I would say that we will keep 49 in our back pocket with Gold Coast having first access to it if they need it for points and trade for Essendon's future 3rd Round. In the unlikely event of something better being offered we'll take it. We'll upgrade the 3 guys and that's all folks.
I would imagine that pick 49 will move up a few spots once all the F/S, NGA and Academy have been matched.

It would be wise to see where that pick 49 will be in the end.

Even though Port will upgrade Lai, Ramm and T.Cochrane to the main list, if my man Latrelle is still on the board, Port ought to grab him.

I agree to an extent with the club's position but also not fully. I personally wouldn't have traded out of this draft in the 2nd and 3rd round but the club does more due diligence than I do so I'll trust them on this.

To put it simply, my general take on this draft is that from top to bottom its a bunch of 2nd round picks when compared to other drafts (there are a couple of prospects that are exception to this who will go top 5 on the night, but this is just my general take)

The club sees it the same way but considers it to be a big bunch of 3rd round picks. So they've opted to elect out of this completely.

Its a solid strategy if the draft is quite even, and the level of the SA boys being quite good all round. With mid season drafts and local talent always with the possibility to return home it is risk minimisation and letting time sort out those who develop further into their careers and in minor leagues than gambling on drafting ones who may or may not.

I'm done with Wade Thompson/Marlon Motlop types .... I know the name is appealing.

You guys need to give up on this random Latrelle Sumner-Pickett obsession. If we wanted him, we wouldn't be trading away all our picks.

The last time I remember this board becoming randomly obsessed with an expected late pick was James van Es, and he's since been delisted without playing a game, so that was all a waste of time.

That you were annoyed by it means it wasn’t a complete waste of time 🤣🤣🤣

I remember all the commotion about Sam Colquhoun for weeks leading up to the draft.
Draft came and went and he wasn't picked by anyone!

Colquhoun was picked by us and played. I think he was a rookie pick so there might have been a lot of talk about him missing the main draft.

The Sumner-Pickett story is interesting because hes an overager and about to break out in the SANFL. Willie Rioli and a couple other guys followed the same path to AFL

There's something wrong when the reigning premiers, who picked up the two biggest names in trade period, have 3 picks before us in the draft.
I do not think Oscar Allen and Sam Draper are the two biggest names in trade period. In fact I don't rate Draper at all and there's question mark around Allen although I think he'll do well at Brisbane

Sumner-Pickett get him in

Was more a comment on the lack of a graders that actually got traded I guess, but yes you're correct I exaggerated a bit there.

Can't help but think we messed up our premiership window by chasing average players when we could of got players the caliber of Petracca or Curnow. We sold Houston for unders, paid our last two 1st rounds for Ratugulea, Lukosius, BZT.

Cripps on the trade and draft strategy
“Obviously we’ve lost a fair bit of games experience, 1373 (games) in the last two years and we were mindful of bringing in some players that we think can add depth to the list but also play some roles where we’ve perhaps got some gaps within our team. So that was the focus. We also wanted to reserve our draft capital going into future years and we were quite comfortable moving picks from this year into future drafts. We obviously attacked last year’s draft and we rated that really highly and we’re looking forward to getting stuck into the next two years. We’ve still got our pick 49 and 85 sitting there this year so we will take them into draft night and we’ve got the flexibility and some options around what we do with them.”

Cripps on draft plans for this year
“We’ll upgrade three rookies and as the rules allow, if you do upgrade those three rookies, they can be the changes that go towards draft so technically by the rules, we don’t have to select. But we have picks 49 and 85 and we’ve got list spots. I think every club now has opportunities and flexibility on draft night to make decisions around what you do, and you’ve got the capacity to upgrade rookies post-draft so there are a lot of different levers at our disposal. We’re open-minded on which way we go – we may select, we may not, we may upgrade another rookie post-draft. We’ll work through that as the two nights unfold.”

I agree with keeping pick 49

As pick 49 could end up pick 39 from all the academy & father sons picks that other clubs have to use to get the players they want (for example)

Suns could use 4 picks (15, 18, 24 & maybe 28) on Zeke Uwland
Suns could use 3 picks (29, 36 & 42) on Dylan Patterson
Brissy could use 3 picks (17, 23 & 44) on Daniel Annable

lets see what players are around before trading the pick
