Training 2024 Pre-season training

Really excited about our forward line next year.

Marra and CW are primed for breakout seasons next year.

With improved structure and forward entries (with the revamped footy department it won't take much to improve significantly in these areas) Naughts will stamp himself as a superstar (stoked we've locked him away for 9 years!)

Naughts and Marra improving set-shot accuracy to league averages will have a big impact (but bewildered that we haven't appointed a specialist goal-kicking coach yet - have I missed something?)

I rate Lobb. However, if Darcy takes the next step it is game on for that position. If Darcy takes his place I have zero problem with Lobb acting as a backup for Tim or Darcy - contracting Lobb was still a smart move (also good insurance if another Club throws ridiculous money at getting Tim).

Westy has now cemented a place as a decent pressure small forward (tackling, breaking tackles, score assists).

I would like to see Caleb Daniel as a HHF (defensive nous, disposal skills, leadership).

Small Forward backup/bench: Arty, Scott, Garcia? (hoping Arty and Garcia can take the next step).

Key Forward backup: Kamis (very solid utility player), Darcy/Lobb

Much to look forward to.

And also add the potential emergence of Charlie Clarke who is a genuine small forward. Should play a few games this year. Will get under the skin of opponents. A real pest with lots of energy. Will compliment what we have up there nicely.

Really like to see us go with something like this:

FF: Weightman JUH Lobb/Darcy

HF: West Naughton Artie

C: Bedendo Trelor Williams

R: English Bont Libba

HB: Coffield Keath/JOD Dale

FB: JJ Jones Richards

Int: Macrae, Sanders, Daniel, Harmes

I expect we start with Lobb but eventually Darcy will replace him. The other advantage with Darcy is that if Jones goes down (at this age this is likely through the season). Darcy can go back.

I am a huge fan of JOD and while Keath had a shocker last year - his best is still very good and so IF he is back to his best he may start ahead of JOD but like Lobb/Darcy as the season progresses he will push him out.

Poulter is ahead of Bedendo and probably should play but Bedendo has a very high ceiling and want to see him given a chance.

Arty is speculative, VDM probably has more runs on the board and Charlie may put pressure on him (hopefully) and even O’Driscoll could push him but at his best we look our best. He brings pressure and unpredictability and has a great connection with Flea, Naughty and JUH. Aa does West with Darcy (almost freaky).

Was hoping to find a place for Garcia - his disposal is poor but he has speed and gets his hands on the ball. Both he and West need to be given time to take over from Libba.

I assume Macrae will come back to form - even a crap season by his standards still saw him averaging 25 touches and am backing him to get back to it.

I have said a few times I like him in the middle and want to see mini-teams on ball of:

1. Bont, Trelor, Libba

2. Macrae, Sanders, West/Harmes

This makes it very hard to tag Bont and allows him to go forward and rotate JUH and Naughty off enough to keep them fresh and at full pace.

In the backline - Coffield is straight in if he is fit. At 193 and a mobile mid tall marking backman he fills a gaping hole we have had since Wood left. When we played Jones/Keath and JOD (or Gards or Darcy) we looked to slow - all are 197+. Playing Darcy there does have that problem but also he seems to read the play so well that this might also work.

This line up is exposed to the power small forward. Duryea is our only traditional option for this and I am a big fan so he may play if we are up against at team with one of those players. JJ is OK but makes up for it with incredible speed and penetration and so am going with him. Harvey G may develop here but isn’t there yet and so our options limited.

Actually seen a few players training at the club this morning doing some solid running in the rain. Naughty Doc Dale jonesy Laith & Clarke. Good to see
Probably smart, since they will probably be thrown into another 2km test come Wednesday. Rather have one under my belt a few days before hand, than jump off the plane from Bali and go straight into fitness testing. They have probably set themselves up to do better, than if they just rocked up on the day.

Players from all clubs still train while on their Christmas break. They all have programs to follow.
If not they will be found out pretty quickly I’d say.
Noticed a few clubs already back training. Lions crows bombers

Bombers start early every year because they know they finish early……it never gets old

contract year for Jakey too

Funny thing is played under pagan
At 17 went to Bali and party was great … threw up for first 2 weeks but ability doesn’t go away.
It’s not the training it’s the player

Does anyone know what might be happening at the club next Wednesday mid morning eg training etc thinking of catching the train from Warrnambool
Should be training out on the ground Wednesday usually from like 10-10:30, don’t believe they do match sim tho fridays the best day if you can make it.

Don’t quote me on that though if you make the trip in and it’s not right 😅

This is in general, not a set schedule so I can be wrong.

Mon - 9am+ skills, lots of drills

Wed - 9am+ Lighter outdoor sessions, I've noticed this is more of a ''cardio'' day, more running and less contact-on-contact

Friday - 9-10am+ Generally match sim of some variety, train on players, probably the best day to go watch.

I had a look at training this morning. I'm not going to comment on the drills because I'm not qualified to assess them. Also, I don't think anyone can come away from a training session with any meaningful and lasting impressions. It all looks good because it bears minimal relevance to match day conditions. So, here's a few things I can comment on: Treloar and Naughton ran half lap/sprints while the rest were involved in drills. Later Naughton joined in to 'touch football game simulation'. Garcia ran half lap sprints but took no part in drills or 'match sim'. The first year recruits didn't train, perhaps given a day off or in the gym.
A few 'gut feeling' observations: Darcy is still very thin, particularly in the upper body and he may find it difficult to compete with gorilla-like backs and rucks. Judging by his running, he's still working his way into fitness. I really hope his other attributes get him into the team sooner rather than later. Arthur Jones looks fitter but he will need to show that he can win his own ball in contests. Not sure Harmes is a walk-up start for Round 1, can't see much there that stands out. He may be picked for his experience, however. I like Poulter for a Round 1 start; his end of season form was very solid and he looks very fit. His kicking is a bit loopy and may be a reason why the Pies moved him on.
Weightman and Bramble looked prominent in the time trial.
There was a lot of close-in stuff with players extricating themselves from tackles to handball off to 'team-mates'.
Unless my eyes were deceiving me, English did not train nor did Richards or Keath. Others may confirm.
All in all, it was great to observe the players working hard in their drills on such a beautiful Whitten Oval morning.

Thanks for the write-up, but I think most will prefer the ones where our collective group of 40-odd players all look faultless and we will struggle to lose a game in the upcoming season

No doubt the boys were training the house down, so much so that it will delay completion of the renovations at the ground.

I was at training for apex 1 hr.

Just on DognBones report , agree Darcy is a stick figure , not convinced he runs
a full game out that well right now , he dosn’t replace Lobb just yet.
Great hands as we all know .

Richards trained. Looks great.

Skills generally good , but one drill was just shocking to me.
The drill ended with the player running into goal on a 45 degree angle and kicked at around 35 metres with zero pressure.
My estimation was about a 10% success rate.
Bloody woeful for professional footballers.
I stood behind the goals, can’t believe how far some of them missed by.
Artie , skills for a guy of his size need a lot of work.
Never looked like kicking one in this drill , but he had plenty of mates.

LJones trains like he plays , medical staff will have heart palpitations watching him train.

Not that I'm an expert on playing surfaces but if there's one better than VUWO I'd like to see it.

Surface looks amazing ,and the new infrastructure gives me goosebumps.
Never thought I would see our club rival the “big” clubs with this stuff.

They sell coffee out of a beautiful new structure, but toilets locked !
Does anyone at the club know what effect caffeine has on old bulldog plumbing 😩
