I've had a crack at a Phantom for tomorrow nights draft. I have actually done two! The way I view things the first 3 picks are pretty well set, with the rest of the draft hinging on who Carlton picks at 4. In both scenarios I have us picking a medium defender and a small forward.

1. West Coast Tom McCarthy
2. North Melbourne Archer May
3. Port Adelaide Ewan MacKinley
4. Carlton Michael Sellwood
5. Western Bulldogs Zac Banch
6. Essendon Oliver Eastland
7. Gold Coast Rod Ali
8. Collingwood Josh Browne
9. West Coast Milan Murdock
10. North Melbourne Cooper Trembath

13. Essendon Riley Mason
14. Gold Coast Caleb Lewis
15. Collingwood Charlie McCartin
16. Port Adelaide Harrison Ramm

B

Sellwood and Banch would be absolute best case for me.Nice one. A lot will depend on what Port do it seems, sounds like they have strong interest in both Sellwood/McKinley. Carlton are very keen on Newton and Toner by reports so we should be able to land one of the above.
I'm predicting we'll end up with Sellwood and Banch.
Fun fact: Zac Walker is a big Dogs fan. Whole family are BulldogsA

Might go through to the 'keeper in many cases, DW, you old codger...Nice work.
I particularly like phantom A where you have us getting two Zacs. Sammy Power should get his bob's worth out of that.

Not that I disagree but you could replace the name with Kelsey Rypstra and your post would have been equally valid.Would prefer Massimo Raso out of all the small forwards ive seen us linked with. Seems a genuine crumber and very clean hands. Can always use that at the feet of Darcy and Naughton. Might take a few years still but see traits. Can get away with not having elite speed with those traits.
Rypstra's biggest issue was his body though. His body just didn't want him to play AFL.Not that I disagree but you could replace the name with Kelsey Rypstra and your post would have been equally valid.
I'm not too fussed about positional elements, especially in part because our team is so strong that if we're expecting the MSD pick to play in the AFL team (even if we have an injury crisis in such a position), something has gone wrong for the rest of the season.
On the other hand, even if the player only has a six month contract, get in the biggest upside talent, and see if they improve in a full-time setup with greater resources IMO.
Theres a lot more willingness to take a punt on players in MSD due to the fact they are outside main list and can be gone in 6 months like Rypstra was for us. I don't expect us to pick for the now but even with flea back in the team, we are still short of small forward depth. Arty Jones more high half forward. Same goes for Garcia. Not that I disagree but you could replace the name with Kelsey Rypstra and your post would have been equally valid.

Voss from Frankston is the only other small defender mentionedAgree with others that I would love a small defender but there doesn't seem to be any decent ones around this MSD. Any names?

West our only genuine crumber, Vandermeer has become more lead up and I cant even tell you was Mcneil is, a poor mans tory dickson? He has had a good year by his standards but we can definitely use some more competition in the long term for that genuine forward 50 crumber role which is so important with a tall forwardline. I like Massimo Raso as he seems he could genuinely make it in that role.
I feel like we have started to target role players with later picks as opposed to trying to find elite talent. Every team needs them, we have lacked them for a good few years and have suffered. Emergence of depth players this year as big an influence on our reliability each week as anything else.

I've seen Zero Hanger mention Donovan Toohey from CoburgVoss from Frankston is the only other small defender mentioned

I appreciate all the posts from the keen talent watchers here. However I’m also geared up for the possibility of a “WTF?”selection because clubs (including ours) sometimes try to hide their interest in a player, especially a smoky that perhaps no other club has noticed. Especially in a rookie draft or a MSD.
Or maybe one or two clubs have indeed become aware of the smoky but if they think nobody else is interested they might choose to let him slide to their second or third pick. And then we pounce.
If we publicly demonstrate/leak keen interest in some obvious choices like Raso, Sellwood, McKinlay etc that might also deflect attention from our other targets. (From memory we got under Essendons guard like that with Tory Dickson. They were mightily pissed off.)
Anyway let’s see what happens. I’m hoping for Sellwood and one of the small forwards.
I think it's a fair chance. As others have noted it will depend on whether our target players are still there.I’m not prepared to rule out that we freed up a second spot and still don’t take anyone!

Yes it runs a lot quicker then the national draftDoes the MSD usually run quickly as opposed to the normal draft night, when clubs still take 5 minutes to take even the most obvious number 1 pick?
