Plan for Round 1 looks to be to stack Renegades and Stars players?

Given the double round the question will users go for Sam Harper of the Stars or Tim Siefert of the Renegades? There is also a question mark on Glenn Maxwells fitness 3 weeks out. Im planning at the moment he isnt ready to go.

Still trying to get my head around 'The Flex' , from a couple of guys on Honeyball:

"
Nathan from SuperCoach Guns @SuperCoachGuns

“The flex position I believe, will radically change how you pick a squad for multiple reasons. For starters, it spreads out how much cash you have to spend per spot, which will immediately have an impact on how strong your Round 1 team can be.

“Then you have the infinite VC loop opportunities that the position brings. Since your round is set up with your best 11 scoring players out of 12, this means you could potentially VC loop without having to cop one of your emergencies in the event they do poorly. A fantastic addition which has added a completely new strategy to initial team selection.”

"
Brain, @InsightFSports podcaster, @SC_BRAIN

“My first reaction on the Flex position was that of skepticism. Purely because initially I felt like it levelled the playing field a little by giving everyone a plan B with your lowest score dropping out each round. But with a bit more thought, you can exploit the Flex to increase the level of upside in your squad and open up dual position flexibility with loops.

“Tactically, having a dual position player in your Flex seems like the best way forward. A BAT/BWL player preferable but I also don’t mind having a WKP/BAT (like a Josh Inglis) as we know the WKP position yields the most fielding points. Having Inglis in Round 1 at Optus Stadium and being able to then free up your BAT position for genuine all-rounders would be an advantage ahead of Perth’s Round 2 double.

“In addition to this, having a BAT/BWL player in your Flex could allow you to go with a high-upside batsman in your BAT like Josh Brown or Jake Fraser-McGurk, removing the risk of failure if they cop a good rock early.

“The only thing I certainly won’t be doing is playing a BAT or BWL only player in the Flex. Need to utilise it as a DPP to make the most of it.”"

If im reading correctly how the Flex works is with squads now 18 players all up, you have to select 12 players. The best XI will count, with the user allowed to exclude the lowest score or in case one player misses out. There tended to be a fair amount of late withdrawl of players on Game Day last season, so im assuming thats why the rule was implemented.

Anybody up to date on the availability of the international players from other countries?
Dont forget we have the ILT20 which overlaps on Jan 11 , 2025- Feb 19 , 2025.

Early names I can see: Colin Munro, Sherfane Rutherford, Tom Curran, Tye, Warner, Chris Lynn, Jamie Overton, James Vince, Akeal Hosein, Daniel Sams are the names that stand out that may potentially leave during the tournament. Although I think in Warners case, he will go to ILT20 when the Thunder season is officially over. It also looks like most of the Test players from January 8 to the Final will be available.

Im going to look to avoid Matt Short in Round 1 just because its at Manuka Oval in Canberra and he didnt score well there last season (scored 40 points). Not sure what kind of wicket we get there, as scoring was tougher there last season. But with Adelaide having a double in round 2, then will be the time to bring him in, when I may be able to get a slightly reduced price.

Harper looks as cheap as chups compared to those other keepers. And he batted well in one of the games against WA in the One Dayers at the MCG recently. Im hoping the Stars promote him up the order and if they do, this could be a steal. At the moment no one really knows their order, with Tom Rogers I assume likely to open.

Stoinis was a failure in the BBL last season. But I cant resist his form and if ive heard things right he has put his hand for a leadership role in this Stars team. He also was smacking them for fun in the T10 league in Abu Dhabi on the weekend. At $84k or so, it feels like it has cash cow potential.

Jake Fraser-McGurk, almost a lock for a 160% strike rate every innings his plays. Given he went and was sold in the IPL last night for $1.64 AUD million, ill take him at the bargain price of $124k. With SOS and Finch now gone as openers, the role is his.

Ben Duckett is unlikely to play in the BBL in the early parts. Im not sure if he will play much this tournament- not sure if he will be home for Christmas. Englands white ball kicks off on January 23rd, 2025. I like Beau Webster in that case to bat at 3. Likely to get an over or 2 with his spinners.

Zampa at 80k or so I also see as abit of a cash cow and job security.

Renshaw- Job security as the 3 test players are on duty. Also may be given an odd over or two with the ball but unlikely with Brisbanes stacked bowling lineup.

Ellis at 110k- will likely get death overs .

My XI firming, thinking Big Show wont be available in 3 weeks time:

Playing XI (Likely 1st Round):

Jake Fraser-McGurk (Bat)
Sam Harper (wicket keeper)
Webster (Bat)
Aaron Hardie (Bat)
Stoinis (Bat)
Will Sutherland (Bat)
Tom Curran (Bowler)
Chris Green (Bowler)
Kane Richardson (Bowler)
Nathan Ellis (Bowler)
Zampa (Bowler)

Bench Players:

Abbott
Buckingham
Konstas
Jack Edwards
Siefert

Flex Player:
Hayden Kerr

Budget of the team: $1,922,200 of the allocated $2 mill.

VC and C options- Stoinis in his hometown of Perth first up, and Fraser McGurk.

Don't do it !!!!

Yep last year he was used down the order too much. Last game in the BBL he was batting at 8.

