Big difference between nominating a player and taking them. Collingwood did the same, did they not, with McGuane? That’s the system
No Collingwood had the balls to tell McGuane they wouldn't instead of leading him on the whole draft.
I wouldn't have had an issue if we were just upfront in the beginning and tell him no sorry there isn't a spot for you.
It looks terrible and some of us supporters have a right to question the clubs thinking.

Didn't they nominate him as a rookie?

Even Thursday night they publicly said they were picking between him and an NGA kid on Friday and they didnt take McGuane.

Not sure where your getting your info from mate but pretty sure there was even an article on it and McGuane senior accepted it but mentioned how heart broken and upset his boy was when the call came through.

How do you know we didn’t communicate with him? Richmond from what i believe they remained in regular contact.

Next week I'll be chatting with Rhy Gieschen and this is your chance to submit any of your draft related questions that I can throw into the mix.

Please submit any questions via the Google form below over the next 2 days!

can’t help but feel the rookie draft system is a joke when we have Sydney re rookieing Dane Rampe and Jake Lloyd
Now that is something that is broken when it comes to the AFL. Allowing 270 game veterans to be placed on a rookie list kind of defeats the purpose of calling it a rookie draft.

For mine the rookie draft should be limited to players who have never been on an AFL list or have at most 3 years experience, so a situation where a kid may have had injury issues that have derailed their first chance at it and they are being given a 2nd chance.

If that means that older guys on club lists are prematurely retired because clubs need to make tough list choices then so be it.

We nominated him, clearly there was the intention to draft him. I don’t care if the kid plays at Richmond now, but I’ll call out a potato when I see one.
Retschko hasn't even played a game for us and you're labelling him a potato. Clearly our recruitment team rates him higher than Kellaway given all the time they have spent scouting both players over the last few years. On what basis are you rating Kellaway higher than Retschko or Peucker or NRT who we also took ahead of Kellaway?

Wonder if we were never going to take Louis, even with 20 picks, but we nominated him to try and trick another club to bid on him in the "free" range, so he gets on a list.
By nominating Kellaway we allow other clubs to set the price for the kid and then we get to decide if it is a price that we are happy to pay to keep him or not.

Neither do I and I'm not doing a google search for anything Collingwood related in case of virus 😬

In regards to the rookie pick being between him & Saxena that was an O'Brien's quote on zero hangar from Thursday night that they'll decide between the 2.

Perhaps we nominated Kellaway and didn't draft him because we wanted 4 players, and got 4 players we rated above Kellaway in the draft. We were likely open to drafting Kellaway if only 3 or less players we rated above him were available to us in the draft.

No team goes into the draft with a certain idea of what players will be available to them with later picks.

retschko looked miles off it at VFL. None of the Geelong fans thought he was banging the door down and weren’t surprised when they cut him after only 1 year.

We put him on the main list but I can’t see that anyone one would have taken before the rookie draft.

Just yet another manipulated system that we’re supposed to just smile and nod at.

It really is an amateur league administration wise, they get so much wrong and it’s all money driven now
This 👆
Couldn’t agree more. The comp is now scripted crap. All can see what the AFL is doing with GC after they got GWS to a GF. It’s the most contrived rubbish including the changing of rules to make every game look a certain way for the Corperate $.
We all eat this shit up continually because we love the club. Will always support and hope the tigs can beat the system but it’s beyond a joke now.

If he was on our list last year he would've played at least 10 games.

A first year player averaging 22 disposals and nearly a goal a game off a wing. We would've been frothing over his performances.

Miles off on Geelongs' list, sure.

We wanted him last year but didn't have the spot to bring him in, so when the opportunity presented to get him this time we did and it basically was Retschko for Dow as far as list changes go in a move which better balances our list alongside the other players we brought in this year.

I can guarantee that if Louis wasn't a Kellaway that not a single poster on here would have been calling for him to be drafted to Richmond.

Nothing wrong with the club nominating Kellaway and hedging our bets either way.
I’m sure the club would’ve been very open about it prior.

I’m still surprised he wasn’t rookied and I do feel like he could be a great role player who consistently can put in a solid shift for the betterment of the side.

It’s on his genes, the Kellaway’s never took the easy path, I’m sure he’ll scrap his way onto our list in the next 36 months and be highly motivated once we give him the chance.
