2019: Uncertain, because it's yet to be seen what sort of career Comben will have, but mostly trash
2020: Still too early to tell but looks promising, maybe as good as 2013 when all is said and done (#)

2022 & 2023: Too soon to tell

Some would say our player development hasn't been the best over the last 10+ years. It's hard to argue with that. Here's the list.

The Durdin, Neilson, Dec Watson, Josh Williams and Will Walker picks absolutely crippled our depth for a loooong period of time. We still haven’t fixed the damage that was done with those picks. Combine that with the Perez/Mahony stinkers and it’s no wonder we had no depth for so long.

The ones that were the worst were nielson over touk

Walker over balta

Mahoney over Warner

Everyone’s always an expert after the fact

Every single one of those picks except Durdin I was critical of on the night. Many of those guys were taken well before where they were expected to be taken. Particularly Will Walker and Daniel Nielson, those guys were being talking about as late 3rd early 4th round picks and we reached for them with early 2nd round picks.

I’m talking about ppl naming gun players that were taken after said players that we should have taken.

Contrast that to the way Richmond drafted in the second round over the same period.

It is why I am so curious/hopeful in North’s recruitment over the last 2 drafts and impact Will Thursfield will have with the hand he was given.

A lot of the problem with those names was development.

We gave up on a lot of those players too early. Brad Scott was ruthless with the young kids and didn't have the patience for players who needed that fourth or fifth year to develop them into reliable AFL players.

The Josh Williams one in particular is ridiculous to me. As a second-round pick in 2016, he was described as a raw prospect from FNQ, with enough athletic attributes to be an exciting long-term prospect. He showed promise but was delisted at the end of an interrupted second year.

I don't know how you look at that example and say it was 100% a drafting error.

Spoke to him at a family day and he said he was competing with Billy Hartung for a spot ... Nek minnit both gone.

Walker and Perez both done by injury. I never really followed the draft before joining this board but 2016 was the first year I took any notice. I think I wanted Florent and Bolton, Jy was definitely a better pick than Florent (who is a good player tho) but Bolton was heaps better than Williams. I wanted Balta too cos I'd heard very good things about him in his school team, particularly about how he stepped up in finals even at higher levels.

But he was being played as a efender alot by then and I can understand why we didn't pick any more defenders after getting so many so quickly.

Anyone know where Byron Pickett Jnr is playing this year

And if we nominate him in the rookie draft and noone takes him he could be a cat b rookie and a free hit we could take? could have done that last year too

I've not heard anything to suggest there's a serious footballer there although I hope he has a good year somewhere. Seems a decent kid.

I thought he’s not playing football?

Prospects go under microscope

The speed demon in this year’s AFL draft class can be revealed.

GWV Rebels midfielder Archie Taylor clocked the second-fastest 20-metre sprint time (2.83 seconds) in the Coates Talent League’s Rookie Me under-18 national pathway testing history, with records dating to 2015.

Only future Eagle Jack Petruccelle (2.82 seconds) has beaten that time in this particular testing, although they are both short of former Sun Joel Wilkinson’s scintillating 2.75-second performance at the 2010 draft combine.

Northern Knights defender Jett McLaughlan matched Brisbane Lions endurance king Harry Sharp’s 2019 record in the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test with a score of 22.4.

Richmond coach Adem Yze’s son, Noah, a 189-centimetre forward and potential Melbourne father-son selection this year, snuck into the top 10 for Oakleigh Chargers in the same test (20.8).

McLaughlan also placed in the top 10 in agility testing, while talented prospect Taj Hotton – brother of Saint Olli and son of ex-Pie and Blue Trent – was top 10 in four different tests, including finishing fifth for agility.

Players from the Victorian-based clubs took part in testing at Narrandjeri Stadium in Thornbury on Saturday, ahead of the new season starting on March 23.

In a draft tipped to be midfielder-heavy at the top, one key forward already turning recruiters’ heads is Sandringham’s 193-centimetre target Harry Armstrong.

Fingers and testicles crossed it’s Josh Smillie. Looks awesome to me. We need another big body mid going forward.
Yes, thought the same thing as good as the other mids sound the moment I read 180cm I couldn’t help but think we’ve got a few of them already.

Looks like another Bont clone to me……but there’s been a few of those over the journey that have yet to live up to it.
