Grjl is a hard one to peg for mine. Has all the tools, has a wicked sidestep and his overlap running is great to watch. In highlights, he swoops on the loose ball at pace and one grabs it a lot which is another big tick. He’s hard as a cats head and not afraid to go when needed.

Only question mark is how classy is he? At the championships he was underwhelming for mine, one game he only had 2 kicks - recruiters like to see the very top echelon rise to the Occassion at every level which he didn’t do.

I’m on the fence bc he shows glimpses but I’m not sure it will translate.

At the end of the day I’ll be happy with 2 of Robey, Sharp, Cumming, CDT and Grjl
I will take what I see from Sharp and Cumings over speculation on Grjl anyday.

the point is we get Sharp and Cumings and who is to say someone does not come along in future years we do not need to speculate?

can't win premierships now but can lose them why lose on speculation now?

Doesnt matter which way the game goes having a player Like Libbs , Dunkley , Neal etc that get the ball 30+ times a game and can run defensively to help and maintain defensive pressure will always be a part of the game specially now with 5 interchange. Then you add the foward ability of Sharp who can rest there and kick a goal then that is the meat & patato of the meal.

Worpel was a free agent and Hawks had dreams of Merrett which backfired and would have been reluctant to commit
Oliver as you mentioned has issue's which are very well known
Steel got traded by stkilda but quickly got snapped up and would have had 5-6 other clubs lining up if he was open to a move prior but happened on the last day. StKilda who knows what they are doing

Whilst the main knock on Sharp is his speed i would highly doubt he is slower than Harvey Langford or even that much slower than a Jagga smith/Smillie type but is a beast of a mid that actually runs all day both offensively and defensively
SA didnt play him full time mid this year and gave other kids a run in the midfield as well as senior games.
but i think if he did play in his best position all year then he would have been inside the to 4 on everybody's board
Sharp looks quicker than Langford for me especially over ten metres which is what counts

Sharp looks like he can pump his shorter legs into motion quicker at the start for starters on top of his mind speed and aggression

to the eye Sharp does not look slow for mine over ten at least

I've watched a few sharp games and highlights of rowell in his draft yr. What i noticed is rowell could get separation from the contest then create a bit more of a gap over 10-20m, sharp in the sanfl could get the separation over the first 5-10m however couldn't create more of the gap post 10m. If you are setting Sharp up as the inside mid to create just that bit of separation to then get it out to the first receiver he will excel.

Dream on, zero chance we get Bailey or Wilmott
Those players were just examples … the point was a draft decision may seem ‘weird’ … but then make more sense later. Like bypassing Hobbs and other ‘big bodied’ mids, much to the annoyance of BF … then bringing in TT a year later (Id say TT was a lock to come to us a long way out … Hopper less so).

Spoke to a good friend of Patrick Retschko (spelling?) dad who said he was rapt to get to Richmond and had already had dinner with Yze and was super impressed. Never had dinner with Chris Scott. Also mentioned that the AFL definitely has a drug culture issue and while not naming a club in particular, did say that one club had gone from 2 self reports/strikes in one year, to 11 the next, to 23 the following...
Melbourne club or one near norlane??

Miller in 3 years time will be nearing the end and that’s even if he’s still at Richmond. He’s a free agent once his contract runs out. We’ll need another KPD.

I’m not advocating that we draft Dean and I would rather X Taylor but my point is that I’d be okay if we did draft Dean. Taylor has a similar style to Grimes. Not quite as quick but slightly more attacking.
I’m not sure why everyone seems to think a players career is nearing the end at 30yo?!??

Of course every player is different, but majority of regular senior players play well beyond 32yo.

