The more I watch of Taylor the more I think he is similar to Grimes at the next level. I see him buying into the competitive side and becoming a lockdown defender on talls and smalls opposed to becoming an attacking option. I think his disposal is too suspect to become someone you trust with the ball in his hands on a regular basis.

I saw a bloke that competes hard, breaks lines and can get a spoil in but isnt a good user and isnt a strong mark. for a top 5 third tall defender id want him to be elite. like others have said he looks more like a late first/early second rounder in most drafts.

controversial call maybe but i reckon cambell gray is similar and has more strings to his bow.

He reads the play so much earlier than anybody, and it’s why he had second most overall marks for the year and top 10 on average in the CTL.

It was also a poor year for KPDs, and as a result played more of a negating role than a traditional third tall at both State and CTL level. Nullified Mitch Marsh and Max King during the champs to prove it.

I think his ball use is really using it within himself as opposed to bad; but it’s clear it’s not a weapon as much as you’d like it to be.

In most drafts he probably would be a middle to late first round pick; but this draft is far from that.

Oh I fully understand about the fact that the F/S's and Academy players aren't available to us so we have to make our rankings from the players left.

Nonetheless, the simple fact of the matter is that there are, potentially, 5 kids in the country that are rated higher than the picks we hold, then take out the 2 the WCE (inc the compo pick that pushes us back) have dibs on. Effectively dropping our picks down to 7 & 8. Both Hartley and Gieschen are on record, numerous times, saying that this is a highly compromised draft. What do we all think that means? My take is that our picks are compromised, ie; not worth as much as they would be in a less compromised draft.

Take last year as an example, out of the top 10 picks only Levi Ashcroft and Lombard were unavailable, now lets take out the players that were rated around where WCE picks 1 & 2 land plus the 2 GCS players, Annabelle and Dean and see what players would have been available at picks 3 & 4. This isn't about comparing talent, it's about where picks land.

Lalor: WCE pick 1
FOS: WCE pick 2
Jagga: GCS match on Uwlands
Draper: GCS match bid on Patterson
Ashcroft: call that even with Annabelle
Langford: Blues match on Dean
Smillie: Tigers pick 3
Lombard: Tigers pick 4

Now factor in that it's a weaker draft and it's fairly obvious that our picks are compromised, players like Sharp and Cumming who'll (possibly) be available at our picks aren't the cream of the crop, they're the players that are normally around the dreaded pick 6, mids that aren't elite and have knocks on them. Our picks are right on the cusp of those types and very close to the Xavier lindsay, Tauru and Travaglia types of last year.

Not trying to catch you out here, but who are you taking with our other pick?

He is being slept on big time. Absolute gun. No issue if we call out Cumming-Sharp and leave Duursma and CDT to you guys.

Pipe dream.
Duursma and Robey would be nice :) Bummers can take hyphen. Make it happen!

Tim Taranto pick 2

From the 2022 draft

Wardlaw pick 4
Tsatas pick 5
Jhye Clark pick 8

Nearly every draft has players in the top 10 that are shit kicks and I CBF'd going further back.

What you will find is that picks 6 & 7 have the highest failure rate of all top 10 picks and that's because teams are picking the worst of the top rated mids, they have flaws that others above them don't, Sharp & Cumming sit right in the middle of pick 6 territory
Agree at 6 or 7, our picks, the mids have limitations. So what’s the answer?
Accept the limitation, knowing their strengths…Sharp…but make sure you have complimentary skills in the team???
Pick a genuine talent in different position…I’d be ok with Schubert even though not a need.
Someone with versatility you can develop further…XT maybe, been great all season, but you’d have to have confidence he’s more than a third tall back.
Risk on injury affected player…Phillipou?
Alternatively split or trade into next year?

The recruiters will have their scenarios. Given the haul last year, I’d be happy with our club taking some risks to get high upside players.

I think he’s not as quick as grimes but I also thought he was very similar
Loves to win.

The thing that made Grimes so effective was his pace and determination

Without his elite speed Grimes is not as effective as he was so im not buying shares in a slower Grimes HB'f

Pick 3 (or 4) along with Taylor.
I'm not on the Taylor train but if the recruiters think that he'll be pivotal in a premiership side then who am I to argue?, and I'm not on the "inside mids are a must" train either, although a bit of developing depth there wouldn't go astray.

After last years bonanza which allowed us to fill a lot of needs as well as building an elite (on potential) core of mids, combined with the reset picks in 2021 I reckon we're in a position to target needs by taking a couple of players that are the best and most talented in those positions of need. I might be shooting my load a little early here as the recruiters have said that they want to have a good look at the list this year and target players who fill the identified positions of need through trades and FA. I'm also aware of Blair's mantra of drafting for talent and trading for needs.

Positions of need:

1. Running HBF (or 2) who's competitive, has elite disposal and an excellent defensive game.

Players like Rioli, Noble and Wilmot for the run, players like Zorko, Kiddy Coleman, Amon, NWM, D'Ambrosio for the disposal skills. Grijl and Lindsay?

2. Winger, as above, but combined with an attacking skillset.

Thinking Ollie Dempsey, Isaac Smith types. Best performed wingers this year would be Barker and LeRay? Maybe pick 38 for LeRay?

3. Ruck that's a threat both on the ground as an extra mid but also as a contested mark behind and forward of the ball.

Obviously Jackson and TDK types although neither are top contested marks, does CDT fit here when we also have Sims as a ruck/forward

4. A developing inside mid who compliments the existing young blokes.

Players with an "inside/outside" game and positional versatility like Dunkley, Robey fits here. An inside mid who compliments the others? Kellaway for mine, he was a linchpin in that dominant SA side. Best player available would be Sharp, very much in the mold of an Atkins/Wardlaw type IMO
