I really like the way Rowell plays.

He's not just get 30 possies and you're happy.

He works his butt off and does a lot of things at a high level.
He can also go ballistic with any stat as well.

Top 30 for possessions. Highest 37.
Top 3 in tackles. Highest 17.
Top 9 inside 50s. Highest 11.
Top 3 contested possessions. Highest 23.
Top 30 effective disposals. Highest 25.
Top 3 clearances. Highest 15.
Top 40 metres gained. Highest 730 metres.
Top 9 scoring involvements. Highest 14.

Even though the voting was suss, he's a deserved winner.

I don't there is a player who is top 10 in tackles, contested possessions and scoring involvements. A heady mix.

Just accept it for what it is and enjoy the hilarity of it.

2nd in tackles, 1st in clearances, 6th in inside 50s for the year. The guy is a superstar

arguably not even the best mid on his team, so I don’t see how he’s top 5 unless the rest of the league only has 3 of the top 5 mids between them.

This is actually not quite as crazy as it sounds. Name the 4 mids that are clearly better than Rowell & Anderson. Its harder than you'd expect.

Half the current umpiring fraternity can’t correctly adjudicate how far 15 metres is, yet we give them the power to determine who the games B & F player is. I find the whole event to be quite farcical.

Any event with Hamish MaCl doing interviews is farcical. Can you think of a more superior, holier than thou, self entitled w***er?
Turned off after what should have been a 4-5 minute interview with Rowell was turned into an epic of Quo Vadis proportions.

Just to follow on (got interrupted).

An old fashioned, socks down, no nonsense, bull at a gate, tackling machine. Never flustered when the oppo try to get physical with him. Just bores back in and gets into the next contest.

Has increased his endurance and gets to so many contests these days. Also added an outside perspective to his basic game now as well.

Only wished for the past two years that he played for us

My pre count tips were:
1. N Daicos
2. Dawson
3. Rowell
4. Smith
5. Anderson + Serong + NWM.

Astonished that Brayshaw got that many votes. Solid, accumulator, but not many eye catching traits I would have thought.

What I like is he's unfazed by big moments, on and off the field. No histrionics nor "look at me" type show pony playing to the crowd and carrying on either.

I mean NWM had 34 and 4, including 2 goals in the last 2 minutes that won them the game in one of the most remarkable performances ever.

It's literally the easiest 3 votes you could possibly give. The Brownlow is a meme award now.

He kicked two of those goals in the last 10 seconds of the game.

He wracked up a lot of cheap possessions with little impact in the first three quarters of the game, as the Saints trailed by 8 goals. The Dees had multiple forward 50 entries in the last where they simply threw away easy scores.

He misses that last kick, or Melbourne don't fall lose concentration for a couple of seconds and the discussion would be why didn't NWM and St Kilda play like that for the entire game.

At least the umpires didn't give him votes for the 36 and 2 goals he kicked against Geelong the previous week. Where Scott didn't even bother moving Mullin onto him.

I'm not an footy umpire, but I use to referee soccer. Refereeing requires paying attention to so many aspects of the play. But the identity of the players involved in the play is well down on the list of things I'm paying attention to and almost incidental (other than which team they belong), unless there is a foul or infringement.

13 years in a row the winner has been top 5 in contested possessions AND top 5 in clearances.

Rowell, Tom Green and Serong all fit that bill this year and all polled well too.

It’s a very predictive award now.

A lot of people had him around 8-12 votes and he polled 21.

Had 0 games over 30 touches. Wasn’t high contested possies or clearances which is what the usual predictor is.

Did have 5 games of 20+ disposals and 2+ goals but wow he was the biggest over polled by a mile for mine.

Will be one to watch in future years with his breakaway speed and bald head obviously catching a heap of attention.

He was probably our most consistent player but i suppose he went okay considering injury towards the end.
