Is it just me or do both boys look way bigger in the pipes especially. Jesus, look out AFL if Nick develops a “Dont argue”. Unstoppable

Yeah I reckon they have. I’ve noticed a big difference in Dean, Daics, Ryan, AJ, Reef, HH, Alan, and IQ. I’m sure there’s others I can’t think of.

I reckon Nick spent a bit of time in the gym when he injured his knee. He seemed to shrug and body opponents with ease in the finals series.

Lookout if Nick adds the fend off to his repertoire.

He's already got a lot of strength through the hips & core.

Ash Johnson has bulked up more than everyone else you mentioned, if his care factor increases by similar amount he'll be a ****en weapon.

In general, I feel the need to defend the lingering imputation that AJ doesn't care enough (Im not saying thats necessarily what you are implying - you do sound supportive of him). Overall I don't believe it is fair and I believe it is unfounded on the evidence.

I understand he can move in a lackadaisical manner, and can appear to lack intensity and repeat efforts at times.
I think that perhaps has more to do with:
(1) fitness (he has had a totally different pathway to playing AFL), and
(2) the roles he has been asked to play (key forwards always go missing when the defence is under pressure, playing off the back foot, generating little run and bombing out. This is especially the case for those forwards that aren't strong hulks. AJ is probably a 3rd tall to be fair, and has barely had the opportunity to play that role. )

While there are examples where he has dropped his head or lost concentration, I don't believe it is more than most of our other players. I have a lot of faith in him and dont think he has done anything to warrant criticism from fans. Our patience will be rewarded.

The one area I would like Ash to improve in is to be prepared to do the harder work. He loves leading into space and he likes to fly from behind a pack but he doesn’t seem to like to play in front when the odds are against him. By this I mean just absorb the impact of a defender or a whole pack and bring the ball to ground. This is the area that Brodie and Dan McStay are prepared to bring to the team and the area I think AJ can improve the most.

I don’t think it’s fair to say Ash doesn’t play from in front because he doesn’t work hard. He simply doesn’t have the strength of Mihocek or McStay to play that way. It’s looking like that might develop this year.

Steene has built up a bit too.
Every club is improving in this way…the best thing about being reigning premiers is that 20 of other guys missed out…they will be hungry. They will drive the others.

No hangover to speak of here, go pies!

AJ is close, but he needs to either get better at playing tall or playing small. Does brilliant things, but doesn't provide a good enough contest either in the air or at ground level. Needs to add consistent competitiveness in either area and he'll be an AFL lock.

This is the problem, I don’t think he’ll ever be a contested player. I don’t think he is suited as a target either. Not everyone is and that is fine…I think he will come in at times during the season but structurally I think I we need someone like Krueger.

And, as Kreugs could injure himself walking to the team meeting, we may not have a single solution.

Fly will make it work with a makeshift forward line. Don’t forget Cox and Cameron are also handy up forward and will at least ease the burden on Mihocek. Eyre could be an option if he can also stay fit…

We'll rotate players through that forward line to fill the hole without mcstay. They have time to work it out.
The next part of pre-season will be telling.

Yeah, I'm not overly concerned. Just mean they'll almost certainly need to use different set ups throughout the year.

Exactly.
There's the obvious options, with Kreugs the closest like-for-like; but, if there's a time to have the problem, it's definitely this far out from the games, so they can work through their plans A, B & C.

Which is frustrating because at full tilt he’s got beautiful side hands when he marks. Awesome, fluent set shot kick too. Perfect lead up target

Kreuger is the most like for like, if he could stay on the park.
But we should see multiple players get opportunity for that role through the year.

I agree, I reckon all three of Johnson, Kreugs and Reef will get their crack at it in the role at some stage.

We’ll rotate as necessary through the first of the year (and the pre season) and hopefully someone will have staked their claim to it by the time we get close to the pointy end of the year.

Was Krueger in full training pre-Christmas?
He was. He did have a session with just running but otherwise he has been doing everything

Different setups makes us more unpredictable. Tougher to defend for certain
