First post for a while here, given its in this thread tells you how my 2023 season went lol.

Here are my initial thoughts on some starting selections.

Def:
Daicos
- Yes, another preseason into the young goat. Early captain option
Sicily - Yes, Hawks are looking to recruit a KPD in off season to free him up. Expensive but think he can do 115+.
Stewart - Maybe, prefer the two above. Has the 0 priced into him but will be 31. Will depend on value available
Sinclair - Eh, priced ok. Solid but bit of a nothing pick. Not a bad option
NWM - Maybe, seems to struggle away from Victoria or in the rain. Will be priced at 480k and I can see him doing 95+.
Sheezel - I will lock if they say he is playing down back, I think they want to utilise him forward though. Watchlist.
Ryan/Houston - No, maybe upgrade targets.
Ridley - Probs no, Think he will do 105-110 but things always go wrong with him. Will probably sit out due to durability.

Currently - Daicos, Sicily, Stewart, NWM, Sheezel

Mid
Bont -
Too expensive at 700k, think I'll pass and get him asap
Oliver - Real strange one, will consider with a full preseason and some hype articles. He wasn't at his best leading up to his hamstring.
Dunkley - Upgrade target, probably better when it gets colder.
Dawson - Yeah I dont mind, this feels a bit like Petracca last year where his kicking has killed him. He should be doing 120+ if he cleaned up a lot of his kicks.
Laird - Upgrade target, will be 30 and had a few body issues this year.
Neale - Upgrade target, will be 31 so cliff isnt far away.
Brayshaw - Locked for me, hasn't really been acknowledged but his TOG has jumped to about 85% from 79% last year since he got over his knee issue. All going well I see him 115+.
Serong - Solid option, happy to pick or upgrade later. Similar to Brayshaw TOG has shot up on last year.
Rowell - Not sure, don't really trust him but could do 120+ one year.
Anderson - No, probably loses a bit of CBAs to give time to Flanders and Humphrey
Steele - mmmmm I love me some Steele but he will probably work his way into the season. Few body issues as well. I feel a bit more comfortable picking guys on the rise than potentially on the decline, watch in preseason.
LDU - Looks like a 120+ but had a fair few injuries this year. Probably explodes but im a sucker for avoiding high scoring injury prone players.
Zerrett - Expensive but 115 and no injuries is the norm for him so I'm not opposed to it. Tags means hes probably an upgrade target.
Parish - No
Walsh
Cerra - Bit like LDU massive scoring potential but done 3 hammys in 2 years. Not cheap enough for me to go there.
Mills - Forget it, he doesn't seem overly enthused to play midfield and is injury prone. They got enough kids coming through who need ample time.

Currently - Dawson, Zerrett, Brayshaw

Rucks
English -
Yeah Think I'll just pay, him and Daicos the main captains. Gawndy worked for 4 years and we have half of that here.
Gawn - Yeah. Assuming Grundy is gone, this is an interesting one. At 32 I'd be very surprised if he could shoulder a massive load for 23 games. Wonder if he gets new support.
Grundy - This is a bit of a conundrum if traded. He'll be very cheap (490k) and showed great scoring power solo rucking. I trust him more to play every game than Gawn but he isn't half the ruck Gawn is. Watch in preseason.
Darcy - Wait and see if he's traded, they may want to use Jackson a bit here and there, plus he is very injury prone. Think I'll sit out.
Xerri - Pass, can score but meh player. Also injury prone. Think Goldstein is still better than him
TDK - Not going to be cheap enough but bit of potential here. Can always play Pitt beside him.
Rowan - Thanks for 2023 but pass, priced at max.
Briggs - Is a gun but can he match the ceiling of Gawn/Darcy? Not sure. Pass but will watch.
Bryan - The dons have something here, unfortunately they probably play two rucks. Think he will surpass Draper in 1-3 years. Might be fwd status.

Currently - English, Gawn.

