Gather Round tickets snapped up in record time

The AFL is pleased to announce that more than 195,000 Gather Round…Festival of Footy tickets have sold… with five of the nine games sold out, 20,000 more than this time last year.

Member on sale on Tuesday saw a significant uplift in demand for tickets this year, selling more than 100,000 tickets in the first four hours, in comparison to the same amount in 24 hours last year.

This year there are an extra 47,000 tickets on offer for fans with the two Saturday matches being ticketed separately.

Tickets still remain for Collingwood vs Sydney Swans on Friday night, Carlton vs West Coast on Saturday afternoon, Melbourne vs Essendon on Saturday night and a very limited number of restricted view tickets and tickets for the Pepsi Collective for Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn on Sunday evening.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said it was clear Gather Round momentum was not slowly down.

“The demand for tickets this year was significantly higher than the first two Gather Rounds, with more than 195,000 tickets being purchased in the first two days,” said Mr Dillon.

“A ticket to the matches at the Barossa Park was always going to be one of the hottest tickets in town and the fans have certainly illustrated that by selling out both matches so quickly.”

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said: “Gather Round continues to exceed all expectations.

“We are honoured that so many footy fans from around the country are making the commitment to travel to our beautiful state to experience this event like no other.

“They’ll be truly welcome.

“If you haven’t got a ticket already – get in quick!”

Tickets for the remaining matches can be found here.

Could be a good chance of a record round if games get even close to expectations:

Rich/Carl - 80k
Haw/Ess - 80k
Geel/Freo - 25k
Syd/Bris - 35k
WB/Nth - 30k
Coll/Port - 60k
Adl/Stk - 45k
Mel/GWS - 20k
WC/GC - 45k

Totals 420k and beats the current record by 5k. The above estimates are reasonably conservative as well.

Saturday's games in Vic might suffer a little due to the ridiculous heat forecast - 37 degrees is not conducive to getting people to go out and be part of a large crowd.

Melbourne v GWS should get to 25k but the weather is looking very grim - 20-40mm of rain expected and its going to rain all day and we are against the F1. Expect it to be 18-22 range unfortunately.

We got 27k against them in Round 1 2016 and we were a far worse proposition coming off 2015 than we are now.

Dogs/North sales looks a lot like a 25-28k including likely walk ups to me. Looking a bit low. Dogs would rather go to the week after.

Guys! It is always a challenge for me to find this thread for the new year but thankfully Dave10 helped me out with a link.

Let's get onto it and boy am I pumped about some big games this week at the 'G

I am damn pumped about Hawks v Dons. I am thinking after last Friday night, Hawk fans will be damn eager to get to the 'G against a familiar foe and this is our first game of the season, so we could produce something real big Friday.

Bit surprised they didn't have the Dogs as the away team this week and make next week's special game their first home game of the year.

35k more a realistic number for Adelaide/St.Kilda.

Update on ticketing. Now a fully ticketed match. All GA / GA members must upgrade to reserved seats.

This is a great sign.

Richmond V Carlton also no more GA on sale and probably max 100 tickets left for the public.

If only it wasn’t F1 weekend and accom wasn’t more expensive that my weekly mortgage [emoji28]

Adelaide have never failed to get 35k for their first home game of the year and almost all have been over 40k. Even excluding Gather Round you averaged nearly 41k last season. Is there a reason you're pessimistic about this week?

Going by the ticketing sites, I reckon:
Rich/Carl - 86k
Haw/Ess - 83k
Geel/Freo - 25k
Syd/Bris - 32k
WB/Nth - 35k
Coll/Port - 60k
Adl/Stk - 42k

WC/GC - 50k

Should smash the record.

I’m still sceptical about whether Friday nights game draws 84,000. I reckon 80-82,000 seems bang on from what I’m seeing in terms of sales.

There might be a bit of rain On Sunday. St.Kilda aren’t much of a draw card, last 4 crowds against St.Kilda 34,549, 33,805, 28,783, 39,984.

And here we were being told it’s not worthy of opening the season. Crowd and Game turned it on. 🤷‍♂️

Putting my hand up for niche stat of the year:

Crowds closest to a multiple of 10,000*

*Up until the 1960s many crowds were only reported to the nearest thousand - there are around 500 of exactly 10k, 20k or 30k.

Actually surprised there's nor more GF on this list tbh.

As expected, they’ve commenced selling seating within the AFL reserved to the public.

And general admission (ticketed seating) all through the top deck of the AFL members

Ponsford Stand
  • Q31-Q36 rows EE-MM

AFL Reserve
Please note, seating in the AFL Reserve is available to AFL members only.
  • Q17-Q26 rows U-DD
Surprised they haven’t opened up Q37-40 instead

Just checked the MCC. Pre sales are pretty decent for this type of fixture. They’ve pre sold 2/3 of S37/38 top deck of members so this indicates they’re planning for the reserve to be reasonably crowded.

I’m still sticking with my estimate. I will go with 80-81,000!

Public tickets still selling well. There was around 1400 left at 2,30pm, now around 800. Might be standing room only by game time. Sticking with 83k. Will be the Hawks third biggest home crowd ever.

Still think there will be plenty of spare space in the AFL / MCC members. The unknown is how many GA tickets they sold and whether they will need to send overflow into the AFL section. If they don’t it might be 80K max. If there’s a lot of GA’s to cater for, then it’s closer to the figure you suggest.
