C4 saying we will draft Oskar Ainsworth. Draft watchers can you tell us much about him ?

Just going to put a little disclaimer that nothing is guaranteed, but Im judging by all of the extra work going into him this late in the piece (the club meeting with his teachers, friends, coaches) as a sign that things are firming.

This is my final ever Phantom draft.
In the real thing I image there are lots of pick trades, including by us however for the purposes of this draft I left hypothetical trades out. I took alot of NGA & F/S as final selection because of this when they could likey go as rookies. Carlton go into slight deficit and Suns go into a larger deficit but again this is due to no live trading.
Come draft night i fully expect us to trade out 33 to Blues, Suns or Saints (post Fincher bid).

Good job. I think there will be quite a few surprises.

In the big footy phantom I somehow ended up with Dovaston and Oskar Taylor. Even had Thredgold available to me and I even surprised myself that I didn't take him

Probably means that we think that Darcy might get bidded on somewhere in the 30's or very early 40's. Only thing that makes any sense with trading for that pick.
I think we traded for the pick to give us flexibility on the night and because we can take in 5 picks. Gives us a bit of an upper hand when clubs are tight on picks they can carry into the draft for bid matching purposes.
The two options I see as plausible is 33 to the Suns for Melbourne's F2
Or to the Lions for F2 and FF3.

Edit to add: I'd be extremely shocked if Darcy gets a bid.

Rather use all picks available to us and not trade into next year.
We can't though? Unless we draft Darcy without a bid. If we take a player at 14, 33, and 53 then upgrade JOD and Baker with 70 and 74 we will have no list spaces for Darcy as a Rookie.

That is because there is a fallacy that there is little talent in this draft. We'd probably end up looking stupid if we did that.

Especially when there is no guarantee of Butters at all.
I don't think there is plenty of talent in this draft albeit more low floor/high ceiling types then usual so it will really show who the best recruiters are. Even if Butters doesn’t eventually early indications are very promising for next year's draft if we couldn't find another target to spend the capital on. I also think given the amount of young developing talent we have on our list we could do with picking up a couple 19+ year olds who will be closer to consistent performances and more likely to impact our Bont years should they be required.
It's a Moot point anyway as we will be keeping a presence in the one of the first or second rounds anyway.

There is enough there for both 14 and 33

Ainsworth would definitely add to the versatility of our next wave of midfielders. Having both Hynes & Ainsworth being able to rotate between forward/mid & be a goal-kicking threat, gives us a more dynamic look.

Makes sense trading out the 33 into next year if he’s our man. Not much talk of him on any of the phantoms/power rankings

How about downgrading and trading into next year, not necessarily for Butters picks but perhaps El Souki or just others in general.

Maybe I’m reading the modern trends wrong but the half forwards don’t seem to be as important in today’s game as run off half back and I’d really love for us to be able to get back to that.
There’s a game where we go end to end and kick a goal within, beautiful
It was Lindsay Gilbee
Maybe it’s just my nostalgic bias for half backs though like Gilbee

Not going to lie, very disappointing if true re Ainsworth. There’s some real talent in our range I hope we don’t piss it up the wall

Certainly not how the half forwards used to operate. Now its much more about the guys who can get up and back around the wing whilst still being a threat forward of centre. Like Davidson and the Nairn types

I get the feeling but I’ve lived through enough drafts to not get caught up in picks at this point in their careers. I mean we really haven’t had a genuinely poor draft in close to decade.

We have to trust the recruiters until there’s a reason not to.

2020 the only one that stands out in recent memory but not many faired well. That draft can be over looked due to Covid.

Also from memory, didnt one of our recruiters Luke Williams, mention Ainsworth was “one to watch” or something along those lines earlier in the year.

So makes sense we’re into him. He has played some big games, kicking 5 goals on a few occasions with 20+ touches & good clearance numbers, showing his impact in both positions.

I can see the appeal.
