The stage could not have been set better for this Gather Round clash at Adelaide, with both Fremantle and Carlton entering the game undefeated. You wouldn't know it if you paid any attention to the AFL media however, with Carlton being backed to hilt by the Vic centric media, while Fremantle remain largely ignored, despite having beaten 2 of the same opponents. But, Fremantle just love shoving it up the Victorians right when they're being disrespected the most. Think back to our relegation to Alphabet Stadium in Geelong when every other team would have played at the MCG as a fine example.

Carlton are a certainty to win, just ask a Carlton supporter. This time last year they were spitting on their own players, now they act as if they're the inexorable 2024 premiership team. It really is all quite absurd and nauseating.

We Freo fans have a strong sense of injustice having been robbed of victory thanks to diabolical umpiring in the final minute of our game in Round 11 2020. Watch it again here,

or better yet stick needles into your eyes.

Carlton supporters will tell you they really just don't care about Fremantle, we're meaningless, nothing to them, equivalent to the scum they scrapped off the bottom of their shoes. This is all for show, a fancy type of gas lighting. Deep down they're terrified that their team is just a McKay or Curnow injury away from being irrelevant again. Carlton supporters are so toxic because they are literally equivalent to Fremantle in terms of success over the last 30 years, i.e., none. They have achieved nothing since Fremantle entered the competition, with their last premiership coming in 1995. They haven't even been close since.

Last time they met
Round 17 2023, Carlton defeated Fremantle by 53 points at Optus stadium. A horrible night for Fremantle, possibly the lowest point of 2023.

What's different this time around?
Everything. The previous game can be written off. Confidence and belief is incredibly important in elite sport and the Dockers currently have it. Last season they were bullied around the ball with an undersized midfield battling it out. The return of Nat Fyfe and the emergence of Hayden Young as a mid has completely changed the way Fremantle are playing the game in 2024. Add to that the in-form backline of the competition headlined by Alex Pearce, Luke Ryan, and Jordan Clark, plus Caleb Serong and Luke Jackson competing for Brownlow medal votes, and it becomes clear that Fremantle now have the tools to dismantle Carlton. What has changed most is the effort brought to the contest. Fremantle have been able to apply intense pressure to their opposition so far in 2024, while simultaneously playing in a way that prevents pressure being applied to them.

In my opinion, and in all seriousness now, I think the key reason that the media personalities are staying quiet on Fremantle is they do not trust us yet due to 2023, but also our approach has been to take away what our opponents want more so than play our own identifiable brand. This is becoming JLo's signature move. Spend the first quarter figuring out how to beat the opposition, then implement the necessary changes at quarter time to dominate the rest of the game. While the average and less engaged punter may have watched our game vs. Adelaide and concluded that it was a bunch of useless hacks kicking a ball around, the more observant realised that Fremantle had just followed the protocol titled "How to beat the Adelaide Crows" - drag them into a contested low scoring scrap of a game. Under no circumstances engage in a shootout. The exact same applies to Carlton who have the best key position forwards in the game.

The thing about gun forwards is they can be stopped if you restrict their supply. The classic 100 goal a year forward has almost gone extinct because of modern day team defence.

Carlton are certainly the hunted in this game. They will first try to play their style and Fremantle will try to take that away from them. There are strong similarities between Carlton and Adelaide, it's just that Carlton are much better at executing the same game plan because they have better personnel. Fremantle will bring the pressure and focus on not allowing Carlton to move the ball through the corridor. Fremantle are not one-dimensional though, when the game is on their terms, they are looking to put the hammer down, having chained together 8 and 9 goals consecutively in Rounds 1 and 2.

There's been a few Carlton supporters leaving their laughing emotes on our board the last few days. It will be great to wipe that grin off their faces with a win on Saturday.

Prediction
This is a real tough one to predict and the data suggests an even contest. Squiggle has Fremantle getting up by 2 points and so I too will back in Fremantle to scrap out a win. I will add though, that if the combined score of the two teams is >160 then Carlton are probably winning. If it's <160 then Fremantle have likely succeeded in restricting Carlton and won the game.

Enjoy everyone! A win here and the lid is well and truly off.

Had a quick look through the Carltank thread on this game. Holy shit what a bunch of arrogant flogs. What have they actually done to warrant such floggery? Heaven forbid they ever win anything.

I hope we bury them into the floor, break them completely so they go on to lose their next 20 games in a row.

The stunning autumn weather continues in the west. So does the rise of Freo! The decade of dominance has begun and while some were nervous about Brisbane and others scared of the crows there were others who know what we are becoming.