But its a keep your eyes out on Harper. He just batted really well in the One Day Cup. Duckett I reckon is unlikely to play give that his in Englands Test squad and probably will play white ball series in late January in India. Maybe the Stars may be tempted to bring Stoin back to his opener role. Either way its safe to say, I reckon 2 of the 3 will open: Sam Harper, Stoinis or Tom Rogers. Gut feeling is they may go Harper and T Rogers. Stoinis prides himself on his power hitting in the middle order or later in the order. Dan Lawrences departure will open a spot up for an opener.

Renegades opening could with Fraser McGurk and Tim Siefert. The guys from last year are all gone now (who had an attempt at opening): De Kock, Cox, Finch and SOS. Josh Brown was recruited this season so id imagine maybe Siefert comes in at 3 or 4. Dont know where Bethell bats in this lineup. Bethell like Duckett is also in the English test squad , so Im not really sure if its worth picking him, as he also will likely be in the white ball squad against India.Bethell played in the last T20I for England against West Indies, just not what his job security will be like.

Id imagine the guys on the English squad will want to be home for Christmas.

And I just did my first pre-season change, Kerr OUT, Philippe IN.

I have 3 keepers in my team, all 3 could possibly open......

May have to think about Round 2, given its Adelaide and Perth having doubles, and I dont really have alot of players to cover.

Reasonably happy with that first XI, although having 8 Renegades and Stars in Round 1 double, does seem maybe a tad too many. If i were to bite the bullet probably Kane Richardson would go first.

Until I get bored

WKP: Siefert, (Doran)
BAT: Overton, Fraser-McGurk, F. Allen, Jennings, Brown (Turner, Konstas)
BOWL: Webster, Curran, J Richardson, Stoinis, Zampa (Spoors, Buckingham)
FLEX: Short

May as well start with Short. Trade Siefert for Inglis for Perth's double, trade in a Perth bowler, and trade in Hardie. If Spoors doesn't play round one, I will change him. But pretty much, at least one bench spot in both bat and ball will be a $39,000 player.

Seven players from Stars and Renegades is enough for round 1.

Then round 3 as I'll have 3 stars, I can bring in some Heat and Sixers players when we see who is doing what in those teams.

Feel like there is more upside in bringing in Short in Rd 2 double than Rd 1.

Buckingham feels like a 'cash cow' due to him picking up 2 wickets in the NT North end pre-season tournament grand final. If he gets a game in the earlier rounds. I would imagine with Wes Agar going, that opens up a possible game slot for him.

Ollie Pope is like Duckett and Bethell in the England squad for the test series(14th Dec 2025-18th Dec 2025), which clashes with Adelaides first BBL game on 17th Dec 2025.

Adelaide XI potential in first game: M Short, D Short, Lynn, Weatherald, F Allen, Overton, Nielsen, Bazley, Thornton, Boyce, Buckingham is a potential XI I see. 12th man : A Ross

Depending on if Adelaide want the extra batter, they could swap A Ross for Buckingham. So its worth keeping an eye out on teams. Just regards to Lynn, he missed the last 4 games (2 regular season + 2 finals to the ILT20 last season)

How do people plan on bringing Short in after round 1? He won't drop much, if at all, and you will need to have $100,000 available in your salary cap to get him unless you trade a $160,000 to a sub $70,000 etc. So may as well just spend for him now. He is a keeper and you need him for the double.

I have $50k spare in the balance, so kind of hoping that M Short goes a tad short in Game 1 and a few of my cash cows, solid players increase in value.

If in a weird world a Stoinis went from $84k to say $140k and another player increased in valuation from Rd 1 to Rd 2, id be tempted to offload the Stoin for Short. That would generate $140k+ $50k in the shed, and to do a 2nd/3rd trade to compensate for fitting Short in. I mean whats M Shorts breakeven for Rd 1 is the question. Just think its incredibly high given its Game 1, in Canberra , too many things to suggest he wont crack it.

Worse case scenario is Short goes bonkers in Rd 1.

I have a good mix of Stars/Renegades for round one, and I have a good mix of Adelaide/Perth for round two.

Bold is round one. Italic is round 2

WKT: Siefert, [Harper]

BAT: Fraser-McGurk, Brown, Stoinis, Overton, Inglis [Turner, Bazley]

BOWL: Curran, Khan, Zampa, Siddle, Tye [Spoors, Buckingham]

FLEX: Short

So, assuming Turner is fine for round two, I should have Short, Tye, Spoors, Buckingham, Turner, Bazley, Overton and Inglis.

Planned trades after round 1

This will still be altered but I want to turn Siddle into Allan and Khan into Hardie, so will find extra room in my salary cap to do that without trading out Siefert as I would prefer to have him for the round four double.

In the round thee double I'll have Stoinis and Curran, but need to focus on bringing in Sydney and Heat players. So may not start with someone like Turner etc and have a sixers in there instead. I'll have to use the boost that round.

Still a lot to play out etc.

Renshaw is that cheapie I could start on bench in round one for round three. I could also just play Inglis as WKT round one, forget Seifert and play Walter. That alleviates some pressure for round three to find the players needed.

Renshaw looked good in that last Marsh Cup for QLD as well.
