Now now. Lampers was making the general point that Viney is tough enough to play through pain. I think we can all agree on that point.

Once he chewed his own leg off so his ingrown toenail wouldn’t stop him running out there.
That was my point. Maybe it was just talk about Harvey and what he did to play around the time Viney was struggling that I had in my mind.

I think it’s a stretch to suggest Viney would be upset about playing through an injury to his shoulder when he was fully informed about the pros and cons.

Petracca’s case is a bit different as that was during the cut and thrust of a game. Nobody knew for sure the extent of what he had. Melbourne wouldn’t be the only club to go aggressive and get it wrong. Port with concussions (plural), Richmond sending a guy back on in the VFL who then did his ACL. It happens.

Viney seems to have had a shoulder issue for a while now. Looks to be in agony for a few minutes then plays on. Though I guess they give him a needle in the break or something

Deadset convinced we should at a minimum trade out 2 of Oliver, Trac, Viney or Sparrow

If we go into 2025 with all of them on our list we are cooked

I believe it goes all the way back to that big collision with Sydney stack (tigers) back in 2019.

Most likely nerve damage or impingement that just gets jammed from time to time. Painful but no lasting effects.

Why trade Trac? I don't get that line of thinking at all. Works his ass off at training, hates losing, clear top 10 player in the comp, arguably our most dangerous forward who can be just as good in the middle. You don't just trade players like that. Same with Viney. Has given everything for the club. Synonymous name at the club. Great leader on field and at training. You don't go throwing players like that away.

Oliver and Sparrow I can live with. Sparrow has done f* all since being drafted. Oliver probably could do with a change of scenery. Our midfield seems to function better without him. As much as he's been a contested beast for us, his off field problems could be a problem for setting a decent culture at the club. Plus his contract is a shocker. I'd hate seeing him at another club, but it could be a win win for him and us.

I’d happily trade Sparrow and Oliver but at most I see the club parting with one of these guys, Viney probably the most likely scenario at this stage. No way we accept our window is closed and try to rebuild, too many jobs at the club on the line for that to happen unfortunately.

Yeah Sparrow isnt going anywhere, they only just re-signed him at the start of the season and he hasn't caused any off field issues or headlines.

Cash in our chips while we can, bloke can’t hit a target in 50 and his value will diminish greatly every year moving forward.

In addition if we get 2 first rounders we can use one on Sam Lalor who is an 18 year old Petracca with 14 years ahead of him.

Nah this is crazy, he’s still a top 5 player in the league when fit.

Be that as it may, he's had more score involvements than anyone in the league over the past five years.

If Lalor was a sure-fire '18-year-old Petracca', he'd be the unanimous number one pick, not a guy in the latter part of the top 10.

You lost me here Mich0. Oliver and Sparrow you can make cases for, but Trac and to a certain degree Viney you don't want to just trade away for picks

I love Max Gawn but giving a 32 year old another 4 seasons is ludicrously bad contract management.

Somehow I won’t be suprised to see Tmac get 3 more and BBB another 2.

Three years (2025, 2026, 2027), but I get your point.

That being said, while he's banged up, his form has barely declined so not entirely unrealistic to think that he'll still be going for a while, especially since he missed so much footy early in his career.

3 seasons - 2024 is one of them

Ahh yes 3, I counted 2024 in my head.

Guess we shouldn’t expect to bring in another ruck anytime soon then.

If he hasn’t demanded mega money, I don’t mind it. He might see out the last bits as a kind of mentor, ruck coach sort of thing.

Wonder if they see Verrall as a viable backup from next year onwards, not sure though.

Gawn got three years to end of 2027, not four. But it’s still an unusual move but there will be some level of logic.

You’d have to assume Gawn has traded security of more years for a lower amount than he might be able to get signing one year deals which might run out if he cops a serious injury next year for example.

It wards off another club poaching Max like Essendon did with Goldstein.

Big rucks going to their mid 30s is also not uncommon.

Finally given all the media noise it sends a message of commitment from who is probably the most popular player at the club.

We totally need to have some kind of plan b, since we brought in Fullerton as plan b and seem to have come to a conclusion that the plan wasn’t going to work

Fingers crossed it's not too pricey, but tend to agree. He's someone who has earned the right to decide when to finish up, and his form is still excellent.

Do think it's a bit of a PR exercise after this week, but eh.

jhong is perhaps more informed with this – do you think Verrall could realistically be the backup next year, or do you expect he'll still need another year of development?

Flagging we arnt looking to rebuild until Tasmania comes in by the sound of it.

Think it's pretty clear that they're looking to retool as opposed to rebuild. There's cases of that being successful (Geelong and Collingwood recently), but then also the horror stories of teams holding on too long (West Coast and Richmond recently).

Time will tell which category we fall into; however, if the gameplan remains the same, it'll almost certainly be the latter.
