Speaking to a person at Southport, they were thinking we would be interested in Brayden Crossley as a stopgap for next year. He is a forward ruck at 198cm who got desisted by the Suns 4 years ago after a drugs saga. Has been playing well at the Sharks in the VFL.

Personally I don't see it. He looked quite tubby and slow on the VFL stream that I saw but the person I spoke to apparently has connections to the Sharks (or could be just another typical Labrador/Ashmore character blowing smoke up my ass).

Off field and culture issues aside any chance we end up like Melbourne after they won the flag?

They haven't got back there because of a lack of a key forward. The off field issues aside we are not to different:
  • strong defence
  • strong midfield
  • forwards:

Pickett - Cameron
Fritsch - Lohman
Neal bullen/Melscham - Ah Chee
McDonald - Hipwood
Luke Jackson - Smith/Fort

They had brown and McDonald and Jackson none of them outstanding on their own but the sum of the parts where more then the individual. Not too dissimilar to our key forwards take brown and replace him with a younger player they fall away take out Jo and replace him with a younger player....

I think our forward line is still strong Hipwood is capable of 40 to 50 goals a season Lohmann and Morris will only get better can't see a massive drop off we only have 4 players over 30 and all are still playing good football

I am hoping the main difference is ball movement.
After 21’ they went back to a slow a laborious down the line style of play and haven’t been able to consistently play a quicker handball and run style of game since.

I am not sure how many exactly but we took over 20 forward 50 marks in the Grand Final. That is ball movement and movement in the forward line not necessarily the quality of key forward.

No Joe will definitely be a challenge and we'll need to adapt

Melbourne is an interesting comparison in terms of no real key forward.

I think we do have better firepower overall with our smaller / mid forwards.

As you say ball movement a big factor to - as well as Melbourne putting defence ahead of all else. They want to be hard to score against as a first priority which always makes it harder to score.

The other thing about ball movement is that a big part of it starts off half back these days. The dees got a lot of drive from Salem in 2021. He dropped off after through a combination of form and injury. Bowey has gone okay there but they don't seem to have replaced Salem very well.

Zorko would be a danger of dropping off given his age. With any luck Kiddy can get back in form. Wilmot also gives a heap of drive back there. So we SHOULD be okay.

I think it will be interesting if Zorko does drop off, or if the club changes his position (which would be madness imo). As much as Kiddy was a big blow, Zorko had an amazing season. And kiddy did not tend to run out games well whereas zorks was super fit.

Don't get me wrong - Kiddy is an absolute weapon. Apart from his left peg has a crunching tackle on him and decent intercept mark.

But we have an AA half back flanker who will be 36yo at the start of next season so we are likely to get a drop-off in output from him.

Could be good to keep Ezra Mam company while he's off the field.

I love this bit the most.

“If defensive running and pressure is an issue, Dunkley doesn’t fix that. He hasn’t been a top-50 player in the league at all for defensive-half pressure acts in his career and in terms of overall pressure, the Lions had three midfielders alone who applied more pressure acts than the 25-year-old”.[emoji848]

Perfect example of how stats are only meaningful if you know how they work. We’d never see someone like Hoyne say something as terrible as that.

If anything, I think the Melbourne forwards that year (and Collingwood's last year) show you don't need elite key forwards to win a flag.

Despite looking out of shape, I legitimately think he's the most talented mature ruck not on an AFL list. Problem is he's predominantly a ruck and what we need is a forward who can relief ruck. I'd rather have Hugh Dixon if we were picking Southport players because he's shown a greater ability to kick bags.

What about Rayner and Bailey
  • Morris (admittedly 2nd year, but can take a grab, kick a goal, and good use)
  • Linc (coming off an ACL)

I must admit I do find it laughable that after so many years of the medja telling us that 'Flaky Joe' would never win us a flag to now 'we can't replace him' that they think our whole future rests on one player, one position. No Joe no Lions? No way. The kids are all right.

The talk of the town has been that we had a key forward free agent on the hook for the end of 2025.

When I scrolled through the list of FA’s I could only find Fogarty and Allen.

Given Fogarty has re signed…was it him and he’s had a change of mind?

If it’s Allen, I am very surprised given he’s co-captain.

Any thoughts on who we had (or still have) in our sights?

A 19 yo is never this year, but 203 cm forward is always worth another look.
A tall is usually given many years (5-7) on an AFL list to prove that they can't play before being discarded. If this guy at his height gets cut after 2 years, that says a lot.

Also we need mature depth in case of injury. If we want a promising ruck/forward, we already have that in Henry Smith.