I think we will win... we may not as Vossy has them playing well. What I do know about this team of young stars, talent rich, disciplined and determined. We won't turn up and roll over. Remember when we knew we would give the game a shake or win? That our team would grind the opposition until they quit. Now we win with class, speed, structure and a unicorn doing unicorn things. Sure they have Curnow, but we have Amiss. And sure they are big through the middle but they have no one to go with Dogga.

Fyfe will be a brute, Sharp will continue to build.. and while he is getting back to mark in defence and run forward for a goal Acres will realise he has been run into the ground. And when you doubters see they have gone a half of footy only scoring twice you will start to believe, if only a little, if only a smidge.

There have been many disappointments being a Freo supporter. This team and what we are becoming is not one of them. We can defend and pile on scores. A percentage in the 140's! And we haven't put it all together yet. Yes we will lose this season, but, we are at the start of one hell of a ride! I can't wait to see what we do to the fancied blues on the weekend.

LFG!!!!!

Hey guys,

Apologies for the intrusion.

Firstly, good luck for this week and the rest of the season.

Just wondering if anyone here is going to this week's match? I'm trying to secure four tickets for the WB v Geelong match and it's being played immediately after your game.

For those of you who may be attending the Fremantle v Carlton match and don't plan on remaining for the WB v Geelong match, I'd be keen on purchasing tickets off you (provided I can secure four) and I'd be prepared to purchase tickets off you at full price (effectively this will mean you can attend the Freo v Carlton match for free).

Please hit me up with a PM if you're kindly able to assist. :)

My favorite part of the Carlton preview was about 4 sentences in when it identified Hayden Young’s rebound off half back as a key to us winning the game.

Carlton's back 6 is not as good as I thought. McGovern and Kemp (likely replacement for Marchbank) on Treacy and Taberner, should be a win for us.
Who ever is on McGovern must stop him marking the ball.

Cripps, Cerra, Hewett vs Brayshaw, Serong, Fyfe should be a win for us.

Obviously, McKay and Curnow is a big win for them, but if we control the midfield and slow the ball down it should be ok. If they get a lot of 1v1 opportunities, especially who is not on Pearce then we will be in trouble.

BLUES

B: C.Marchbank, J.Weitering, Z.Williams
HB: A.Saad, M.McGovern, N.Newman
C: O.Hollands, P.Cripps - C, B.Acres
HF: M.Owies, H.McKay, M.Kennedy
F: E.Hollands, C.Curnow, L.Fogarty
FOLL: T.De Koning, A.Cerra, G.Hewett

Outstanding write-up thx mattis.

You got me thinking about our slow 1st quarters.

Maybe JLo is playing rope-a-dope. 'Go on then, throw everything at us, show us what you've got, spend all your chips. Now we'll back ourselves in to outsmart and outlast you in the next three quarters.'

If that's his game then the biggest roped dope has been me.

Immense write up, well done Mattis.

Love the word "inexorable". That's a powerful feeling, a statement of sorts. This is a big game in the making and I'll sadly have to work (considering chucking a damn sickie!). Their 'juggernaut' offense verses our 'immovable' defense. And the clash of the titans tussle in the middle - will be most telling. It's a game I'm desperately hoping the Dockers have the mechanisms to win, I saw a bit of Carlton in the Opening Round and against the Tigers, they were not perfect by any stretch. They left a bit on the table here & there - the turnovers and how the teams reacts could also be telling in this one. It would have been great if Darcy was fit and firing already - I would love to see the Triple J effect up & about early, but alas....not yet.

I think....it's only Round 4, but I do feel if we win this the footy media might sit up & take notice. I know fans immediately recoil at that, they want to be 'under-the-radar' because they think the pressure will buckle the team, but this is a different team this year and it can't live in its shadows forever. Time to embrace the light! I think the guys are ready and I hope they can go 4-0, it would set up things rather nicely.

You never want to get too carried away or ahead of yourself. But there's something there, brewing away....a feeling has returned, and I know that feeling. Even if nothing happens this year, the future is about to unveil something very special I think. Let's see :)

A bit of an obscure question I know, but is there a preferred bar at the oval for Dockers supporters to gather (round :)) and mingle?

Hoping Tabs can keep Weitering busy, need to keep Weitering off of Amiss and Treacy.
I believe that’s his role. I like how he rubbed up Adelaide the wrong way last week. Some supporters called him a dick but he was actually a genius.

No, but please don’t tell your mates what position Young plays

Hmm just watched that video. where did the umpires steal the game from Freo. There was a free kick awarded down field after a late bump by Fremantle player on the Carlton player kicking the ball in from a deliberate out of bounds. Fremantle are my team, but looks like lack of discipline caused the loss not Umpires

I didn’t see many errors in our game, but sadly looks like Carlton are being favoured
