South Australia remains unbeaten in the under-18 national championships after a seven-goal haul from a mid-sized marking forward helped propel the side to a thumping 76-point win over Western Australia on Sunday.
The home side was dominant from start to finish at Alberton Oval, working their way to a game-high margin of 82 points during the final term before eventually running out victors, 17.14 (116) to 6.4 (40).
South Australian captain and top-10 draft prospect Dyson Sharp was again a class above, rotating between midfield and forward roles and finishing with 33 disposals, six clearances, seven tackles and two goals.
However, the performance of one of Sharp’s Central District teammates – Cameron Nairn – was also a big talking point out of the match.
South Australia 4.5 7.8 12.12 17.14 (116)
Western Australia 1.1 3.1 4.2 6.4 (40)

BEST – SA: Cameron Nairn, Dyson Sharp, Sam Cumming, Bayln O’Brien, Bryce Sanders, Harley Barker, Aidan Schubert, Sam Ainsworth, Mitchell Marsh, Louis Kellaway.

GOALS – SA: Cameron Nairn 7, Dyson Sharp, Mitchell Marsh 2, Aidan Schubert, Zane Peucker, Jesse Nye, Sam Cumming, Tim Alver, Sam Ainsworth 1.
Geez we look strong this year. Go SA! Gotta be the strongest SA U18 side in a long, long time?

Not looking like a great year to be out of the draft. Would definitely love to get my hands on some premium SA talent.

Throw Dougie in and it’s the strongest Centrals side in the championship.

Pretty much Centrals have become Sandringham.

It’s not the strongest sa side in a while at all.

it’s just the other sides are very very bad.

Yea not sure they would get close to the team of Rankine, Rozee, Lukoscious, Hateley, etc.

The fact this SA side accounted for the Allies (considered the best team this year) and thumped vic metro, really highlights the limited depth of the draft.

Sharp, Schubert, Cumming, Barker, LeRay, Marsh, Nairn and Phillipou could all go top 25 - would have to be close to SA’s best in terms of sheer numbers. Always hard to compare drafts but I’m not sure I’m taking any of those before the top 10, maybe 15 of last year.

That's pretty much right.

Sharp might make top 10 last year. Schubert maybe late 1st God knows if there was a decent tall defender or 2 out there?

We really should be looking at the best Ruck options because I’ve a feeling our current pick 26 is going to look like 36 draft night or disappear completely in the NWM trade.

If we are unable to complete a deal for NWM and assuming Bergman stays (big assumption) I would be surprised if we traded away 2026 first round pick to get back in to this year to pick Sharp if he does drop to 5-10 range. I don't think the club will want to keep that 2026 first rounder imo

West Coast have picks 1-2 likely

Richmond have 3-4

He just doesn't get past them.

If we give up 2026 to get into this draft we won’t have points needed to match IF we got a certain NGA we want without going into deficit for 2027, a draft where we need points as well.

We don’t have to get rid of a first round pick cause we might have a first round nga bid.

Despite the constant panic otherwise, you don’t lose your first pick if you have an nga.

I'm not sure there's any point in keeping that first round pick. I'm 99% sure in some way it'll be traded, could even be that it's traded next year to get more picks in 2027.

We will have enough picks to match bids for Cochrane in 2026, even if we keep Bergman and Butters.

We can always use the "drafterpay" and bring picks forward too.

I would probably go the other way, and trade out of this draft into 2026 draft if that’s a possibility.
I still believe you need to take 3 picks in a draft? Maybe that includes rookie elevation as well but can't remember the rules on top of my head

Sorry I’m sure it’s been mentioned before but our first pick is likely to be late 20s at this stage is it?
26 currently.

But tricky to know exactly. Suns have three picks ahead of us, Sydney two, Brisbane one, Essendon four - all have some academy bids in there.

Plus FA compensation.

Our second rounder probably drops down to 30 ish, whilst our third (maybe fourth too depending on how many get taken in the draft and what happens with points) comes up from the 40s.

Suns, Lions, Sydney, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, West coast, Freo - all have one or more NGAs or FSs that’ll go in the first 30 picks. So they all may be on the hunt for picks and may be willing to move backwards in the draft.

That is absolute aids if Tasmania comes in aswell

I would imagine Port will be doing a lot of planning heading into the 2027 draft with the amount of NGA and FS prospects in that draft and thinking out potential hypotheticals regarding where those players will be drafted and how many points they will need as well as the looming inclusion of Tasmania and how it will affect the drafts after 2027.

Yea minimum three per year including rookie elevations.
I would consider elevating Benny Barrett if it enables Port to acquire Indy Cotton as a Cat B rookie. I believe clubs are only able to list two players onto its Cat B list at a time and I think Jacob Moss is contracted till 2026 according to footywire.

Not the most ideal year to make big cuts to the list considering the lack of draft quality this year. Take a minimum of six delistings/retirements to make up for Liddy, Mackinlay and Ramm joining Port. That means three spots for the draft. I expect at least Soldo to move on and potentially Lord as well if a Vic club can guarantee him game time and job security.

I don’t know why the obsession with Americans is always focused on 205cm+ giant ex basketball players when the most translatable sport position in America is American footballs cornerbacks.

These are generally 177-193cm guys quick as lightning and have to track receivers and prevent them catching the ball via spoiling or catching it themselves and there’s a lot of contact allowed so they’re used to that. Also have to tackle and stop pretty powerful guys. Strong , fast, have to track the ball in the air.

And tight ends are perfect mobile ruck/forwards.

Can absorb a lot of damage and have great hands.

The weird obsession with basketball, even though there’s literally another form of football these kids excel at.

Soldo (even for last pick in the draft) and Lord trade

Boak retire

Anastasopoulos, Williams, McEntee, Atkins, Finlayson, Burton - I expect at least 3 of them to be delisted

Sounds strange saying it, but i'd probably keep Atkins for another year. He's reasonable depth at the very least. Finlayson gets a 1 year deal simply for depth.

Delist Anastas, Williams and Mcentee.
