What I find is there are people patting the club on the back for valuing a lost spot ignoring that we were reckless with a spot during trade week.

Retschko should be competing for a rookie spot not on the primary list.
Has anyone considered that we jumped in to avoid being beaten to it by another club.

I found it interesting hearing the bombers list manager talk about Robey after Wednesday night. Clearly seen as a forward. Said he may be able to play midfield down the track.

I know the club was clear about best available with early picks, but viewing him as far more of a forward, in light of our draft haul last year, he doesn’t really make sense for our list. He’s probably a bigger, more forward, less classy version of Lalor. I think he ends up a fine player, but somewhere in the vicinity of a Logan Morris/Josh Caddy style player as opposed to the second coming of Dusty/Bont.
Our club thought the same as Rosas on Robey.
Saw Cumming and Grjl as future mids.
X Taylor a defender not a future mid.

Will be interesting to see how Grjl progresses. He will at least be a dynamic half back. I think he could be a great wingman but if he has the talent the club thinks he does then he could crack it as an elite mid in time. If the latter we will have absolutely cleaned up. But time will tell if he gets there.
Cumming is more obvious the talent he has and his ability to make it as a mid.

I’m surprised more state league or delisted players didn’t get picked TBH.
The quality of players picked after the first round dropped dramatically. Definitely beauty in the eye of the beholder after that and many of these were lucky to be placed on senior lists compared to last year.

Grill talent is obvious might take 12m longer for his body to fill out , I wouldn’t underestimate him as he stepped up to VFL with ease

If he ends up being a Daniel Rioli type HBF then im taking that
If he ends up like Butters then i am ecstatic and will love him for the rest of his career

Im sure he will be a good to very good 200 game player

I don’t mind the type of player. I think we’ve had better performed players on our own vfl program that we’ve done nothing to get.

Yeah more revisionist history.

retschko was not suggest by anyone here as a option when the cats DELISTED him.

Yes, thats right. When we traded for him, the cats had already told him he was going to be delisted. Not many here like to recall that when evaluating him.

So he is hardly a steal. He was not wanted by the Club widely regarded to be the most professionally ran & successful club in the country. Cats don't have too many "misses" in their history over the past couple of decades, so i reckon if they were happy to move on from him, then thats worth something.

He might turn into a serviceable player, but acting like retschko is "more than a VFL player" - another pisstake from the same nipple-suckers

I’m confident he can at least be an elite winger. But the club thinks he will be a Butters type mid in time (at least in style if not quality).

But who knows.
I think he’s a bankable 200 gamer.
Time will tell whether that is as a role player, vital cog or game breaker.

I hope but Butters has traits at even in the juniors where he had that campaigner in him that makes him the player he is and is extremely tough for a 180cm 70kg kid/player.
His tackling , Hits , aggression was always there and i dont see that with Grlj . you either have that or dont i suppose and cant manufacture that instinct.
Richards doesnt but still a bloody great mid now but took him 6-7 years to get to that
I would be happy with a player like Richards but he is 5 cm taller and bigger body so who knows

Don’t agree with you regarding Grlj not have the necessary mongrel in him. He’s pretty aggressive most of the time, doesn’t take a backward step. I have big hopes for him that he can turn into that hard nosed pacey midfielder.

I’d like to see him get through a fortnight training to validate that flippant remark . Fair point
I’ve seen a lot of comments in here regarding Smilies ability and running capacity over others. What did I miss last season? I’m barracking for this kid as we need him being the worst midfield in the comp! I just don’t get the confidence

Yep, and I thought Butters in his junior years was more attacking as a fwd/mid compared to Grjl who starts as a def/mid.

Grjl looks quicker to the eye.

Butters more attacking with his disposal, off the 45 or inside 50.

More contested too. That may be the difference as to whether Grjl ends up a winger or a true inside/outside mid.

Yes, but surely Grlj will mature and develop the body to play that midfield role. Admittedly, I’ve only seen highlights of him but he’s a playmaker with his speed and sidestep ability, and he’s pretty damn hard at the contest. And he’s been attacking with play switches through the corridor.
He’s every chance to be a Butters type imo.

It’s probably his power and skill combo that sets him apart. There were moments in the VFL you could see he will become extremely difficult to stop in the middle. Add in his skill and it’s very promising… if he can get his body right and gain match fitness.

Vasiliy Lomachenko, one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world, did ballet for 4 years as it taught him footwork and balance. Not a terrible skillset to have. Not sure if tap does the same thing, but it could be a positive.
His brother did a different type of tap dance.

We all see things differently but i have not seen Grlj just go to 'Smash' the man or do things to unsettle the opposition
he is more a ball player rather than the player that will make the opposition feel the hit.
Butters was doing that as a junior

I recall people laughing at us when, in 17, the players were sent to do ballet, but it worked out okay for us.

Butters has not won a premiership, do not care much for Butters.

Some will say it is a team game, True, but where is the real impact??

I think Butters is one of the most overrated players in the game. To win premierships you cannot have overrated players
