The surprise was the Jamie Cooper's painting of the top 25 dogs which is exceptional in the details and probably well worth a print. It is about 3m by 1m.

We were up on table 108 which was somewhere near Station Pier in Port Melbourne in the throng of 1300. Food was decent, beers and wine flowed however it is a long night with scant regards to the vote counts.
If someone could translate bevvos ramblings, that would be great.

Doc won the night and the love for him shows no bounds. Libba and Ed, equal second. Great to see Peter Welsh and Simon Beasley and all the fans enjoying themselves.

Go Dogs

I think Easton Wood should be on that painting... right next to Bob. I don't know who over though
Agreed however I don't know the criteria and how do you look at a player in the 1930's compared to a recent. Other than that it is pure bliss, especially KT, the poem, the brand new boots for Libba and the brown overcoat in Ted's locker.

McNeil ranked 69th for pressure acts amongst 85 small forwards this year(min 10 games). Ranked 75th for tackles
What are his stats on blocking exits and covering the ground he’s supposed to cover? Do you form all of your opinions based off numbers like that?

I didn’t call Lachie one of the best pressure forwards in the AFL. I just have the common sense to see that for him to be as crap as he is and as well liked by the coaches he is performing a structural function. I have alluded to that not being enough to play him in the side going forward.

He may very well have photos of the coaches and may well not be in the side for any reason at all. I think that’s pretty implausible and your s&:) stats haven’t quite swayed me to believe it.

Yeah generally if a player isn’t passing the eye test I look to some statistics to try and see if I’m missing something. If he’s covering ground and blocking exits I would expect to see some intercept possessions or spoils but we don’t see any of those. He might just be that good at his defensive work that the opposition is too scared to kick it to that side

I actually thought he was pretty decent in 2024, poor disposal undid his good work a lot of the time but thought he was noticeable and deserved his spot at the end of the season. I think if he finished his work he’d have gotten a lot more recognition

He doesn’t have photos of the coach but history has shown that Bevo has blinkers on for battlers who are good teammates and hard trainers and will keep selecting them even if providing zero or negative impact

You know what I think you’re actually right. There’s no real statistical case for McNeil being effective defensively. He definitely runs hard (which was my initial comment) but the effect he has can’t be great can it. I’d be surprised if he was ever really the cause of our defensive issues but that’s the nicest thing I can really say.

Thank bloody goodness Arty, Dolan and hopefully Cody will be fit and firing next year. All so much more talented.

Regarding the eye test, it’s definitely where I find my reasons to criticise Sanders. He gets tentative at times, loses his man and doesn’t stick his tackles well enough. I do think he sometimes hurts us defensively which is the crux of my lack of surprise he was low in the bnf. It would frustrate the coaches.

He shows plenty with ball in hand and had stints this year where it seemed he was addressing his shortcomings. I think he’ll be a decent afl player.

I’m with you on Sanders and the eye test. Think he looks good in congestion but I’m worried about his tentativeness in open space and refusal to kick the ball, and I’m not sure he offers too much off the ball either. Up to the middle of the season I thought he was really improving and getting more confident but seemed to regress later in the season and I’m not surprised he finished low in the B+F and was out of the side for the last round

Long term I think he’ll be fine if he can nail down a midfield spot, he is very clean in tight. Not sure if there is enough in his game to make it as a half forward or wing in the meantime. But he is still very young and has time on his side to improve and be a useful contributor. He had kicked a goal a game for the first 10 weeks which was something I didn’t think he’d have in his game

Anyways, sorry for diverting the thread away from the CSM and back to list management
