With Emmett and Murray splitting time with CDT in the ruck we got a chance to see him playing more as a key forward than he has been for Calder. He took up good positions, presented up at the ball carrier on a couple of occasions and competed well in the air including one excellent contested mark late in the game. It's been difficult for the talls in this completely unbalanced squad, but Cooper turned in one of the better performances from that contingent here.

I love this bloke as a prospect

It's been a slower than expected start to the season for Louis Emmett, but he seems to be starting to hit his stride. He was the best of the tall contingent for the Academy in this game, showing his aerial strength as a forward and around the ground, as well as his ability to compete hard in the ruck and follow up at ground level.

I did rankings last year to a reasonably poor result, but thought I’d try it again with the start of APS Footy the logical first point of review.

So here are my top 20 rankings thus far. I’ve not seen as much CTL, Colts and SANFL footy as some of the more renowned draft watchers, so this is all grain of salt stuff.

Will expand during the Champs to a top 40 I think.

Key to note this is not who I think will go pick 1 etc.; but my personal player rankings.

  1. Cooper Duff-Tytler
  2. Daniel Annable (Brisbane Academy)
  3. Dyson Sharp
  4. Fred Rodriquez
  5. Zeke Uwland (Suns Academy)
  6. Oliver Greeves
  7. Josh Lindsay
  8. Sam Grjl
  9. Riley Onley
  10. Willem Duursma
  11. Cody Curtin
  12. Wes Walley (WCE Academy)
  13. Sam Cummings
  14. Max King (Sydney Academy)
  15. Archie Ludowyke
  16. Beau Addinsall (Gold Coast Academy)
  17. Dylan Patterson (Gold Coast Academy)
  18. Noah Higgins-Hargreaves
  19. Liam Heatherton
  20. Rory Wright
Have at it.
Patterson has been very impressive and I would say he’s moved up the boards of a lot of teams.

Onley on the other hand is probably trending the opposite direction. His kicking is pretty average.

I would also have Sharp, Uwland and Lindsay above Annable.

Excellent a ruck and a HBF, that’ll fix our midfield problems. 🙄
honestly i dont think this is the draft that fixes our midfield problems, its looking pretty shitty. gotta go best available in these cases. grildo the only one that looks like a genuine point of difference mid.

Think our midfield problems need a very specific answer; and that may not be best answered via the draft.

With Taranto and Hopper signed up for another three years, Dow seemingly coming into his own, Lalor, McAuliffe, Smillie and Hotton all likely to play; or at least rotate through the middle (and possibly Mansell, Green and Campbell too) we probably need speed through it. Grlj the only one that immediately jumps out; but it may be best to try to and use a trade/ free agency to address the deficiencies.

We shouldn’t make the same mistake North has seemingly made and drafted too many of the similar type of midfielder.

All fair comments.

For me this draft shapes as one which teams will have to determine what they value (attribute wise, skill wise, position wise) a lot earlier than usually such is the talent in this draft.

To that end, I value Annable’s balanced midfield attributes ahead of the other available midfielders.

But that will no doubt change when the champs arrive.

We haven’t even had champs yet???

Sharp had 20 touches in a half yesterday.

Greeves has had 20+ in two vfl games.

Hunter Holmes
Rory Wright
Hunter Wright
Sam Allen
NHH
Swadling
Cummings
Fred
Duursma

That’s off top of my head, plenty of those guys haven’t played midfield for academy yet due to terrible balance of team, but all have had big games in local u/18s. There will be others who come on through season.

Taranto and Hopper are not considerations. They’re place holders, and so too is probably Dow, otherwise we wouldn’t get smashed in there every week.

You’ve listed 2 guys who played midfield in juniors with any consistency, Smillie and McAullife, and McAullife was a pick 40.

Lalor will likely be a good mid but he really only played 2 midfield games last year. Hotton even less.

You’re basically hoping flankers become midfielders.

There are plenty of exciting mids outside Grlj in this class, as I’ve listed above, we are still only in April and haven’t played champs yet.

Edit: also we are not Norf, we drafted 4 talls last year and, as you listed, have plenty of flankers if you also include Banks, Brown, Clarke and Smith. We lack a ruck but I wouldn’t waste a top 5 pick on one unless they have vice like hands ala Darcy/Thilthorpe (hint cdt doesn’t) and an elite small forward.

I'd have Fred outside the top 12. Onley probably outside top 15 at this stage.

Sam Cummings won't surprise me if he's cemented top 10 soon. Similar with Rory Wright.

Dylan Alexander did a mock draft and has us taking
Pick 2 - Willem Duursma for the upside, needs to improve contest winning
Pick 3 - has us bidding on zeke uwland to keep GC honest. (Everything he says about zeke sounds like Liam baker tbh)
Pick 4 - we take Sam Grlj

I will fair dinkum spew up if we take a Duursma.

I will be honest if the kid gets a more contested game I don’t see why not. His brother Xavier Duursma isn’t soft by any means. I watch Essendon games fairly often. But everything I’ve seen from Willem doesn’t scream take him at 2.

He also has Dyson Sharp at pick 18 to Adelaide. Which annoyed me

I'm not a recruiter but there is a handful of players with more upside. Concerns me a lot that a junior player isn't somewhat a contested player.

The Griller. Best. Understand the Duursma pick, we need versatility. I just don't really want him if that makes sense lol.

Where did Sharp and CDT go?

Sharp pick 18 to Adelaide
CDT pick 1 to WCE
Josh Lindsay pick 5 to Dons
WCE trade picks 18/19? To Sydney for pick 6 and get Oliver Greeves

I tend to not value the Academy games as much as others. When they play well it’s a plus, when they don’t (and Fred didn’t really in either game) I tend to not see it in poor light.

I just don’t value those exhibition games much. I put a lot of stock in performances at the National Champs.

Also think both Sharp and Fred have been impacted by playing senior SANFL and WAFL football, and probably haven’t been in the position to remind us how good they are until last week.

No prospect is flawless, but I see those at the top of this draft class have more prevalent flaws than previous years. As a result I see players like Cumming, Hibbins-Hargreaves, Sam Grjl, Rory Wright and even the likes of Hunter Holmes to have a real opportunity to demonstrate that they can play as midfielders which could see them all jump into top 10-15 range.

Willem Duursma could be a pretty serious weapon used in the right mix.
He’s definitely not soft. He slants more uncontested, but that doesn’t mean he’s soft.

Hes 192cm and can play nearly every position on the ground. His skills are above average, on both sides of his body and has a really nice ability to space himself around contests. He’d compliment Lalor and Smillie very well. He’s would also give Yze a weapon to use in multiple different ways during a game that would provide a serious matchup issue for oppo coaches. He’s also able to accumulate pretty well for a taller mid.
Currently this season only 5 players inside the top 50 in average disposals per game are above 190cm. (Dawson, Cripps, Bont, Callaghan, T.Green).

Hes a Jordan Dawson type (2cm taller than Dawson) which is very important in modern footy.

If his name wasn't Duursma more posters in here would want him.
