2025 Club Membership Updates

Brisbane has shot up almost 50k in 6 years. Their figures are easily the most impressive in the league considering we're capped at a much smaller stadium. I feel like if we sustain our form all the way to the new stadium, we would undoubtedly be considered one of the top clubs in the league. We have the biggest advantage over any other club, being that we have the whole city to ourselves. Eagles have to share with Fremantle, and port the same with the crows. The same goes for every other club in the league. The only team i feel could rival us in the future (besides the big 4 vic clubs and the eagles and crows) is Sydney. However, they need a new stadium, because we're on pace to surpass them in the next year or so.

Some clubs like WC, Brisbane, adelaide there is nowhere for their crowds to go as they have maxed out the capacity

Whilst that’s somewhat true, that’s the not the case for the Victorian clubs, GWS, the Gold Coast and even Sydney and Port.

If you look at the the last four years, the membership numbers are so far disconnected from actual bums in seats.

From 2023 to 2025 (first year of Gather Round)

2023 home and away and home game attendance vs 2025

Hawthorn 33.7% increase in crowds (28.2% increase at home)

North Melb 16% increase in crowds (25.8% increase at home)

Gold Coast 12.4% increase in crowds (14.17% increase at home)

Adelaide 12.22% increase in crowds (5.2% increase at home)

Brisbane 8.45% increase in crowds (5.78% increase at home)

GWS Giants 8.39% increase in crowds (8.49% increase at home)

Geelong 4.4% increase in crowds (3.8% increase at home)

Fremantle 3.2% increase in crowds (1.8% increase at home)

W Bulldogs 3% increase in crowds (20% increase at home)

Collingwood 0.005% drop in crowds (5% increase at home)

Sydney 0.6% drop in crowds (4.4% increase at home)

West Coast 1% drop in crowds (7% increase at home)

Carlton 2.82% drop in crowds (2.9% increase at home)

St Kilda 3.83% drop in crowds (1.7% drop at home)

Melbourne 6.8% drop in crowds (8.5% drop at home)

Port Adelaide 6.96% drop in crowds (3.8% drop at home)

Essendon 6.96% drop in crowds (19.6% drop at home)

Richmond 15.9% drop in crowds (18% drop at home)

Compared to membership change 2023 vs 2025

Brisbane increase by 37.38%

Gold Coast increase by 28.88%

Adelaide increase by 18.2%

Sydney increase by 17.32%

W Bulldogs increase by 16.48%

Geelong increase by 14.44%

GWS increase by 14.13%

Port Adelaide increase by 13.4%

North Melbourne increase by 10.17%

St Kilda increase by 8.74%

Hawthorn increase by 8.06%

Fremantle increase by 6.66%

Carlton increase by 5.73%

Collingwood increase by 5.65%

West Coast increase by 3.68%

Essendon dropped by 0.9%

Richmond dropped by 9.88%

Melbourne dropped by 17.3%

If you go back to 2022 it’s even more pronounced. Brisbane is up 74%, Sydney is 38.22%, Port is up 28.82% and Geelong is up 28.37%.

And that’s despite all those clubs drawing roughly the same number of bums on seats to games over a four year period (give or take 10-15%). The growth is great but the value of what a club membership once meant is lost.

Steady. Brisbane’s numbers are impressive but the number itself is completely disconnected from support.

Despite Brisbane’s 75,000 members the Lions still had tickets at the gate for 5 or 6 Gabba games this year - and that’s despite the 35,000 capacity.

At a time when its membership shot up 74 per cent its Gabba attendances have climbed from 25,818 (in 2022) to 30,598 (this year) and were 27,455 and 29,045 in 2023 and 2024. That is roughly in line (and actually a little behind) what they were drawing in 2006 to 2010 (28,630, 28,848, 29,172, 29,933) when they had a third of members.

So what has changed between 2010 and 2025 (?). Lots. We now have AFLW, one, two and three game memberships, non match day access, internet membership and more. This isn’t a knock on Brisbane, all clubs do it, but that’s the reason why lots of clubs (especially those in expansion markets) have all spiked 30 to 70 per cent over the last 4 years.

It’s a pretty clever strategy but you can’t say a member in 2015 is the same as 2025 they are vastly different things. These days it’s cheaper to become a one game member then it is to buy a ticket to a single match.

I’ve often wondered what happened in 1987 to the membership tallies…. It was the year that the Bears and Eagles came into the comp but all the big 4 clubs went backwards about an average of 4,000 members each which was massive at the time. And Richmond had the smallest Victorian membership…??? something never looked right to me.

1987 was the year that Channel 7 had the dispute with the VFL and didn’t broadcast the football. It was also in and around a major recession. The Dogs were the worst hit, they went from 8,500 members in 1986 to less than 3,500 in 1987.

That said club membership really wasn’t a thing until the mid to late 90s. Neither was home games, most supporters just went to every game home or away which is why Richmond and Melbourne used to get massive crowds to home and away games in the 60s and 70s.

Although it’s interesting to note that Footscray was pretty big club from 1925 right till the mid ‘80s. Their membership and crowds really dropped off from that mid 80s period (thanks to gentrification) which set the wheels in motion for the 1989 merger. Which is probably why we think of them as a smaller club now. If Bigfooty was around in 1945, 1955 or 1965 they’d probably be in the same conversation as Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and Geelong for following.

I’ve aways thought of the Dogs as being the Port Adelaide of the early VFL. They were easily the strongest 1925 expansion club and had a membership and crowds to compete with the foundation clubs from the get go.

Members make it a momentous season!

The AFL is delighted to announce a new AFLW club membership record for the second consecutive year, thanks to the support and passion of footy fans across the country.

The new record tally of 84,644 AFLW club members has resulted in a nearly 11 per cent growth from last season and eclipses the previous total of 76,356 set in 2024.

Across the league, twelve clubs set new membership records including this week’s NAB AFLW Grand Finalists the North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos and the Brisbane Lions, as well as Fremantle, Geelong Cats, GWS GIANTS, Gold Coast SUNS, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast.

Under new captain Ruby Schleicher and boasting 2024 number one draft pick Ash Centra, Collingwood also saw a membership increase year-on-year while nine clubs saw more than 10 per cent growth this season in their membership tallies.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon thanked footy fans for their support in the milestone 10th season.

“On behalf of the AFL I would like to thank our fans who have supported their team this year and become an AFLW member – you have set this new record and it’s another remarkable milestone to celebrate in the 10th season of the competition,” Dillon said.

“Our clubs do an incredible job instilling fans with pride and passion for their jumper – as well as drive a one club two team culture – and that’s reflected in 12 clubs breaking their own AFLW membership record.

“The NAB AFLW Competition this year has gone from strength to strength. From the open, free flowing, attacking footy on the field, to record high scores and disposals as well as huge crowds at Henson Park and across our Indigenous and Pride Rounds, there has been growth in many areas throughout the league.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday and seeing either North become the first AFLW team to win back-to-back flags or Brisbane becoming the first club to win the AFL and AFLW premierships in the same year.”

The AFLW club membership record follows the announcement in September that the AFL broke its all-time club membership record with 1,363,437 fans a member of an AFL club – the equivalent of one in 20 Australians.
