I wouldn't have thought so either. They might value CDT and Sharp in a similar range. Sharp is probably more of a need for them.

Walking out of this draft with one of CDT or Robey is great for us.

I still think for WCE this draft is the most important draft they are going to have. If they pick wrong the players in can see it putting them back close to another decade.
If they take Dursma and CDT both players have high reward but a rather high level of risk, im not sold CDT will have enough impact the first couple yrs and Dursma will likely take 2-3 seasons before he has good impact. I can't see how they can be competitive enough under this scenario to keep Harley Reid in 3yrs time and if that's the case I could see Dursma leaving soon after (his contract will be up the same time). For that reason I think WCE have to go Sharp with pick 2 no matter what, that should atleast help in the short term with onfield performance. The more i thing about it I'd seriously consider 5 6 for pick 1 and take Sharp at 2 if I was them. Gives them sharp then atleast 2 of CDT Robey Cumming Grlj Taylor and then there teens pick to help build out other positions. I dont think they have the guts to do it as such this is probably convoluted way of saying i think Sharp and Dursma will probably be off the board. Which will leave CDT Robey as options at 3 4 for us.

I think West Coast are thinking longer term


they should pick Duursma and Robey and down the track all, including Reid all could and probably will go back to Victoria. This is okay, they are building on the run getting other quality locals etc...

the idea is when this trio eventually head back WC will be less likely to lose full value and in the meantime they are building as suited anyway so others will want to come to WA so it will all work out in a roundabout way for them.

the go home factor is nothing to fear for West Coast. look at Judd. What they would fear is getting screwed over like with Dangerfield. Plenty of Melbourne clubs, less likely to be screwed over and can time when they want WA stars to head back home along with WA guns in the draft

even with Duursma, Robey and Reid next year they will be towards the bottom, meanwhile the fans have something to look at

the other thing they would fear is CDT does not work out for them, which is possible.



Reid is happy with near term support and if he departs more likely to be closer to West Coasts terms.

Here is a suggestion that might play out over time. players currently have 8 years before RFA and ten years UFA to protect clubs. What might happen is AFL HQ might bring in a rule for clubs to have the option to opt into FA beforehand. So say for example Reid current contract another three years to 2028. Now in this scenario if West Coast are not getting a trade that suits them for Harley Reid to go back to Victoria or wherever else to another club, West Coast could pull the trigger on FA. So for example West Coast is on the bottom end of 2028, if West Coast where getting screwed over on a trade West Coast could pull the trigger on FA so if big money goes to Harley West Coast get first round compo so minimum pick 2 in the 2028 draft behind their pick one letting Harley go if it suited West Coast and Harley
Some might say the big clubs will dominate as weaker clubs just get FA and bigger clubs do not have the picks cough up big money. Maybe but other clubs can cough up big money like the Saints. The thing is Harley would be younger so he might not go to a club just in contention but a club not far off trajecting to go into contention based on list profile but still can cough ups big money. Under this scenario guns might want to go to West Coast early through the draft because West Coast pull the trigger on FA for them early getting better picks and guy like Harley becoming FA early gives him more flexibility to get bigger contract payouts earlier with more clubs chasing them and they also have better opportunity to go to their club of destination they want

So many astute talent scouts managing to nail afl players in one of the deepest drafts ever with bombers getting Clark at 39, swans bice at 41, saints boxshall at 45 etc…. It’s almost like you couldn’t have chosen wrong

The "we should have taken Murphy Reid" argument has a lot of Harry Hindsight about it.
There's also every chance he wouldn't have looked as good as he did for Freo as he would for us considering where both teams are at in their development.
I'm happy with everyone we took before him. Plus it's ridiculous to call it after a year. No one knows what Smillie even is yet. There's every chance he or Hotton wins the rising star this year.
