Why ?

Balta is a gun CHB / FB that has 7/8 years left and is at the perfect age for our rebuild
And his contract will be 50% paid out in this years cap effectively making him a $500k x 7 year player
He is not a gun chb of fb.

We’re paying him as he’s an all Australian full back and he hasn’t proved anything close to that level over the course of a whole season.

Then you have not watched him closely

Balta is a rock down back and has versality to play Ruck / Fwd
If played full time FB/CHB he would be dominating that position and be AA

We need midfield power players who break the lines for our first 2 picks. How do we negotiate to get a few more earlier picks ? Maybe splitting roos pick if it's not top 5 into 2 picks thoughts.

We need quality not quantity

Our talls are set and we need elite mids and you get them with top 5 picks not 15-20
very compromised draft and top 5/6 is what we must take

Fair point. How do we go about getting a few extra quality picks like last year players out , future pick trade etc.

So we have only 2 first round picks this year , no 2 nd round , no 3 rd round
No 4th round either. Will get our F/S though I'd imagine.

We can probably trade F2, 3 or 4 into this year. Do it on the night before or after Kellaway bid.

Given we have an academy kids and F/S next year would be wise to move those picks so they don't get eaten up.

Hoping cap trading comes in soon and we will have a shed load of cap space after this year with no player having much $$$ left to pay on their contracts.

$17.7 mil cap space
we should be able to pay out 50% of Taranto , Hopper , Balta , Broad , Short contracts and have Prestia , Lynch deals ending with the remainder on less than $400k

Sam Cumming could hardly have been more impressive through the first two rounds of the SANFL U18 season. He's too powerful and evasive for this level, impossible to stop as he consistently navigates from inside the contest to the outside to release his teammates or create space to deliver a high quality ball. In this game he had his hand in a number of score involvements, including kicking a couple of crucial goals of his own as his Roosters side powered ahead in the second half to record a comfortable win.

Want this kid on our list next year
Exactly what we need

Also have the chance to use our salary cap this season to bring in draft picks for the very first time. Which also takes pressure off our salary cap in over paying players that haven't earnt it.

CDT will be the one who we will have to make a call on at pick 1.
He’s right in the Luke Jackson/De Koning mold of ruck/fwd type who in time will be a beast.
But are we going to go with another key position after last years big investment in talks…
Unless a couple of these mids who aren’t GC or swans academy tied then we may have to go best available.

Just makes the Noah Balta contract look even worse.

Luke Jackson is still getting dominated in the ruck on a weekly basis. And Freo look far worse with him in the ruck with Darcy injured. They can't win a clearance.

I would way rather a ruckman who is physically dominant and imposing. Xerri types. History has proven you can also find these types later in the draft or via trade/free agency

100% agree
Gawn is the only A grade ruck to win a flag recently.
Players like Nank and Soldo are what we need to target.

Lloyd meek perfect example at hawthorn

A very early look at a young man that seems destined to be a star of the future. The 16 year old Dougie Cochrane isn't draft eligible until 2026 but is already putting in elite performances at U18 level and building a very early case to be pick 1 in 18 months time. He's a unique blend of key forward and inside midfielder, possessing the size, athleticism and clean hands to dominate in the air combined with contested ball winning and classy skills.

JHF Mk2 😒

Yes I heard that his dad was trying to get him into Port's NGA a few months ago. But recent developments seem to have strengthened the rule that NGA kids need to be in the program before they turn 15 to be eligible for bid matching so if that holds Port should be out of luck.

His dad is an assistant, ex-player and his brother is now there. As big of a flight risk as we will likely see.

Shithouse cos if JHF is anything to go by they’ll end up paying buggar all in trade and somehow make WCE pick up most of the tab.
A shame as well as you'd be getting a Smillie size mid, with better athleticism, great kick and elite contested mark.
