Sharp has been the best junior footballer for the last 2 years in his age bracket see his champs. His added more strings to his game this year also. He has class and hurt factor. At 3 and 4 you take the best available players no brainer.
Jack Graham won the Larke medal and slid to 53.

Has there been any explanation as why Grjl performance seemed so abysmal?
He did reference in an interview something to the effect of he got a little bit in his own head. Admitted he was off his game due to overthinking his role, but went back to CTL and played with more natural instinct and finished the season well. You’ll be able to find the interview out there somewhere, but something to that effect.

He’s been good good for 2 years, no doubt, but you’ve got to consider players ceilings when ranking them.
I mean if you’re ranking players purely on output then WC take him.

That doesnt sound like a player we should be considering at pick #4

Full season highlights for the standout inside mid in this draft pool Dyson Sharp. Dyson is not the type of footballer who's going to wow the crowd with spectacular, highlight worthy plays... his bread and butter is his work around congestion and contest. Clean hands, powerful over the ball, quick and slick disposal, and always a ferocious appetite to pressure and tackle. Sharp is the player most ready to step straight in to an AFL midfield in round 1 next season and meaningfully contribute, and shapes as a likely future leader for whichever team picks him.

Can’t tell me how this is not impressive. He is a pure midfielder, that is good overhead, does the things teams love & kicks goals.

Skills pretty good by foot and some footage there of speed out of a contest.

Bonus points that he’s played seniors and has a good 1-2 with Louis.

Sharp at the bottom of the pack feeding Hotton, Smillie and Lalor for the next 15yrs.

Daffy, Leys etc all different types coming through next few years.

Wouldn’t be upset if we call his name 1st or 2nd.

With taking Grlj & Taylor means we dont add to our midfield (some would say grlj will be a mid of sorts but he is not that at the moment)

LeRay also falls into a similar basket in he 'May' become a mid in the future
But Fred gives you that instant Prestia replacement that Sonsie & Dow have failed to do

I just feel we will need to add a true mid if we dont take 1 at 3 or 4
Last year I had Fred as one to keep an eye on for this year, but the thing about this year is he just looked slow.
I agree with the quicker Grjl & Taylor types but the last thing we need is a slow small plodder in the midfield.
And as slow as Prestia has become I reckon he'd still beat Fred over 20m right now.

I really dont see the comparison of Fred to the Meatball, Prestia was very fit & explosive junior, hence the nickname.

20 mtr 3.17 and 2klm 6.33 is not really that slow
Jagga & Smillie 3.10 and i think langford was something like 3.27

But he has a nice step and both sided which always adds to inside mids

Speed ❌
Kicking ❌
Position variability ❌

Also, its highlights. Ive seen plenty of videos where he handballs in more in hope than to an actual target (although still much better than NHH, who people seem to love)

My 2 cents worth is just from going off the tape. Too often I saw opponents running past Fred to get to repeat contests while he just jogged.

That is Grjl to a T! The amount of times I see him jump into a contest then pop a handball 5m in the air straight up.

The thing is though, we don’t need sharp to be that quick mid. For the role I envisage him to play, it’s not needed. Aslong as we compliment his type which I’d assume we would.

I can see him resting forward also, leads well and has great mark.

Think Robey is the better forward but Sharp is the better mid. Wouldn’t be unhappy with either but think as mentioned Sharp has been forgotten about once’s games stopped.

Sorry bro but I couldn't disagree more with all of your points.

The club have straight up said theyre drafting for the next premiership team, not immediate success, so saying "I'm drafting for next year, not 5 years time" directly contradicts that. We'll start rising slowly in 2027 and be finals contenders in 2028 imo.

As for inside mids being hard to find, you couldn't have paid me to take Worpel at Richmond. Oliver and Steele got traded for a packet of chips. Hobbs delisted. Kennedy and Macrae moved on last year to new clubs for cheap. They are really not that hard to find. Its ones that have an extra string to their bow that are hard to find. Not sure if Sharp has that (outside of leadership)
Drafting every year is building a Premiership side, you add the pieces. When you draft 9 players in two years under pick 30, 4 in the top 6 you are fast tracking your rebuild.

Drafting for next year does not mean you don't have a 5 year or longer plan. The reason I want one player over another is that I feel we have more need for a particular type of player, in this case mainly mids with speed.

These players will directly affect our performance over the next year or so. I don't expect us to make finals this year, but I do expect us to rise quicker than most think, due mainly to the fact that our older players are not that old or not showing real decline. Adding young guns to this mix and anything could happen.

Injuries have ruined our last 2 seasons, we are due some luck.

As far as adding inside mids, no I do not want any of those mentioned either. But sometimes good players come out of contract or want to go home. A player like Butters is mentioned. We lost Bolton. They come up every year.

That doesnt sound like a player we should be considering at pick #4

It feels like one of those drafts. If the assignment was “pick me the one guy who definitely makes it” you take sharp. Otherwise I reckon it’s one of those drafts where 75% of the first round picks are out of the AFL system within 5 years!

Never mentioned finals, I said moving up the ladder/improving. No club in their right mind would not be starting next season thinking otherwise. We have added a crop of young kids all drafted under 30 and will add two more this year. The club as long as I have followed it has never seen anything like that, so why put a 'normal' ceiling on it.
There is no ceiling and we'll try and win as many games as possible next season however it doesn't matter if we win 3 games or 6. Those extra 3 wins next year dont change, help or hinder what we are doing in 2030 onwards.

Dyson Sharp is criminally underrated. He’s the best junior player in the country. Full stop.
We're usually on a similar page, Bob. And there's no doubt he's the best-performed kid in the draft. But for me he doesn't project as the best senior player. Plus we have Lalor, Smillie and McAuliffe, so he's not a need either.

The 2 players with the most chance of making 200+ game players inside the top 5 open draft are
Sharp & Cummings and for the life of me cannot see why we would over look them and considering Kellaway is on the cards later in the draft then the Trifecta of the 3 x SA boys just makes so much sense

His kicking speed and position are not really a problem
* Speed looks fine without being elite but i wouldnt knock back Bont , Dunkley , Libba , Neal , Brayshaw , Cripps because of their speed

* Kicking as seen in his clip his kicking just about every time either hits his target or advantages his team mate
Penetration wouldnt be the best but still capable of kicking a goal from 50mtrs out

*Position , He has rested foward and played foward as well as HB at times but is just so dominant in the midfield that its way too hard to keep him out similar to the players mentioned above

2030 seems a long way away. Winning 3-6 games would be scraping the bottom, 1 better than last year would destroy moral and show almost no progress. I think we are better than that.

Correct

Our recruiters will be looking at our teams make up in the midfield 2029 and beyond
Hopper 33 and finished
Taranto 32 and finishing up
Prestia already gone
Sonsie , Dow , Green good chance of not being on the list

With the current batch of mids on the list
Lalor , Hotton , Smillie , McAuliffe , Campbell just 5 mids all with speed (smillie exception)
Sharp just fits right in there along with Cummings more than any other 2 players rated in the top 10 of this years draft
