Whilst I agree...I wonder if the Suns would consider how much extra in their salary cap pick 6 is worth?

ie. The Bulldogs pay all of Marra's salary for next year and trade him and a second-round pick to the Suns for pick 6. Therefore, the Suns get JUH to play for them with no cost to their salary cap. That puts the value of pick 6 at, what, $500k and a second round pick?

and we give Port pick 6 and next year's second for Butters

That's where I'm heading with this. Correct. The tricky part is figuring out what pick 6 is worth to the Suns and to us and how to swap assets to get a deal both parties like.

We will need draft capital to pay for Butters if something was to happen this year.

It would be 6 and next year’s first.
I think the value of Butters is 2 or 3 first-round picks, depending upon how good the picks are. Pick 6 is pretty tasty....

Posted this in the Jamarra thread, I think 13 for 28 would be the highest we could hope for and that would be us covering all of his wage.

If that were the case and a deal was to go ahead I'd say it'd be closer to;

Dogs In : Butters, Budarick, 56, 60
Dogs out: 10 Jamarra, 28, F1

Suns in: Jamarra, 28
Suns out: Budarick, 13, 56

Port out: Butters, 60
Port in: 10, 13, F1

I guess its up to Port and what they'd prefer/ what Suns would give, for us it makes no difference.

Edit to add: personally I'd prefer 10 and 13 over 6 if I were the Power as I view that period of the draft very evenly.
I think Suns would also prefer to keep 6 to use in a pick only trade to gain points, it'll net them more suitors especially once the DeKoning compo comes in.

I think there is more chance the Suns get Marra for nothing then there is of pick 6 being involved.
The benefit to us is that we haven't got a $750,000 dead weight in our salary cap, and the idea that we'd get something more than that is nothing but a dream.

We're talking about a player who hasn't trained for a year. Even if he gets his act together (and that's a big if), there's no guarantee he'll perform anywhere near like he has on the field simply by virtue of not training.

butters would be great but we really need a key defender. Cant go into next year with the same set up
But it would be of so Bevo to decide - "We need to bolster our defence... better get in another A-grade mid."

If we eliminate all $800k of Marra's salary, then I agree that we shouldn't expect much, if any, compensation from the club he joins. What if JUH wants his $800k next season, though? Whose going to pay him that next year (except us, who are obliged to do so at present)?

If we pay JUH's salary next year, then we will not allow him to go to the Suns without any compensation.

Perhaps we could split the $800k cost between ourselves and the Suns...but that doesn't give us the big salary cap relief we are after.

It'll either be one or the other no in-between I don't think. The only way we will get a pick upgrade is covering close to if not all of the cost, no point covering some and getting nothing in return.

I agree.

AFL has officially given the Eagles an extra first rounder. Anticipated, but I don't think it was official before now.

At least it's end of first round, not straight after their #1 pick.
Four extra rookie spots too.

What a joke. One of the richest teams in the comp with a flag recently.
If they become successful at any point in 10 years from now this will be forgotten, just like how the last two premiers and two teams that played off in a semi-final this year got to their position from being handed extras too.

Unless our deal is one that they cannot match financially. Wonder if heavily front loading a deal will price them out? If the first year is north of 1.5 million.
Pretty sure they average the contract out over total length, so front loading won't price Port out. Plus I'd imagine they'd have cap space anyway.

Yeah but can you still do a shorter contract on big money with a wink-wink we’ll extend it later? I think the compensation formula now looks at the total value of the deal, not just the average cost to stop the collusion like with Daniher, but suspect we could still do it to make it hard for Port to match.
