Sounds strange saying it, but i'd probably keep Atkins for another year. He's reasonable depth at the very least. Finlayson gets a 1 year deal simply for depth.

Delist Anastas, Williams and Mcentee.
Can someone head to the fish and chip shop and tell Macca his account has been hacked?

Ratkins is actually a pretty good footballer and a positive influence among the playing group.

Would possibly accept a reduced package?
Regardless of my opinion about him, I believe there's a chance he's rookie listed for next year whilst having a development coaching role of some sort

Oudshoorn-Bennier is one to keep an eye on (other than Barker). If he gets to us I am definitely taking him. Cumming could also drop to us, wouldn't rule him out.

Tom Burton from Western Jets is another, Brodie Atkins from Gippsland Power and Xavier Bamert from Sandringham Dragons are all midfield options who should be around our mark (may be not Burton by end of the year, he could storm up rankings).

Charlie McKinnon been kicking bags and has excellent forward craft, would be surprised if he got through to our pick but if he did, that's a tall forward I'd seriously consider given I have lost all faith in Lord.

If we wanted to prioritise a Bergman type 3rd tall (despite Bergman signing on), I'd like at Xavier Taylor from Eastern Ranges

With Soldo leaving, we'll look at a ruck for sure I think so Flynn Penry and Zac Harding (prefer the latter) are also possibilities around our pick.

And lastly, 3 smokeys to keep an eye on are Luke Hallet, Felix Kneipp and Lachy Hicks. Could be bolters

Edit: Lachy Hicks is a bottom ager.....

If one of Lord or Finlayson goes, probably would be ideal to nab a key forward. Only issue is that most of the "decent" KPP will be gone by then.

This year's draft just had to be that weak huh.

Think there'll be some developmental types.

Marsh, Schubert, Ludowyke I expect as the first 3 to go

Curtin will be around the end of first round mark but also plays KPD

Then in the next ring, you have Hetherton, McKinnon

Then there's the fwd/ruck types in Taj Murray, Flynn Penry, Zac Harding, Lachie Monteath

Smokey's probably would be Josh Shepherd as a tall that plays both ends and Jobe Scapin as medium talls.

Of course they range from a first rounder to possibly 3rd rounder but I think any of the names I've mentioned would be worth a punt over keeping Finlayson or Lord. McKinnon in particular is my favourite because of his contested ability and sticky hands.

I do like Murray as that mobile ruck forward but he is gonna take awhile with his slight frame. 4 goals though in the match against SA earlier this year. So that’s promising. Wonder what his draft range is though?

I would love to draft Cody Curtin partly because of my amusement of seeing Dan and him duke it out on all possible showdowns. However it would be a miracle if he slid to Port’s first pick. Would be mad not to draft him by then.

But the first thing a key forward needs to have is being a good kick for goal.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Jobe Shanahan was right there at our pick last year.

People may remember my meltdown on 2024 draft thread when I was shocked Reid and Shanahan slipped through to our pick (Reid was my preference by Shanahan no.2 then Hynes).

Shanahan was the best key forward in last year's draft with a beautiful kick. Why Richmond picked Faull and Armstrong over him is beyond me

Taj Murray I expect to be 2nd rounder. Cody Curtin would be the dream if he got there haha

Knew I forgot someone from my list, did the post on top of my head but home now and went over my list.

Tairon Ah-Mu is on the 2nd tier alongside Hetherton and McKinnon. Recently gone into the ruck too. Keep an eye on his progression through ruck cause he could be the best fwd/ruck available end of the year.

Kane Cornes reckons the first round of the draft should be completely pure. Then all the father-son and academy stuff from pick 19 onwards can happen then.
He doesn't understand the mechanics behind it though.....

Clubs run the academies and invite players to train on and develop. If you gave less incentive to clubs and said you can't take anyone within first rounder then they won't be investing as much in developing players and that leads to a comp wide talent issue which we're already facing with the AFL bringing in more teams.

I get that F/S is slightly different and more luck based. They should just apply a tax to get F/S prospects rather than giving them a discount. That way clubs would be far more prudent in matching a bid.

The AFL imo can't get rid of NGA or Northern academies. They're too far down this path to turn around now and rip it all up.

It's not weak. It's just pushed it's weak by Vics because the Vic talent is weaker than past drafts. It's a SA super draft and WA talent is a lot better too

So Port should just focus on drafting SA lads and to a lesser extent, WA lads this year? What if and I only say what if, most of the SA lads are taken by the time Port enters the draft? Surely, there will be a player or two that will slide to Port's first pick as it stands.

There’s no quality tall defenders.

The number one pick is likely a ruckman.

The best midfielder doesn’t have too many other strings to his bow.

A least 5 of the top 20 are Academy or F/S .

Both WA and SA look stronger than traditionally strong Vic where there is more depth.

I’m ok with sitting this one out.

Look for a couple of likely project players and maybe get lucky with late picks.

Some of the possible candidates we could draft with our low picks (3rd rounder onwards).

Dusty Geister (192cm KF) playing SANFLs U18 and Reserve
Latrelle Sumner-Pickett playing SANFL Reserves - currently 2nd highest goal kicker in the Reserves comp
Gabriel Stumpf (196cm) last years draft candidate, started playing as KPD this year (incredibly athletic)

I would use our 2nd round pick on this years draft.
There are a few smokies and hidden gems in this poor draft that will surface.

We need a cultural reset.

I dont want Ratkins, Burton or Finlayson anywhere near our club

2018 was a super draft for SA. This is not

I can see Marsh and Cumming doing pretty well in the AFL. But they probably would have been picked in the 40s last year, around where Angus Clarke went.

The rest would need a lot of work.

At the top of my head in no particular order, I would be keen for the following with our first pick as it stands.
  • Taj Murray
  • Harvey Barker
  • Sam Cumming
  • Matthew LeRay
  • Cody Curtin
One of these guys surely will slide.

I'm a huge advocate for acquiring Latrelle Sumner-Pickett because he is a small forward and also has the name Pickett. Port needs a Pickett in the list.

I maintain what I said before. The absolute top end of this draft is weak indeed. But there's a difference between weak in star talent and weak in depth.

The former is true for this draft. But the latter isn't. If you're in picks 20 to 50, I think you could get some great role players that would eliminate some of the deadwood on your list. The star talent isn't there but also no team has 22 star players. You need good role players to ensure the bottom 6 players in the side aren't so horrible that they are a liability (looking at Burton, McEntee, Finlayson etc). So I think where Port are in his draft with their 2nd rounder is a good spot. There'll be some variety in positions available.

I would love us to find a way to get Aiden Schubert without losing any future picks.
Great contested mark can fill in at ruck and finds the ball up ground. Reminds me of Sam Darcy.

At this stage Taj Murray out of your list is the most likely to be in range with our 2nd round pick.

Didn't watch the Sturt u18 game today but think Gill Wakelin may have been thrown forward finally. A position where he excelled u16. Not a draftable prospect as a tall defender but as a tall forward if he can hit the form he had in u16 then he might be worth a late pick. 17 disposals, 1 goal, 9 marks

Philopou 2 goals 31 touches and 6 clearances , would love port to get him considering his hype before the injury
