I just noticed the Demons numbers. How long ago was their figure updated? That’s an alarming drop.

New all-time AFL club membership record set

One in 21 Australians is a member of an AFL club, with the AFL today announcing a new all-time AFL club membership record of 1,324,504 members* (year to date).

The 1,324,504 figure surpasses the previous record of 1,319,687 members set in 2024, and represents an increase of 2.8 per cent compared to the same time last year.

The cut-off for 2025 membership is August 31, with the AFL and clubs to announce total and final numbers in September.

So far, nine clubs – the Brisbane Lions, GWS GIANTS, Gold Coast SUNS, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda, the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs – have broken their all-time membership record this year.

Fifteen of the eighteen clubs are also on track to surpass their 2024 membership tallies.

With less than a week to go until the milestone 10th NAB AFLW season begins, AFLW club membership has already passed 62,000 – a six per cent increase on the year-to-date figure for 2024.

“On behalf of the AFL, I’d like to thank the more than 1.32 million members who have shown their support for their AFL clubs this year and contributed to this new record,” AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said.

“The passion and dedication of members and fans, as well as the incredible job clubs do to bring more people into footy each year, are the reason our game continues to thrive.

“With plenty of exciting footy still to be played over the final three rounds of the home and away season, the finals race sharpening and the NAB AFLW Season kicking off next week, it’s a great time to be a part of our game.”

Last week, the AFL launched Thank You Month to celebrate and reward members and fans for their ongoing support.

As part of the league-wide celebration of members and fans, a range of rewards and surprises are available across AFL and AFLW matches in August.

The AFL says Nine clubs have broken records – the Brisbane Lions, GWS GIANTS, Gold Coast SUNS, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda, the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs- but Sportsindustry understands that Fremantle was left off the AFLs published list of record breakers, pushing that figure into double digits. We still lack any data for Adelaide, but the missing data from our graph is in line with what Adelaides expected membership should be.

SUNS break all-time membership record

A historic year for the Gold Coast SUNS has reached new heights with the club eclipsing 30,000 members for the first time.

As the SUNS prepare for Saturday’s Elimination Final against Fremantle, the club is pleased to announce it will set a new membership record for a sixth consecutive season, surpassing the previous record of 26,157 members in 2024.

The Gold Coast is supporting its AFL team like never before with anticipation and excitement at fever pitch following a club-record 15 AFL wins in 2025, and qualification for the SUNS’ first ever Toyota AFL Finals Series.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO Mark Evans says the support from the community has been incredible throughout a history-making year.

“At the beginning of such a big week for the Gold Coast SUNS and the Gold Coast community, it’s fantastic that we are able to announce we have reached 30,000 members for the first time,” Evans said.

“The SUNS were the first sporting franchise on the Gold Coast to reach 20,000 members, and to now become the first to reach 30,000 members is a terrific achievement for our club.

“Our purpose as an organisation is to inspire the community to be part of our extraordinary journey, and it’s wonderful to now be heading into our first AFL Finals Series with record numbers supporting our club. Our members have been fearless in their support this year and we believe the best is yet to come.”

It is the sixth consecutive season in which the SUNS have set a new membership benchmark, with membership numbers growing by almost 100% in that time period.

The announcement aligns with unprecedented community football participation in Queensland this year, with the state on track to achieve another participation record.
