Not bad, but I think we will persevere with McGovern. For all his weaknesses, he is a decent kick.

Cowan has shown enough to suggest he will become a damaging player, albeit has been a touch disappointing of late.

You may have forgotten about Williams, certainly a best 23 player, when fit. Also, think they will persist with Motts. Fanta

appears to be cooked, but he could prove me wrong.

FB Cowan Weiters Saady

HB McGov SOS Newy

C O Hollands Cripps Acres

R TDK Cerra Walsh

HF Lij Charlie F Young

FF Motts Harry Durds

Inter Hewy Lord Cincotta Cottrell

Sub Williams
I did forget Williams! I would have him in the side with Fogarty the sub.
I'm putting a lot of hope in Raz rekindling his best footy. He was a passenger at best last year but he was looking so good in the preseason and the goal he kicked on the weekend was just all class. His delivery inside 50 is outstanding, a step above our current options so I would love him in the side if that's the version we get.

I've been so disappointed with Gov this season. His best footy is clearly worth his spot but he has made so many conditional efforts this year and seeing him switched to the forward line last game gives me an indication that the coaches are getting frustrated with his lack of output and reliability in defence.

I would definitely hope to see Cowan step up, he was underwhelming in the first month. I think Cincotta offers good versatility though so I wanted to find a spot for him.

Mots just needs a spell at the moment. Have him go back to the 2s and kick 10+ goals in a month before returning. He needs confidence.

Close.

I would take Boyd out, add Ollie to the defenders. I am not massive on current Saad, but probably hangs on in the short term. The wing between Walsh, Smith and Kemp (utility).

Cooper Lord sub at least. I struggle with Cottrell, though his best is very good, and if we are making them all fit Doc certainly in the mix, although Father Time combined with injuries and changing priorities may keep him out. I have more faith in the older Newman and Haynes in the short term.

Agree Gov forward, would not have him in the backline, but has been good since going forward. Kemp could play in any third of the ground and I struggle to leave him out of our best side. Honestly believe wing could be his spot, which leaves room for Gov. If we are gifting the squad with fitness, the Fantasia would have to be in consideration.

Carroll and O’Farrell will be defensive staples soon enough. I like Durds, but he needs a bigger body of work to replace the others. Fog somewhat unlucky, but others are more dynamic.

So what do we think it is going to be next season? Clearly we will have recruits, trades and delistings. I think if everyone was fit we would be going something like this.

Newman Weitering Carroll
Cowan Silvagni Saad
Smith Cripps Walsh
Williams Kemp E Hollands
Moir Curnow Mckay
DeKoning Cerra Hewett
Haynes Lord Acres Cottrell

Reserves: Motlop O Hollands McGovern Pittonet Charleson Wilson B Camporeale L Camporeale Evans F Young O'Farrell O'Keeffe

I actually like that team and would expect it to play finals.

I do want to see the onball group quicker, more capable of chasing and playing a run and carry game, it is still too slow and immobile.

Defence is alright.

I think that forwardline offers a hell of a lot more than what we have rolled out all year.

Smith and Walsh on the wings to me just makes a heap of sence. They have pace, are natural smart footballers. Our wings are poor, Acres has become too slow. Smith and Walsh, IMO they give us heaps. Acres, I think he could move to a utility role. A bit of win, half forward, half back.

The forward line has the right amount of overhead talent and it has pace. In that setup you can get McKay and Curnow high up the ground, move the congestion and give the space out the back to Moir, Kemp etc. I still think there are spots there for an elite small forward or two.

We need to keep striving for better kicking and faster legs in this side. IMO it's good enough to play finals, but the pace and agility in the middle, the ability to run and carry and chase down opposition players is not there to contend for a premiership.

Saad should be nowhere near this team.

I'd like to think our youth will come on and that will be the case, but I am tempering things here.

TDK and Silvagni likely out. So hopefully that means good players in.

It will be interesting to see who comes in. I think the team looks good, it's the onball group which isn't there yet.

Or acres.

