Have argued for years that the AFL should run and fund academies and players from those academies should be open to every club. It’s just a total lottery at present, with the northern clubs hoovering up most of the best talent. Has to stop, even FS should cease to exist. Some clubs have just gained totally unfair advantages from a totally unfair system.
Only problem is that the Northern academies are so good because the clubs care. If the AFL did it I reckon 99% the result would be much less talent coming through.

The bad thing was when they scrapped access for traditional area clubs. Meant no one except the northern academies were really trying.

getting games into kane should be priority number 1 imo. hes a player that if he takes off can totally reshape our midfield to look a lot more dynamic.
yes but they won’t play him. they play muppets like dow ross and hopper instead

Yep, but needs to stop getting injured and get some solid training into him. I’m sure Serpell knows what’s he is doing and they will play him for sure when they feel he’s properly conditioned and ready to go.

I’m
Along with Grlj, looking forward to seeing how Rory Wright plays at the National Championships.

Similar player to Hayden Young in my eyes (though not as good a kick) and has some nice lateral movement to get out of stoppage.

I generally take not a lot of stock in the exhibition games like the AFL Academy and U17 Futures Games; so really looking forward to the champs.
Rory Wright played a defensive role on Sam Grlj on the weekend. Both players managed to get mid 20s, which is a great sign in particular for Grlj.
Rory Wright “was typically tough at the coalface and gave plenty of defensive attention to Oakleigh speedster Sam Grlj”.

Looking at my post from earlier in this thread below is a breakdown of the next 3-4 years, but having a big focus on the 2025 draft.

Targeting a team that is competitive around 2028/9, below lists the players currently on the list:

HB: Trainor, Gibcus, xxxx
B: xxxx , Balta, Brown
C: HRS, Smillie, Banks
HF: Hotton, Faull, Campbell
F: Mansell, Armstrong, Sims
R: xxxx, xxxx, Lalor
Int: Taranto, Hopper, McAuliffe, Alger,

Looking at this the midfield still needs players, our number 1 ruckman (this could always be a traded target in future), small defenders. I’m assuming H.Reid will remain at WC until the end of 2026 and we’ll target him then. Targeting a small or attacking defender as a FA could be a good option.

2025
Draft
Willem Duursma - midfield/utility speed - I can see him being a perfect wingman as a floor, while being a Fyfe like player as a ceiling (look at Fyfe in his draft year)
Cooper Duff-Tytler - Ruck/extra mid
Fred Rodriguez - midfield outside speed and skill
Dyson Sharp - midfield grunt
Oliver Greeves - midfield
Sam Grjl - midfield/defence - speed
Josh Lindsay - midfield/defence - kicking

Louis Kellaway - FS pick midfielder (approx pick 40+)

2026
Draft
Tanner Armstrong - small forward/defender, moving into midfield in 2025 - NGA prospect (approx pick 20+)
Jack Leys - midfield/Forward - FS (approx pick 30+)
Archie Daffy - small forward (approx rookie prospect)

Trade
Harley Reid - trade 2026 F1 and 2027 F1, plus one of Miller or Blight

FA
Butters - offer a big front ended contract 6 years $7m($2m-2.5m year 1), the attraction is joining Harley, Lalor, Smillie and Hotton, in front of the Tiger army.

Looking at the above if this was to play out this way I would be willing to go for a CDT in this years draft, given 2024 and 2025 draft hand allows a couple of high risk selections. I think the FA and big trades (ala Reid) would have a good understanding of destination/intentions 12-18months out hence if we know about Reid/Butters it also gives more freedom to a CDT selection.

In saying that I have us going into the 2025 draft with either pick 1 or 2/3 (pending our 8pt matches against WC and 3 is if Allan compo comes in) and picks 5 or 6 and I’m always big on drafting best available with these premium picks. I would go with CDT for our first pick and of those listed above I’m looking at speed and foot skills and that’s where Lindsay comes into play, depending where he rates we could trade down to get more picks in 2025 or 2026. Going into 2027 we’re competitive and develop as a team but just need another year of development for our key forwards hence from 2028 onwards we’re challenging for premierships.

2028 Round 1 team:

HB: Trainor, Gibcus, T.Armstrong
B: Lindsay, Balta, Brown
C: HRS, Smillie, Campbell
HF: Hotton, Faull, Lalor
F: Mansell, H.Armstrong, Sims
R: CDT, Butters, Reid
Int: Taranto, Banks, Leys, Alger,

Depth - Hopper, Rioli, Clarke, Green, Kellaway, Daffy, Leys 2, 2027 drafts

I love it but personally would have Clarke in my best 22. Has the skills to be better than Mansell/campbell etc. just needs to stay healthy. I personally think Harley goes to Essendon or stays. Butters would be a big get but he’s also young enough he may stay in SA. Having JHF along side you is good.
Duursma I believe could be Fyfe or Day. Depends how he develops this year.

Sharp been dropped back to the 18's this week.

Good to see how he goes against kids his own age. Him and Dougie in the same 18's team will be pretty unfair lol

That's good to make a better assessment of his play. Should play more midfield too.

He will probably have 40 and it will tell us nothing other than he's too big and strong in that dogshit comp :tearsofjoy:

This was pretty close to coming true. Played 3 quarters and had 27 off a 4 day break lol.

Cochrane had 18 & 2

In the other game Leys had 9 & 1, has started the tank 😁

He's been held back in seniors, coaches didn't want him to make the grown ups look bad

We took Lalor instead.

can have them all.

Okay so Sharp is in my top 5 now after reading that he’s going to destroy nationals. I firmly believe this kid is a gun. But the SANFL are holding him back.

SANFL & WAFL seem pretty shit for development.

How often do one of their players come storming into top pick contention during the year. They're either usually already there and stay or they slide.

CTL & Northern Academies are focused purely on development where as WAFL and SANFL have clubs trying to win flags.

Rory continued his excellent start to the season with another strong performance here to help his Dragons to victory. He continues to split his time between midfield and wing and seems proficient at either role, although his game definitely leans more outside at this stage where he can use his athleticism and elite left boot in space to break lines and lace out inside 50 targets.

If Sharp had a burst of speed and could use the footy more cleanly he'd be the standout 1. I've developed some reservations around how his current game translates to AFL level. Strikes me as a Jack Graham type that dominated as a manchild but lacked the speed to give himself any time and space in the middle once facing stronger faster opponents.

He's not as slow as Graham for mine. He has average speed but don't think he's slow like Graham. It's the lack of composure that's the bigger question for mine.

Possibly because I've seen more of him but he's my favourite of the Wright "brothers"

Has more composure to use his skills in a midfield role than what I've seen of Josh Lindsay too.

Should have headed down to Avalon Oval today to watch the U18 trials.

Tanner Armstrong, Sam Grlj & Cody Walker all playing.
