what about O'Farrell?

Harry O'Farrell (15)
Calder Cannons/Vic Metro
DEF, 196cm
Talent League: 2 games, 11.5 disposals, 2.5 marks, 0.5 tackles

A masterful shutdown defender, O'Farrell can play at both ends of the ground but looks most comfortable playing back shoulder and coming over the top of packs in contested marking situations. He has the length and sneaky-good closing speed to play on a variety of talls.

or Berry

Joe Berry (unranked)
Murray Bushrangers/Vic Country
FWD, 180cm
Talent League: 5 games, 13.6 disposals, 4.0 tackles, 3.2 goals

The in-form small forward across the country is Berry, a full-tilt pressuriser who thrives in the chaos of forward 50 contests. He's a chasedown artist, has a beautiful left foot set shot and can work up the ground to boot. Berry's defensive mentality and talent with the football will make him an in-demand small forward.

Both players would surely come under consideration (at this early stage).

We do need to avoid getting carried away with early “ratings” by random “experts”. The actual draft order will be significantly different to that suggested by well researched and informed “Draft Watchers”, let alone the ten minute experts who get consideration because of content.

I watch the prospective draftees closely, as closely as I can when I don’t see a game other than the televised ones. I think I can offer an informed opinion, but would never profess to be an expert. I am very sceptical of bandwaggoners. There are some decent “resources” on the BigFooty draft pages, as well as some absolute nuffies. Similarly the “experts” some “reputable” organisations throw up have little or no credence. They are merely collators of available info providing lazy “content”.

From my limited exposure and “collation” of information, I totally agree O’Farrell would be around the mark in the teens. More stopper than the favoured rebounders these days, but I believe we all need a genuine stopper.

Watched quite a bit of vision on Berry over the last couple of days. To date, he is probably the clubhouse leader for my favourite small forward to show up so far this season (Bradley was good for SA v Allies as well). Still plenty to play out, but KPD and small forward are certainly positions of interest for most Blues followers.

Thanks Coona Blues for that insight. Many posters have talked about us needing our next Weitering which is why I picked O'Farrell, I would also see the two of them overlapping careers onfield.

It doesn’t make sense to pass on top end academy/FS talent. The discount is too good.

Campo boys could be natural replacements for some of our aging half backs. Ollie might become a midfielder when he adds some size and Binns might not kick on. Acres and Hewett won’t last forever. They are versatile enough that we can mould them as direct replacements for our aging players.

If we want a player within the best 12-15 it is going to be best to trade up and out of Ben’s range to pick that player. Then we make up the points with seconds and thirds, go into a deficit if we have to.
that's it, we want to improve our current squad but we also have to have sucession planning in place for the next generation amd as you say, if they are 10-25th players on the list at a reasonable dicount? even better

We have to be honest with ourselves, our youth is some of the worst in the comp, which was to be expected with our trading. There is a balance to be had between going hard at the next 3-5 years and not completely butchering the future.

Top 15-30 talent at a massive discount shouldn’t be turned away.

For sure. I think we need to back our current list to win a flag. We have enough stars. You can't have them everywhere. Pies won a flag last year without a key forward. Every list has some holes. Just need to keep refining, add the right role players, keep our players fit, whilst drafting the next generation. Plus, hope for some luck.

We could trade hard and make moves that would give us marginally better chance in the short term, but I'd rather play the long game. The longer we can stay in the finals mix, the more chances we will have to win flags. I know that's been Chris Scott's logic and it eventually worked out. Prefer that, then the now or never approach, that would see us put all our chips into the middle, knowing that it will result in a lot of pain down the line.

Like the idea of both of these guys. O'Farrell has the height and the shut-down ability, Berry has the ability to get a goal or three.
I'd prefer a mid with express pace, but ...

I have been watching a bit of the youth games and highlights in preparation for Champs and if I were North or Richmond, I'd be pretty disappointed with the top crop this year. None of them really stand out as future superstars. Smillie seems to be shaping up as pick 1 and I think I'd probably pick him there, but JHF or Reid he is not. Not to mention the others currently predicted top 5 like O'Sullivan or Draper who I wouldn't pick until 8 or 9 most years.