Fwd
Petracca -
I'm not paying 650k for him but Jesus Christ he's been the worst non own bar English. Has not dropped in price for 3 months. Ironic because he fell to Steele price territory last year.
Macrae - Wait and see but hard to start with the leader of Supercoach ISIS at the helm
B.Smith - Again his coach is a supercoach terrorist who prefers to play Caleb Daniel over 3x AA and young superstar in the midfield. Has had a few body issues. Would need to be made very clear in preseason he will play at CBAs, is reportly unhappy playing outside centre bounces.
Flanders - Yes, new coach is hopefully not brain damaged enough to play him in the 2s or out of position. Although this interim coach put Swallow back in the midfield. Has a massive work rate and snout.
Himmelberg - Not at GWS with Whitfield/Ash together back there. Was a gun last year but playing like a potato this year.
Sheldrick - Yes, did 90 odd when given a mid time (4 games) with terrible tog and 40% CBAs. 300k is a terrible price but there is keeper potential with a big preseason
Windhager - No but watchlist. 3rd guy behind Sinclair and NWM means he wont score enough down back to justify 300k.
Lynch - Will be 240-280k likely 280k. Not sure here, 31 and injury prone but there is definitely 100-150k in him, potentially more.

Currently - Flanders, Sheldrick, whoever role changes in preseason.
Great writeup!

Butters and Rozee are two major mid targets as well. Rozee as a MID only will be a lot more POD.

How far has Parish fallen this year?
Is he worthwhile next year?

I remember the media and ex players having ago at piggy ...maybe 2-3 years ago.
Saying he was to happy hand pass and non dangerous .
Then he started kicking it and busting in and out of the stoppage...

Parish needs to get dangerous imo.

Currently - Flanders, Sheldrick, whoever role changes in preseason.

Elite list - covered most of them. Few more I think could out-perform price.

Sam Taylor: Averaging 93 for the season but has a five round average of 118 since returning from injury. Looks to me like he has been given more freedom in his role and may get some more ball use if Himmelberg moves clubs. Another thing to consider is he is 24 and could be taking the leap in terms of production and SC scoring. Risky because he is a KPD (but with us losing Dawson, Daicos, Day and potentially Sinclair, we may need more options).

Sam Walsh: Averaging 104 for the season. Has done 117 and 111 in his uninterrupted seasons. If he gets a preseason in and Carlton give him a better role, then he could be a great option at the 550k mark.

Patrick Cripps: Picking whether this man will go 115+ or 100 is a lottery, but he could be a good start at around 525k. If he fires, amazing. If he doesn't, that is a decent price point to use to pick up players who are must haves. Probably an avoid, but an interesting watch for the rest of the season.

Tough to know really until we know player movements, the rookies we have to build around and who are the best buys as premiums (Bont, Taranto, Dunkley, Marshall, Tom Green, Rozee, Gulden this year). But always fun to speculate.

Mate, you’re in first spot in 2023. 2024 should be the least of your concerns. 😂

3 guesses what the pod is about this week Jords!

A few more to throw up for discussion. Couple POD premos and some midpricers. None of which I will probably end up taking, but will most likely feature in a preseason variation of my team.

McCluggage. Priced at a 90 avg and has been a 100+avg player since 2019. 5 round average of 111 at the moment showing he can return to that top form.

Whitfield. 128 3round avg and 111 5round. Definitely in hot form. At his best and fit, is definitely a 100+ avg player. Dare to dream with Lachie.

JDG. Shown he has a very high ceiling. A bit more consistency and we could be looking at a 110+ avg player.

Heeney. Lol, ok, next.

Ashcroft. Will only get better. I'm guessing he will be priced around 450k next season. If he steps it up, can see him going 550k+.

Braeden Campbell. Definitely has another level or more to go up. Midpricer who will get some attention.

George Hewett. If he can return to form and role of old. Absoloute steal.

