Ports Season Prediction: Lack of wingman hinkleys(afl media's) excuse

AFL Season Prediction: Vic team wins flag , afl 360 claims Hinkley is Australia's dad

The broad assumption is that gws and Carlton will pick up where they left off but it’s not always that easy. Those 2 teams along with port, Melbourne and Sydney are the hardest to get a read on. They all seem like they should make it but I expect 4/5 will make the 8. I feel like Melbourne are most at threat to dropping out completely. Brisbane and Collingwood the only locks and then that leaves 2 new teams which I suspect will be out of Essendon, crows, gc, freo and Geelong.

I can't remember a season where so many teams came in with such an optimistic narrative. Freo, West Coast and North are pretty much the only teams not expected to compete for finals - and even West Coast and North are expected to make serious improvements given the young talent they've added. Reality dictates that 10 teams miss finals and so there's going to be a lot of disappointed teams that don't perform to anywhere near expectation.

Why are freo not expected? They were pretty good in 2022 and have an emerging list. I expect they’ll improve. And will either sneak into the 8 or just miss out. They’ll be in the 7-10 range.

2022 a long time ago now. Since then theyve lost Schulz, Henry, Logue, Acres and Lobb and added Jackson. They finished 14th last year and i suspect Hawthorn and GC will finish ahead of them this year. Just dont see where or how they win games to make finals

Their starting midfield is elite and if Fyfe can wind back the clock I just can’t see them being around the bottom. They’ve got some good kids in other lines too and besides west coast the last couple years it’s never easy winning in the west.

Plus I don’t think there is a huge amount of quality that has left freo, besides Schulz. It’s like when our supporters got hugely upset about losing Howard, wingard, ladhams, Amon and duursma.

If you were to compare the freo midfield to that of the crows it’s chalk and cheese but you have crows 4th and freo dead last.

And then us at 10th? Really?

I don't think Freo will win the spoon, you have to be really, really bad as a WA team to do that (ie current West Coast team). They're still good enough to win a bunch of home games and pinch a few on the road but I can't see them playing finals.

I guess my point overall is there's going to be a team or a couple of teams who people expect to play finals who will end up winning very few games.

2022 is the exception, not the rule at Freo. I dont rate Longmuir, I dont know who is kicking winning scores for them to be finallists and their squad is paper thin, despite a good midfield.

Crows lost 5 games by under a kick and 2 more that they were leading at 3/4 time. They are close. Very close. Technically made the finals last year as it was.

I see us missing finals and not having another run like last year.
