I usually like to start from a base of who’s a lock to be Best 22 and start from there.
The last few seasons, there are usually 18-19 “locks”.
This year I count 16:

Atkins
Blicavs
Cameron
Close
Dangerfield
De Koning
Duncan
C Guthrie
Z Guthrie
Hawkins
J Henry
O Henry
Holmes
Miers
Stengle
Stewart

That leaves 7 spots from:
Bews
Bowes
Bruhn
Clark
Conway
Knevitt
Kolo
Mannagh
Mullin
O’Connor
O’Sullivan
Parfitt
Rohan
Stanley
Tuohy

Smokeys/Would not be shocked:
Dempsey
Neale
Stevens

Very tough selection battle because the mood from the club seems to be more experimental eg Holmes to HB, O’Sullivan to the wing/Stewart to MF etc.
those kind of moves change everything.

Almost agree with your 16, but I suspect Blicavs not available.
I also think Kolo will not be rushed in.
That leaves your 15 +
Bews
Bruhn
Parfitt
Rohan
Stanley
Tuohy
MOC
Conway
What is the sub rule this year?
18 +4, and a sub, or 18+5?

Barring a setback, he surely plays Round 1. We all saw how the team went without him as our season ground to a halt late last year.
Of course, but if he's non contact now, I question that he is ready for rd 1. That's all.
Why wouldn't Blitz be available? He is in full training just non-contact

Team I would like, and think would give us a decent chance against the relatively quick Saints:

B: Mullin, SDK, Z. Guthrie
HB: Holmes, J. Henry, Stewart
C: Mannagh, C. Guthrie, Duncan
FO: Stanley, Danger, Bruhn
HF: O. Henry, J. Cameron, Miers
F: Stengle, Hawkins, Close
INT: T. Atkins, Bowes, Dempsey, Tuohy
Sub: O'Connor

EMG: S. Neale, Kolo, Bews, Parfitt

**Rohan and Blics in for Dempsey and Tuohy if available

Feels like a nice blend of toughness and class, with a fair bit of speed to boot too.
Like the run in the back half. Good mix too, with height and experience.

Love to see Dempsey come into consideration, but I think that will be later in the season form permitting.

Note that this is not my best 23, it's just the team I think will run out for round 1. I personally think some guys in this side should be playing VFL, but I can't recall the last time the club made tough calls like that.

No one here names Touhy but I believe he will start in the team, like Dahlhaus and Higgins in 2022. To retain his spot, it’s up to form?
7th defender is a toss up between Bowes, Bews and O’Connor, and we don’t really know from the cheap seats. 7th forward will be between Mannah and Dempsey, assuming Rohan doesn’t get up.

FB: Kolo SDK ZGuthrie
HB: Stewart JHenry Duncan
C: Holmes Blicavs Tuohy
R: Stanley Guthrie Danger
HF: Close Cameron Miers
FF: Stengle Hawkins OHenry
Int: Bruin Atkins Mannah Bowes
Sub : O’Connor

Emg:
B: Bews Mulin O’Sullivan
Mid: Parfitt Knevitt Clark Stevens
R: Conway
F: Neal Dempsey (Rohan inj)

My comment with Neale playing R1 was if Rohan + Blitz both didn’t play.

Primarily Neale would be in to chop out in the ruck where Blitz would normally spend time.

Rohan also being out in the assumption just made Neale play make even more sense to me.

I’m far from all in on Neale… but I was just addressing a posted R1 team that didn’t have a second ruck option.

I think Neale rucking over Conway… especially with Rohan out made sense.

In the end if he performs really well in the practice matches and Rohan + Blitz are out I think he’d be stiff not to be named.

Unless we are happy ruck SDK (which I really hope we don’t).

If Blitz doesn’t play… who is second ruck?

Someone will need to fill that void.
You are definitely onto something. Everything I hear is that Neale has taken a massive step and is frankly playing better than Hawkins in the pre season. Now that doesnt mean much (in terms of who is a lock for Round 1) but they are really thinking how they find meaningful games for him.

My understanding is that it is between him and Dempsey for that “7th” forward spot in best 23. That is like an apple and orange so I don’t know how they make that call. But we will see them both next Thursday against Carlton given they add extras to the AFL game and will have 8 forwards.

Going to be interesting

So I am going to go off piste a little and take this from Round 1 to First Practise game against Carlton.