If Matty Clarke & Eagles are not in love with either Robey or CDT and Bombers really want 1 of them this is the perfect trade to happen or if the Eagles really do want Dean then this deal wont achieve that goal as carlton will just match a bid at pick #5 with their pick #9

Really depends what they want and if its Sharp they run the risk of Richmond taking him or trading that pick to a club that does love Sharp and with Petracca / Oliver out i could see melbourne moving up to pick #4 to grab Sharp
Eagles have traded out of the top-3 of the draft two years out of the last three, I just can’t see them doing it again. They’d be very brave if they did given it’s a ‘weak’ draft.

Maybe you and I have differing ideas on what a midfielder is. For me it's not just CBA's, it's being involved around stoppages and that's where I see Lalor and Hotton excelling, they'll both be attending CBA's, along with Smillie, McAulliffe and Kellaway, but they'll be involved in most, if not all forward half stoppages. If Robey comes in then he also assists around those stoppages.

What I can see is Smillie, Kellaway and Grijl (if drafted) being involved but more in the defensive half stoppages.

FWIW, Blair has stated on a number of occasions that the recruitment team try to forecast what the game will look like in 5 years time. From what I can see (as a nuffie) the game is moving away from those pure inside mids, Steele went for peanuts, as did Worpel, OLiver has issues but he also went cheaply and we've already seen a number of young, pure mids get delisted. The game has evolved away from the Mitchell and Crouch types.

Just my opinion, but I don't want Sharp
Mitchell, Crouch, Oliver are simply not able to defend well enough.

Whereas Dunkley just won a B&F in a premiership year because he defends like his life depends on it.

Hopper doesn’t defend like his life depends on it. TT is desperate and an excellent tackler, but doesn’t seem to run defensively all that well. Prestia used to be a good transition mid but those days are gone.

There’ll always be a place for elite inside mids (Tom Green, Bont, Serong) irrespective of defensive qualities. And there’ll be a place for inside mids who are elite in defence (Dunkley, Libba, Rowbottom) … but I agree the Hopper, Worpel, Oliver, Steele types are a dying breed … you wouldn’t want more than one as part of your midfield mix.

I think you are ‘mis-remembering’ ….

Jack R played 22 games and kicked 51 goals as a 33yo in 2021.

Dusty came 2nd in the B&F and made the AA squad in 2023 as a 32yo, getting 50 odd coaches votes and averaged 23 touches and 1.1 goals per game.

Cotch averaged 22 disposals, from 19 games in 2022 as a 32yo. His 5 clearances and 5.2 SI’s that season were both his highest since 2018.

So which players were ‘cooked’ by 30yo? It’s very rare.

Clearly said in jest

They wont really care and will do what netts them the player they want and IMO that is Sharp
If they can get a trade done that allows them to get sharp plus an extra asset, then they will do it
I just cant believe they go for CDT he is not natanui and they would be better getting a Ruck as a free agent

Sharp getting the ball out to Reid , Duursma & Hewett would be the perfect fit

Point is

Rance retired at 30

Cameron is as old as lynch and he kicked 90 goals this year

Danger was taken in the same draft as Cotchin

Pendles is 38

There are levels to these things

Our players relatively speaking hit the wall early

Against Pendles, Danger and Jezza maybe so… against Natanui, Judd and Fyfe not so much.

When our dynasty team produces 4 x 300+ gamers (and in Vlastuin a likely 5th), and there has only been 110 x 300-gamers in history… then just not sure what ‘level’ people seem to think our players hit the wall at.

For the Grlj lovers

Oakleigh Chargers star Sam Grlj has Blues blood running through his veins.

“Dad supported Carlton and his dad supported them, so it just got passed down,” Grlj tells foxfooty.com.au.

“I remember coming here (the MCG) and watching Sam Docherty’s kick through the middle and his kick to Blake Acres for that (final in 2023). That was pretty special.”

Carlton holds Picks 9 and 11, but those selections will change depending on when a Harry Dean father-son bid comes. Plus Grlj has lots of top-10 interest, starting at Richmond (Picks 3 and 4).

Like most footy-mad families, the parents of this year’s top draft prospects have had a significant influence on which AFL team they support.
