WA team is not that great atm, I wish they did it when Franklin Kennedy Rance Fyfe where in full flight!

Trying to think of a team off the top of my head.

L Baker Barrass J Mcgovern
J Clark Taylor L Humphries
L Jackson P Cripps N Martin
S Bolton J Treacy K Pickett
Bo Hill Hogan Waterman

English Warner Kelly

Coniglio Naughton Mcgovern B Hill
You need small mid/sized defenders than can defend and starcevich is one of the best going around. Like I said Mitch Gov is surpluss

Stupid idea. It’s state of origin, not region of origin. So Victoria is strong at the moment, who cares - it goes in cycles like all things.
I agree with just having an only Victoria team, but TBH I think Victoria would have comfortably beat allcomers at any point this century. It's not really a "strong at the moment" thing.

Yep. Victoria is easily the biggest of the AFL states and the draft numbers reflect that.
And along with timing, risk of injury etc, Victoria being so strong on paper on a consistent basis is another reason why SoO hasn't been revisted for so long.

It is easier with Rugby League as both NSW and QLD are roughly the same size, so in theory the talent pool is similar enough to create a close contest. If the two main Rugby League states were NSW and Tasmania it would not work.

It was only a few years ago that all and sundry were saying WA would easily beat Vic. Things change.

Vic has always had the same advantages (population) but it hasn’t stopped other states beating them in the past.

The other advantage of this is it might snap into clear focus where development needs to be concentrated. SA is a footy mad state and always has been. In the 90s they were competitive with and defeated Victoria. If they’re getting beaten by 20 goals now, something is very wrong.

And in any case, it doesn’t have to be even. It’s not club footy with equalisation. It’s more akin to international competition. It makes the hate and the upsets between states all the better. If you are playing these games once every 3 or 4 years, it’s not like club footy where shit results every single week makes people tire of it and switch off. It’s a real, rare event.

Yes, but I don't think that Victorians really care about State of Origin all that much any more. The one place that Victorians have a genuine rivalry with - Sydney - isn't an AFL city. I suspect that Victorians don't really have a great deal of parochialism when it comes to South Australia and Western Australia.

FWIW, Victoria does have a pretty dominant winning % in historical SOO.

I also think it's not a coincidence that the heyday of WA vs Victoria SoO was the mid-80s - just before the Weagles came in.

The heyday of SA vs Victoria was, arguably, 1989-91 - basically in the lead up to the Crows.

Come 1993, State of Origin crowds had just died in the arse.

Could make for some interesting matches. I think you'd have to split Victoria into Vic Metro and Vic Country, otherwise they would be too strong and it would likely be uncompetitive. When other states get stronger, they can combine the two teams into one Vic state team again.

NSW has a stronger midfield, but QLD has stronger KP players.

Would be a great match.

Also NSW, WA, SA and QLD are all fairly evenly matched actually.

I’ve always wondered if an east vs west sort of thing would work.
WA/SA/NT + European vs Vic/NSW/Qld/Tas. There should be plenty of depth for both sides to compete against each other. Maybe there has to be at least one rep for each state or something.
Historically it certainly would have worked but looking at some of the great players that QLD and NSW are consistently producing, maybe the eastern team would be too strong.

The problem with State of Origin was it got ridiculous adding WA, Tasmania, Allies etc. AFL State of Origin is South Australia vs Victoria. The last time SA played Victoria at the old Football Park in 1997 they got a crowd of 40,595. If they played a SA vs Vic Origin match at Adelaide Oval now they'd get 52K easily.

That's a fair point about South Australia, but honestly, I think Victoria stopped giving a shit a while before that. I know that the concept of the Allies was a bit wet, but apart from the EJ Whitten lap match (and even then it was only 60k), the Vics just couldn't pull a crowd in the 90s. It's not like SA vs WA was a massive draw, either.

Honestly, I'd rather just have another week of watching Geelong.

For State of Origin to return, it really needs to be Vic, SA & WA tri-series for it to work properly and its linked with the bye weeks in pre-season, mid-season and pre-finals.

Example, SoO Series 1, 2025
Week 1, Vic vs SA, March
Week 2, SA vs WA, May
Week 3, WA vs Vic, August

Example, SoO Series 2, 2027
Week 1, WA vs SA, March
Week 2, Vic vs WA, May
Week 3, SA vs Vic, August

Qld/NT, NSW/ACT & Tas could have their own series in parallel.

I don't think any serious contender would want their star players playing the week before finals, especially not with concussion protocols ruling players out for two weeks.

Therein lies the problem. The clubs HATES the SoS concept whenever its played for that reason. That why the AFL has to tell them what to do and not ask them.

Allies and All-Stars were hated by the affected states. No conglomeration thing is going to work.
I doubt clubs would allow anything to work, and the fan base that loved Origin is on the way out without there seeming to be even theoretical interest from millenials and younger.

I would love it to return, with real states and territories (OK, not ACT) but clubs won't allow it, and it would likely flop like the pre-season cup did. Once the clubs and players have no buy-in, its over. Even if the fans once did buy in they won't any more.
