Well, I’m so glad you’re not our recruiting Manager then. Sharp looks like the most bankable player in this draft but you don’t want him at this stage 🤷‍♂️
he does all the defensive stuff as well. Tackles, 2-way running, etc..
Probably something missing from our midfield mix.

Sharp's kicking is on Taranto's level. Look at the way the ball drops on to the boot. It's always a floater or helicopter.
at this level they can get away with taranto kicks, they wont survive in the big stuff. we dont need another tarantuala. big no for me, we need someone who can hit targets.

When we're talking about pick 1-2 it's reasonable to discuss the weaknesses of a player. Kicking and limited athleticism is not something that is a minor thing.

I am not saying I am totally against Sharp as it's early. I am just not super in love with him as a prospect like others.

He’s a inside midfielder who does all the hard shit that makes blokes like Jagga look good

Hopefully we go the big man so we have a Duffman on the list. When was the last time we had a potentially competition best ruck?

Early days but at this stage looks like a very even draft.
Players like Grlj and Rodriguez probably available after top 10.
Can we find a way of splitting one of our picks for two in the 10 to 20 range?

APS footy kicked off this weekend, anyone know how you can access stats from the games?
It seems basically impossible unless you’re from the relevant school and assuming they track their own stats.

I did rankings last year to a reasonably poor result, but thought I’d try it again with the start of APS Footy the logical first point of review.

So here are my top 20 rankings thus far. I’ve not seen as much CTL, Colts and SANFL footy as some of the more renowned draft watchers, so this is all grain of salt stuff.

Will expand during the Champs to a top 40 I think.

Key to note this is not who I think will go pick 1 etc.; but my personal player rankings.

  1. Cooper Duff-Tytler
  2. Daniel Annable (Brisbane Academy)
  3. Dyson Sharp
  4. Fred Rodriquez
  5. Zeke Uwland (Suns Academy)
  6. Oliver Greeves
  7. Josh Lindsay
  8. Sam Grjl
  9. Riley Onley
  10. Willem Duursma
  11. Cody Curtin
  12. Wes Walley (WCE Academy)
  13. Sam Cummings
  14. Max King (Sydney Academy)
  15. Archie Ludowyke
  16. Beau Addinsall (Gold Coast Academy)
  17. Dylan Patterson (Gold Coast Academy)
  18. Noah Higgins-Hargreaves
  19. Liam Heatherton
  20. Rory Wright
Have at it.

Ollie played a little less through the midfield and more across half back in this game but still managed to find plenty of the ball and showed an improvement in his disposal by foot, getting involved in many of the productive chains of transition ball movement for the Academy. Ollie is one of the few pure midfielders in the open pool at the top end of this draft that has turned in consistently strong performances so far this season.

I’m going to say this as respectfully as I can but Grlj doesn't strike me as the 'best of the best' in elite talent to warrant a top 5 selection with our first two picks.

Yes his playing style is the type we could use on our list and he looks like he can have a solid AFL career but I'm very skeptical he's worthy of our highly valued first two picks.

More than happy to be proven wrong though.
Whether hes worthy of a top 5 pick or not doesn't really matter if there is no one better to select ahead of him. I know its early in the year but this draft doesn't look very strong

With Emmett and Murray splitting time with CDT in the ruck we got a chance to see him playing more as a key forward than he has been for Calder. He took up good positions, presented up at the ball carrier on a couple of occasions and competed well in the air including one excellent contested mark late in the game. It's been difficult for the talls in this completely unbalanced squad, but Cooper turned in one of the better performances from that contingent here.

Would you say Greeves is better at winning clearances than Smillie? Looks more natural to me, but I’m basing it on Smillie’s recent VFL performances. I can’t remember his U18 performances.

I think its too early to say that. Smillie was a fantastic clearance player last season, even during his slight form slump over the champs period he was still elite in that area. Greeves is also a fantastic clearance player... perhaps he might not get as many as Smillie but his movement is a little more dynamic through traffic than Smillies I feel (not that Smillie's was bad) so Greeves can burst clear through to the attacking side of the stoppage a little more consistently, where Smillie would would tend to swoop out laterally to find his space.

Thanks, maybe it’s that burst out of the stoppage that made me see it that way. I’ll have to go back and watch some of Smillie’s highlights from last season. Not sure if we’d draft someone like Greeves, but I like what I’ve seen so far this season, particularly if his kicking looks more like it did yesterday.

4 shots on goal is a decent effort for what felt like 4 minute stints in the ruck, 4 mins up fwd, and then however long on the bench, then repeat

will be glad to see him back at calder where he gets to play his main position for longer

I imagine every key tall in this squad will be very happy they don't have to play another Academy game. This was probably the most imbalanced team I've seen. CDT, Emmett, Ludowyke, Curtin, Heatherton, White, Murray... ridiculous really.

I'm more than comfortable with us picking this bloke. Not many rucks go top 10, but when they're good enough to go that high, they're generally a safe bet. I think only Gorringe and Vickery have been busts in the last 20 years, and they both went much lower than CDT is projecting.

The ones that have gone really high (Kreuzer [ruined by injury], Natanui, Jackson) have all been some of the top rucks in the league.
