Respectfully, this makes no sense to me.Correction, Relying on draft picks when you don’t have the right support system to nurture and develop them is folly. Support system include recruitment, senior and development coach, good senior player leaders..
Just look at Geelong. No high picks due to their success, but able to bring in talent and develop them in the right way.
Yes, look at Geelong. 100% look at Geelong. we are not Geelong, but look anyway. They don’t play the draft, they just win by trade and evolving tactics on and off the field. And they keep winning. They have a unique situation too. We don’t. We haven’t got those off-field treats to offer players they have.
Now look at Essendon and North. They try to rebuild. They can’t.
We can’t manufacture leaders.
We chose Ross Lyon. He is a leader. Tick. But North got the Hawthorn guy.
But we can’t just sack Steele as coach.
We can’t prevent Hawthoen from pinching Battle. North couldn’t stop the poaching. Horne -Francis. Etc. Support system is not bad. we try . North tries. They all try. What are unique advantages. Nil? Zero i would say. The better our low draft picks become, the more chance they’ll be plucked off. If NAS signs, it may also be a short term contract - (who knows?) but if it is, we know why.
What is the path?
Work through the system.
Accept our limitations.
Accept that any success must come at the expense of other teams, also trapped in a system.
So my only hunch, is that tactics (And Ross Lyon has used this effectively - had used it effectively, = boring, stalemate stops the other team and we pinch a few the other way) and trade. try to get the right combination of B Grade players and use them smartly.
I reckon a team of seasoned B Graders who are highly disciplined and tactics that are ruthlessly followed, is the best tactic for us to get moving and generate momentum. trade and trade and win and win or try to win.
