about this. Pou ran a quick 20m at the combine, but many complained this year about how he was slow. Pou showed in the latter part of the year that if he was hitting the contest at the right time he was dynamic. At the beginning of the year he looked slow and flat footed.

So I am of the belief that footy nous around the contest is so much more important than a few hundredths of a second in a controlled setting.
