And why didn’t we try to trade up before pick 50?
Gonna be random for me to say this....

I sort of half expected crows to use that pick to get a mature aged 21 or 22 or 23 year old mid in the SANFL from either Norwood, Glenelg or Sturt.

Andy Anderson from Sturt got picked up by Collingwood

We made our serious play for Dyson Sharp but unfortunately Essendon wanted him badly as well, obviously Hamish and his crew didn't rate any mids left in the draft or any mature age State League level mids high enough to take a main list/rookie spot. Since the draft Southport mid Zac Foot has joined us over summer as a train on,with speed being the obvious reason we're looking at him.

There is no chance a state league mature age player would get a game in our side

And I don't mean that from a "our side is amazing" standpoint, just we would never select a player like that

I do chat to a lot of crows fans on here and in my regular drinking pubs.

One of my crows mates claimed that one SA mid from my SANFL club , which is South Adelaide Panthers, is apparently tipped to go top 10 in the 2026 draft.

Crows main concern is a prime age 23 to 28 year old inside mid with pace.

Just off the top of my head Ben Hudson and Kyle Hartigan played more than the odd game

True, though I was thinking outside of key position players and rucks

With our list profile we're much more likely to use our high draft picks in the middle/flanks than a state league pick up

I think Sam Melengola, James Podsiadly and Tom Stewart all share a mature age afl entry story for the Cats. Stewart became a unicorn selection but even the other two served a purpose.

League wide, there must be many mature age success stories. Marlin Pickett springs to mind.

Why not us? It's a fair enough question for list management.

Is that Port Academy tied Zemes Pilot?

Yes he is tipped as a top 10 prospect

I think it works in a side like Geelong because the majority of their draft picks are later selections. The difference between an U18 late pick and a mature ager from state leagues is small, and if anything the mature ager is more of a known quantity

With our side, we have a lot more high end draft pick talent. If we wanted to play a "mature age" type that is state league quality, we'd just bring in Chayce Jones or Lachie Sholl (or previously Lachlan Murphy)

Fair enough opinion. Feasible.

What I'm getting at is Rankine and Tom Mcguane 20m sprint test are basically the same.

2.93

Mitch Stevens is even quicker at 2.88.

Watching McGuane and Stevens play, I don't think you'd say speed are their weapons.

Rankine's is clearly.

So I don't think it's all in your 20m test result.

There's a way in which you apply your speed which makes it a weapon and is not just about straight line speed.

The 20m test shows how fast you are from standing still to running 20m in a straight line after a gun goes off. It does not measure how fast you are around and with a football. There’s a few more factors involved than just waiting to hear the gun and charging off in a straight line.

I'm surprised that if we're inviting McGuane why we also didn't invite Mitch Stevens. He also had some AFL attributes, he also isn't tiny.
Can he be F/S next year if he wasn't nommed this year, and goes into the draft again?