My understanding is that they are going to have 6 on the bench and maybe even up to 8 (2 of whom might play a little in the AFL game and then back up for a half in the VFL). But as a standard team we need to pick 24 for next week. 8 from each line. Below I give my team for next Thursday

Backs: Stewart, SDK, Duncan, Kolo, Henry, Zuthrie, 2E, Holmes (yes I think they are going to continue the experiment)
Mids: Stanley, Danger, Guthrie, Bruhn, Blitz, MOC (wing), Bowes, Parfitt
Forwards: Hawk, Jezza, Miers, Close, Stengle, Henry, Dempsey, Neale

If they go for 2 extra on the bench I think it will be Mullin and Conway (extra ruck).

I am very confident on the forward line - that is the 8. On the backline my only question is whether Kolo is ready. If not they add Mullin I think in the backline. And maybe then Bews gets a look in if extend to 8 on bench.

I hate not putting Knevitt (without the E) in and would love to be wrong and he replace Parfitt

COS, Clark. Mannagh despite all the hype will play in the VFL game

For Carlton this is a big practice game and I expect them to go full on. They have their offical game Wednesday after but I suspect they may rest a few ahead of round 0. So they will go hard hit out now.

I think good change Round 1 comes out of the 24/6 players I listed above.

I don't think it's a terrible point about them giving Tuohy a chance early.

My thinking is that Blicavs will be used more on the wing and Duncan to half back as the classy distributor. Maybe O'Connor back there a bit more too with C.Guthrie returning to midfield.

So it's not necessarily a slight on Tuohy. Dempsey is another whose chance in the side may be more dependent on getting wing minutes.

But your option is very plausible too.

You reckon they'll continue the Holmes experiment there? Holmes when interviewed said he was going to continue midfield this year I think. I think it might be half just setting up a structure in practice to match Collingwood's so they can train against it. Holmes isn't quite Daicos but he's the closest we got.

I am surprised at the experiment to be honest. I haven’t thought of him as that precision kicker and we already have a (fit) Duncan coming off half back and I would have thought Mullin would be developed there using his speed. We also have Bowes…And that what we lacked, if Bews was not in best 23, was a lock down defender and I didn’t see Holmes as that. And lastly Holmes wanted as you say to go more MF.

So all of that suggested to me that it was just a test for ”just in case” and we would see him back on the wing. But I have been told that his 3 cracks at it have been very impressive and they like having that speed coming out of the backline. So that has led me to think we may see the experiment continue - at least into the practice games

We like to have young players experience different positions just for their own development as much as anything. Remember Menzel at half back? SDK up forward and in the ruck?

I wouldn't be surprised to see him play a little bit back there in junk time once a game is won or lost. But I'd be surprised if it is a tactic we're seriously considering.

From "Jordan Clark doesn't defend, just runs and attacks and we can't have that in the backline" to "get Max Holmes in the backline, he won't defend but he'll run and attack"

My head is spinning

This is depressing.
If you think that's depressing then I could sirens the next 20 minutes filling up this post with some of the most depressing state-of-the-world facts going around.

Then footy only being a month away will seem like the only light at the end of the tunnel that isn't an incoming freight train.

Maybe I'll skip step 1

It seems like the vibe around the pre season has been speed and run. There are a few guys who seem to have dropped a couple of Kgs from Danger on down. So I am thinking that "the need for speed" will be prevalent in the team this season. Of course this will include speed of ball movement so accurate reliable disposal will be part of it. This probably keeps Mitch Duncan in the team. But its the slower older types like Duncan and Tuohy that I suspect will be forced out by younger legs with speed and endurance.

Lots in these parts see Bews out of the side but I cannot see anyone better to put on Charlie Cameron in the Grand Final so it will be an area to watch. O'conner, Mullin, Clohessy or even Willis or Humphries might get a chance there.

With Kolo's availability looking uncertain this week, I am looking forward to seeing someone else come in as a tall back. I am guessing we get to see Jeka who has speed and is an above average kick. I doubt anyone would put Kolo in their speed, run and accuracy group. But for now he is still best 22.

The problem last year was in the middle. Having Cam Guthrie back and a less injured Danger will help. But we need more. Improvement from Bowes, Bruhn and Holmes will help but we need new blood like Knevitt, Clark, Willis, Hardie or Humphries to come on fast. So at least until the picture becomes clearer, Knevitt and Clark are automatic selections.

Looking forward to seeing all the new guys and what the coaches are thinking on Thursday. I have given myself the day off to watch it live but only on TV unfortunately.

Footy is my distraction from that shit right now. I've never been so worried about the trajectory of the world. But I've only been a father for 3 years maybe this is just normal father anxiety. 👍
