So instead of the Eagles seeing pick 13 turn into pick 11 they're going to force Carlton to trade picks away so 13 stays exactly where it is.

I'm not sure I understand the logic. The Eagles are a strange lot.

They aren’t forcing Carl to do anything though

They likely get the same player at 13 anyway it’s so even

Did they bid on daicos or the Ashcroft brothers ? If they had a chance?

There have been bids at #1, but to do it, the player has to be the clear standout at the time of the draft

Clubs don't want to give up the attention the #1 pick gets, except where by not bidding on another player they're just going to look stupid/delusion.

It’s the attention it’s the $10,000 prize money.
Way to get your number 1 draft pick offside by costing him 10 grand before his first day

Can anyone explain what West Coast was thinking today? I don't understand what West Coast did today with their bidding. If their aim was to get Beau Addinsall off the Gold Coast why didn't they bid on Dylan Patterson? Thats around 400-500 points that GC didn't have to find. Why did they bid on Dean? It resulted in our first two picks getting used by North and Essendon instead of being absorbed into a bid, which in turn meant their third pick lost about 100 points in value. With back to back bids that around 200 points in value that Gold Coast didn't have to match.

I have no idea what the strategy was supposed to be.

And had they thrown in f2 with 13 they could have had our 9 (with other peripheral picks). Move up 4 instead of 1

West Coast bid on Dean because they wanted to draft Dean ;)

West coast bid on Dean because they needed to fill a need down back, and then spend their next 2 selections not filling that need - makes perfect sense. A bid for spite, and spite alone if you ask anyone.
Maybe they didnt rate any other backman as highly as Dean.

Carlton have bid to buy themselves time to trade before, at least you knew it was coming.

Why would Carlton not trade the picks out for more points to match if the bid is later? Would you rather pay more or less?

If the bid was a few picks later Carlton could've absorbed the bid using the two firsts and got a pick in the late first round.

You could have but why would you when you can trade for more points at the bid for a better result?

The AFL have not closed the loophole so Carlton would be negligent not to use it.

It’s like going to Disneyland and everything is full price but if you swap your $100 dollars for $100 Mickey bucks, you get 20 percent off.

How is a bunch a picks in the 20s we wont use better than a second first round pick?

Carlton are only taking three players: Dean, Ison and hopefully pick 27. It would've been Dean, Ison and pick 18 or 19 if Dean was bid on later in the top 10.

Harry Dean is the highest drafted key position defender since Jacob Weitering.. No idea what was behind the Eagles bidding on him so high but find it quite bizarre.

So no consideration that we may have actually rated him that highly?

Nah zero... Prior to the leaks that Cal Thomey got around WCE bidding on Dean, not a single draft expert had him rated in the top 8, key defenders unless they are exceptional like Weitering have historically never been top 5 picks, even Dan Curtin who was spruiked far more than Dean, wasnt picked until pick 8.

Maybe we thought Dean was a perfect McGovern replacement and that nobody else around fit the bill?

This isn't true at all.
McGowan at The Age and Waterworth at Fox Footy both had him higher than 8.

The Eagles are known for not leaking stuff in general, until very close to the draft.

Im sure other clubs are in the same boat, Tigers may have rated Dean that highly too and Cal had no idea wat they were doing, he got them wrong altogether in his top 10.

You are just assuming based off months old information, id have been fine taking Dean at 3 tbh

More than likely, and our KPD stocks arent that crash hot.
We probably need 1 very good or elite KPD to complement what we have which are some pretty average KPDs

Would be hard to find a replacement for the best KDP of the last 20 years, arguably the best ever KPD in Gov who was so crucial to how we structure the ground in a rookie draft or with later picks anymore

I would think with Gibney leading your defence, its probably the least of your concerns. Getting midfielders that can help Harley should be priority 1,2 & 3.

Nah we need other roles.

Our midfield isnt as dire as some make out, its just incredibly young
