Twomey saying we still might not use any picks, but even our pick 85 could land in the 50s

A minimum of 44 players when there are 43 picks in the first two rounds of the draft.

You could think so few draft picks a few years out from Tasmania coming in would be a massive concern for the AFL.

Just as a guesstimate from draft watchers, where do you think 49 could land on draft night, as in position, not player.

Highest 41, more likely 43/45.

It depends on bids of players who fit in the 20-50 bracket and whether clubs take them.

Addinsall, King, Ison, Prindable, Coulson, Murray, Carmichael, Kyle, White, Chamberlain, Macarthy, Sweid, El Achkar, Mellor, Fincher, Kellaway, Williams x 2, Walley, Whan, Darcy.

If we trade out, I suspect it’ll be to a club wanting some extra points.

If an academy player is drafted Number 1 it could go sub 40.

Consensus is there'll be 55ish picks and it'll be the lowest ever.

So I wouldn't be surprised if it gets to low 40s
Thats heinously low.

So much for strengthening talent pathways.

Who needs talent when no one goes to remote places to find it anymore, college kids or bust.

It's definitely concerning. Which is why it's important to keep the academies running (but also understand the uneven nature of the draft).

Expect numbers to jump back up next 2 years though. Looking strong

The academies are producing more talent, but it’s a slow burn and they aren’t producing the depth yet. There has also been some recognition that some players take longer to develop and should be available in the academy longer or as a rookie.

I think this draft is a combination of things.
  • clubs stocked up heavily last year
  • Tasmania’s entry is seeing clubs get nervous re taking on lots of long term development players right now
  • the rule changes have hurt trades and drafting, meaning clubs have to be more astute with what they chase. Ie Port is it better that have pick 27-35 this year that could net us an ok player or better to have more leverage and capital to chase future NGA/FS players in 2026/27.
  • MSD has picked out all the mature talent
  • preseason supplemental period has meant clubs don’t have to rush and can try players out rather than speculate at the draft
  • MSD also allows clubs to take a short term need, ie hold a spot free and then use that at the MSD to cover a short term issue (ruck or defender)

So all of that together and then historically weak Vic metro and country programs, sees clubs opting out of this one.

Perhaps this is why ‘old lists’ like Geelong and Collingwood are smart in a market where there is less talent.

Quality players get spread further across the whole AFL when Tassie comes in, and possibly the NT if that ever happens.

You think our depth sucks now. If it gets up to 20 clubs, it’s gonna be even harder for some clubs.

Playing SANFL is a real issue for us, development is so important.

Also if talent is reduced, perhaps 16 on the field would have done more for the AFL game reducing congestion and managing reduced talent on average across clubs, without all their silly rule changes.

What’s the knock on Pickett? Any Charlie Cameron vibes about him?

Let's be honest, there's too many drafts.

There shouldn't be a preseason draft. If this scenario with Ah Chee comes up, they should be forced into signing with their current club, or nominating for the National draft.
The Ah Chee type scenario should be worked out by the AFL through a system that works out how many points he is worth. Adelaide then is forced to hand over a pick or picks that compensate Brisbane.

He will be well and trully gone but I like Jevan even more.

Woodville-West Torrens gun Jevan Phillipou has naturally leant towards St Kilda over the past three years after older brother Mattaes was drafted to Moorabbin.

“I guess the Saints, wanting them to do well because he (Mattaes) is playing for them,” Phillipou told foxfooty.com.au. “But when he’s not playing I couldn’t really care less to be honest. I just want him to do well.

“I used to like the Swans. When Paul Roos was coaching, Dad really liked the Swans and then when John Longmire took over, we were big fans of him. I feel like I play a little bit like some of the players in that team.

Apart from that though, I’d pick Port over the Crows for sure. I just don’t like the Crows, honestly, I don’t like them at all. Dad played a little bit of SANFL for Port as well so that might be part of it.”

Same with free agency compensation, that should be a players point value worked out and the club receiving forced to compensate, instead of screwing over the 16 other clubs not involved, as per the current system.

Or it’s used as a proper equalisation mechanism, and a sliding scale from top to bottom of the ladder is used to deduct points, and push a pick back. Ie Top team has to pay 100% value, Bottom team pays 0%. Compensation is decided by AFL, and an actual Pick is given.

If the value of a player is say Pick 15, and the Lions have 18, they can’t do it until they push up the order.

That's started a bit of sulking from the usual suspects on social media.

Draft tampering!

When did his dad play for Port?

:D