Gresham. Potential 85+ avg player and only 25yrs old. Another midpricer to add to the madness.

Wardlaw. Sheldrick. Humpa. Amartey. Around 300k, all should be worth a punt.

Ashcroft did his ACL, he won't play next year if the Lions are smart.

Will Brodie find his way back into the FREO side ?

If ESS get Ben Mckay ......is that good or bad for Ridley ?

I know some see this thread as negative and too early, but as activity dwindles in the last few rounds of the season, I believe this thread is handy to have going, as it encourages users to continue to contribute.

Also, lots of things that occur in the last few rounds of the season often carry over into the next year.

Ashcroft will be out for a while .
If he doesn't play next year .
Lock for the year after .

Hewett on watch list .

Heeney ....gets 🐴 about ...

I took a look at my history in recent seasons and my rank hardly changed post bye. With the extra trades, teams end up too similar. It's gotten a bit boring tbh. If it wasn't for this board, I'd be done with SC.

I think I'll lean towards a MPM side in 2023. I think mostly GnR with a couple of mid-pricers doesn't work, because you have to nail the couple of mid-pricers that work out of the pool (eg. this year I did mostly GnR with Bruhn and Flanders). Whereas if you take a heap of them, you're bound to hit a couple. As long as you take enough genuine SP captain options, with 35 trades and boosts, there's no reason a mostly MPM and value picks side can't work.

Corr - no Zieb. Lots of kick-ins. Ball will be down there a lot.
Coleman - no Rich (I assume). Lots of kick-ins. Averaged 87 last year.
Erasmus - he's a maybe, but if he gets fitter, he can take JOM's spot in the middle. Good player, lots of talent, but his tank is putrid. Might be a early too early, but worth a watch in preseason.
TDK - if Pittonet is out of the side and he's the main ruck.
Sheldrick
Windhager
Liam Ryan
Steele
Touk
Mills
Grundy (lock if he goes to Port)
NWM
Flanders
Witherden: no Hurn
Hinge/Milera: Any chance Brodie Smith retires or loses his spot?
Day: superstar in the making.
Dale
Macrae
Wilmot: no Rich?
Crisp: if Pendles loses his CBAs and he gets them back
MCrouch
I'm sure there are others I've missed (plus returning injured players that I've forgotten about)

Will Brodie find his way back into the FREO side ?

If ESS get Ben Mckay ......is that good or bad for Ridley ?

Hard to say. With Cox looking good as a 3rd tall it’s possible Ridley might get pushed up the ground to HB.

We all know how good a seaguling HB goes and Ridley would be at more wing contests to intercept in this scenario.

In general “Stay away from Essendon unless it’s Merrett or a rookie” is good advice

Do games in the VFL count towards deciding a players position?

Wondering if Grundy will qualify for R/F if he keeps playing forward in the VFL. Would be a lock as a forward assuming he moves clubs.

I was thinking a bit about this and of course it's not about finding 25 guys who are stars - because we won't be able to afford them. It's who are the 2-3 bonafide stars you buy pre-season and plan on keeping all year, and who is value. Ideally, value that you think are a good chance to be a top player in their position (for me this year, Rozee, Gulden, Dunkley).

Looking at my current Round 21 side, I've got only 9 guys who are still on my list from Round 1 - plus 2 I chose to Roughie back in.
2 are dead rookies I've never found a way/the need to cull.
2 are set-and-forget ruck combo of Stick Insect and Holler Marshall, which has worked out great.

Everyone else is about timing the upgrade, buying when the inevitable ebbs and flows has someone discounted - or at least affordable. Or in Bont's case, just because you bloody need him and have to find the money.

In short... whatever you do.... buy $600k rolled gold premos when they're about $500k (works for Zerrett every year).

Zerrett .

Dusty in the past post byes 400k

Go with ya gut on which 600k Kent's will be worth it .

Bont this year been a great starting pick .

Most of them drop down at some point .
It's all about timing if you can jump on ...