And TDK and SOS probably won’t be there either.
Not sure who replaces Acres. Looking for a winger who can find it, is up to the level, can run and kick. It will mean a young player like Wilson or Carroll steps up on a wing or we recruit someone. I'm not sure Ben Camporeale is that player and Lucas is a fair way away. Perhaps Evans or Motlop.

I'll be disappointed immensely if Saad, Silvagni, Curnow, TDK or Acres are in it in round 1 2026.

I think with the realisation that this coaching group have deconstructed what was supposed to be a successful group we need to do a reset and cross our fingers a reset and not a rebuild will work. Personally i think we have close to zero hope of achieving this due to Gold Cast outmatching us each draft 4 to 1 first round players each year. We have missed the boat.

i'm assuming JSoS and TDK gone.

On the off-chance a miracle occurs then its out with Acres, Newman (Docherty lesson) and Saad. Walsh absolutely should play wing as you have him and Hollands should be on the other wing. Kemp and Moir will be busts so we have quite a few spots to spots to fill.

To avoid a dire 2026...
  • Cripps can't play midfield going forward unless the goal is to provide him with a close brownlow top 10 finish. Lord, Cerra and Hewett going forward. We don't have a ruck whose name I want to write down. Aargh!
  • Cant play Young and JSoS is gone. If austin doesnt find some else we are screwed and need to send 300 players running backwards
  • Cant play hit 2 fwds only in the forward line. Must have spread of goal kickers. They have to find a way with Williams and Motlop or we dead.
Actually, in 2026 we are dead and buried based on no qtr backs and no second key defender and all inside mids in the middle and no ruck.

I can see a glimmer of hope for us in 2028 if Austin can get lucky and plug positional holes (not best available).

Silvagni going will leave a hole because of O'Farrell's injury. He's a good CHB. Young is not a great option. Definitely problems there. Deab probably not ready, or will he?

Hollands gives the ball back or puts it back in despute a lot with his unforced errors. The sort we need to be moving away from. Has to be a trade option. Not sure why people think he can play wing, he never finds it there, has minimal impact. He's been shifted to half back, this was one of the reasons.

Curnow is one of the competition's best players. He's been unfit, injured and battling in a poor side and in forward line that puts all the defensive attention on him. You'd be a fool to write him off.

Saad has had a poor season, can he get back to his better footy?

TDK likely gone and so is Silvagni by the sound of it. So those are picks to play with potentially?

Good kicking and pace need to be non-negotiable, that spells a substantial list cleanout. But it can't be done in one season, will take time.

We are reliant on our youth coming on. O'Keeffe, Carroll, Wilson, Charleson, Cowan, Moir. Young players who kick the pace and kicking boxes.

Kemp and Moir will not be busts. Just been poorly coached and used. Moir been a slow burn but has it. Both crucial in our new modelled side and game plan.

We will still carry slow and poor kicks next year, it will take time.

Won't win a flag next year but we can improve and give the 8 a shake if injury gods arent cruel.

Agree gb. I think we’ll be in transition/reset phase over the next 2 or 3 years in terms of the list profile.

Some retiring like Newman, Haynes, McGovern, Saad, Fantasia, Acres. Some defecting TDK, Silvagni. Some delistings also..

Importantly, we need to make the right recruitment calls and bring in players that can move the ball quickly and have good disposal skills… Jagga Smith next year and Cody Walker in 2027 is a good start in this direction.

Even if he doesn’t leave, history suggests he leaves a hole for about 45% of the time anyway.

My memory is that he moved back last year because in the 2nd half we had zero run back there. I think you’re overdoing his disposal, G. He makes mistakes but is usually trying to make something happen and choosing a good option. Unlike many senior players. I’m taking him over Saad, Acres, Boyd, Binns every day of the week.

Not writing off Curnow. Happy to see him move at the right price.

Saad? Personally I don’t think so.

Guessing ~7 and ~25, then we’ll have to make sure we’re appropriately equipped for Dean & Ison (& Walker next year). So us finishing below StK probably determines if we can take a pick before Harry. what trade options present themselves, given Voss and all that, will also affect what we take to the draft.

To be honest, all of them have been poorly coached and almost all poorly used.
