AFLW 2025 AFLW Season

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Noticed that the VFLW season has been pushed back a month starting Apr 19-20 with the last round to be held Aug 2-3 better aligning with the AFLW season which begins Aug 11.

In 2024 the VFLW final round was held June 22 and the first round of AFLW wasn't until August 30.

This means that AFLW players are better able to include VFLW matches as part of their lead up to R1.

This is much better scheduling. Ideally, you would like to run VFLW and AFLW concurrently but I guess there would be logistical problems with that.

Common sense here, much better alignment but also makes sense for those Tam Luke like replacement signings.

Richmond is excited to announce the appointment of former AFL star Brendan Fevola as a specialist coach for the upcoming AFLW season.
Fevola, one of the most talented and iconic forwards in AFL history, will bring his vast experience and unique skillset to the Tigers, focusing on key aspects of forward play, development, craft, and skill acquisition.
The 44-year-old is no stranger to coaching, having held the senior coach position at Yarrawonga in the strong Ovens and Murray Football League. He also coached the country powerhouse’s interleague side for two years.

Richmond Head of Women’s Football Kate Sheahan said that Richmond’s players would benefit greatly from Fevola’s expertise and energy.
“To have a former champion of the game so passionate and invested in women’s football is exactly the type of person we want involved in our program,” Sheahan said.
“His energy is infectious; he has coached his own team, and his on-field resume speaks for itself. However, what has really stood out when talking to Brendan—who is, of course, a father of four girls—is his genuine excitement for women’s football.
“Brendan will regularly be on the track at our training sessions, and our players are thrilled to have him on board.”

Fevola is a three-time All Australian and two-time Coleman Medallist. He booted 623 goals across 204 games.
In other AFLW coaching changes, assistant coach (backs) Nathan Chapman will step back from the line coaching position in the AFLW program, due to his increasing commitments with Prokick Australia.
Chapman, who will remain at Richmond, where he has been since 2019, is the Director and Founder of Prokick, a company that coaches emerging Australian punters towards scholarships and contracts in US college football and the NFL.
Prokick Australia has facilitated over 270 full scholarships to US colleges, with 29 players receiving NFL contracts.

“Nathan will remain a big part of our program; however, due to Prokick continuing to expand and the increasing demands that come with that, he will step away from his line coaching position,” Sheahan said.
“What Nathan is doing with Prokick is incredible, and at the same time, we are rapt that our AFLW players will be able to continue working with him going forward, because he makes a big impact with our athletes as well.”
Richmond will announce a replacement for Chapman at a later date.

Looking after our forwards.
In all seriousness I think he has a fair bit to add to the program.
Very talented player and if at the very least he can pass on his kicking technique to our girls that would be awesome.
Here is the reveal on his radio show. Didn't know the Box family are Tigers. (bar Fifi)

For Old blokes like us it's burned into our memory!

Fev didn't cover himself in glory when he moved up North in his twilight years, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. Having four daughters only adds to his impressive resume.

Fev was struggling with addictions and marriage breakdown, had struggles and didn’t have the discipline of the modern players that’s for sure.
But
As an undersized FFwd (6”3)in an average team that through his career only managed a winning percentage of less than 38%.(37.76)
He averaged more goals than Buddy per game.
Buddy had a winning percentage of over 60% (62.85).

Let that sink in.
Lot easier kicking goals when your getting things your own way.

And he wasn’t some high functioning super athlete, just a bloke who kept fit.

Richmond Football Club advises that its VFLW alignment with Port Melbourne Football Club will not continue for the 2025 season.
Richmond Head of Women’s Football, Kate Sheahan thanked the entire Port Melbourne Football Club for the past four years.
“Our partnership with Port Melbourne has been successful across the past four years and mutually beneficial for both Club’s up to this point,” she said.
“Because of the start date of the 2025 AFLW season being brought forward and the increasing demands of pre-season and the AFLW competition, we will not be having an alignment with Port Melbourne this year.
“On behalf of the Club we thank everyone from Port Melbourne for their contributions across the past four years and we wish them all the best for the upcoming season.”
Sheahan said the Club was working through its future second tier options.

Intwesting one , what do interstate teams do

GWS and Sydney played 5 games each in the VFLW comp in 2024 and except for 1 Syd game played quite a few AFLW players and pretty much smashed everyone.

In Adelaide their SANFLW regular season ran from March to June and AFLW players were scattered around the clubs and figure prominently in that comp.

I dare say it’s the same in WA. Not sure about QLD.

Ran into a bloke yesterday connected to a rival W club . Was fairly critical of our program , reckons we didn’t take full advantage of entry concessions and academy listings and that we only had 2 good players he rated , mon and Kate Dempsey

Results would suggest he is more right than wrong in regards to our program.

Unless he knows something I don’t , and he prob does of course , did we pass on opportunities to list youngsters . From what I could make out if you had talent in your academy areas they could be listed , either we had none or didn’t bother . Given it’s been pretty barren ground for men , no surprises same apply for W

Encouraging to know that other clubs are employing people who have no idea

You’d like to think the board is across all that and for better or worse they only made the inaugural coach pay the price.
I dont want to re-hash it all but..
Sheerin is a talent no doubt, but shes a 6 week injury away from retirement player.
Yassir, I’m not clear exactly where she’s at or what exactly happened but it seemed pretty real she was a hairs breadth away from playing with Essendon this coming season.
I would hope that if those events are viewed as another red flag under Sheehan that somebody is that far up her arse nothing is left in her hands.

Bringing in Beruldsen and the import seems a change in direction with a focus on running the ball.
I really would like to see a successful female football person in Sheehans role and we see that back of her.

where did you get that info?
on RFC instagram it says she's signed on until 2026 (2 years?)

I thought it was just for this season.....maybe there was a follow up announcement that I missed.

'Yas' for Richmond as Yassir re-signs

Richmond is pleased to announce that midfielder Emelia Yassir has re-signed with the Club for the upcoming AFLW season.