Smillie is a big kid with a nice kick, but is he dynamic enough to really get the most out of his kicking? He doesn't burst through packs and doesn't have that seemingly god-given core strength that makes certain players un-tackle-able so I can't see him using his kicking to his best ability out of stoppages. In transition, he isn't an elite runner, not a great mark despite his size. Think he ends up a stoppage beast who occasionally gets the chance to do a nice kick. Good player, potentially a superstar if he can really improve his endurance, burst or marking once hes in an AFL environment.

Should be a few decent KPD options around our pick which is nice. If we take a smaller player first then I would like us to have a look at Gabriel Stumpf with a later pick. He a mobile forward who plays taller than his listed height. Doesn't seem to be on many draft watchers top 40/50 but I think he would be a great option to develop down back, seems to read it well enough and his profile would make him a great foil to Weitering.
I don’t know who he is and haven’t seen him play, but just checked his profile and he has a late birthday, so may very well end up 200+ cm player.

Luke Urquhart a standout for WA. Kid can kick it 60m with ease and is super tough inside. Looks a great prospect but I'd like to see some more precision kicking before passing too much judgement. Certainly an athletic specimen at the bare minimum.

Malakai Champion very impressive in a few passages today for WA too. Electric small forward with good skills but looks like he loves a flop which has hindered his game so far imo - Gone to ground for a free when he could have stayed in the contest and likely reaped the benefits.

Zeke Uwland for the Allies (GCS Academy) looks an absolute ripper. Fantastic foot skills, good agility and a great runner. Looks like Gulden 2.0 unfortunately for us.

Leo Lombard for the Allies (Also GCS Academy...) certain top 10 pick at this stage, he's an absolute freak athletically. Explosive power, fend offs, jumping on heads, breaking away from the pack with pace. Seems like he has great skills too and good game sense but tries to do a bit too much on occasion.

Sam Marshall had a couple of great runs in space, fantastic leg speed and seemed to hit targets while running at top speed which is a great sign. Was one of the Allies best last week vs SA too.

Not much else to discuss so far from the half imo.

Might be a super late pick or rookie, but I thought Burke provided some good skills and I thought he kicking was some of the best on the day. Cochran has potential, just shanked a few kicks and you'd want to see if that was a one off or his normal.

Lombard is very exciting and its a pity we dont have an academy to keep producing talented footy players.

How about The Rebels Jonty Faull? Seems to be kicking goals every week up here....Might be the future Jack Martin/JSOS

Not including other bids 12-16
Sheehan has Ben as a late teens to early 20s pick but that can easily change but assuming you’re on the money with 16, I don’t see how that’s hard to get ahead of.

Best/worst case scenario we have pick 18, if Austin can’t engineer a trade up 3 or more places, he isn’t very good.

We can’t take in any more picks than list spots, so to get in a first rounder before the Campos and then have enough points for the two of them in 4-5 picks is not as easy as it sounds, especially if a bid comes earlier than expected. Clubs will know this just like we knew Freo had their hands tied when we bid on Henry.

We might need to go into a deficit in 2025.

I think moving ahead of Ben's pick will be possible at this stage. The question is whether it'll be worthwhile.

It's likely we have to massively overpay just to move up a few spots. Compared to the overs we get if we trade our pick into next year. And it probably still doesn't get us into the top 10 where blue chip players are.

We would really need to like the player available.

Agree with this. It’ll probably need to be done on draft night too so that will complicate things even more.
To move up you would think it would cost our first and a future second minimum. You can trade for a bloody good player for that value. You also run the risk of downgrading our future first when matching if bids come earlier then expected. Also as mention above getting enough points in few enough picks to match two bids will be bloody difficult without our future second. (If we are trying to hold our future first.)

I could be done but until we know where our picks are then it’s hard to speculate

I’m sorry but if Brisbane can trade a heap of junk to get enough points for pick1 and pick 15 whilst finishing top 4, then we can trade up 3 spots, it’s not hard.

GC found points for pick 3, 9, 14, 26 last season.

The Dogs last year traded up from 10 to 6 to get Sanders, then Croft at 15.

We are talking about a late first round rated player and a mid second round rated player and people are talking about going in to deficit, it’s madness.

If all these other clubs can trade up a lot and find lots of points and we can’t, then Austin isn’t cut out for the job
