I think we traded for the pick to give us flexibility on the night and because we can take in 5 picks. Gives us a bit of an upper hand when clubs are tight on picks they can carry into the draft for bid matching purposes.
The two options I see as plausible is 33 to the Suns for Melbourne's F2
Or to the Lions for F2 and FF3.
Edit to add: I'd be extremely shocked if Darcy gets a bid.
Correct the acquisition of pick 53 was about gaining greater flexibility. Since a future fourth-round pick holds little value, we saw pick 53 as an opportunity especially with the number of academy selections expected to push picks up the order that pick 53 could effectively become closer to pick 48.
When Gold Coast have two of their academy players bid on, they’ll likely only have picks around 48, 49, and 50 left for their third academy player. Depending on where that third player is bid on, they might even need to go into a deficit.
Meaning we might also place a bid on that player ourselves, as we rate him in that tier. If Gold Coast do match the bid, it would push our pick up further, potentially improving its value. From there, we could trade it for stronger draft capital or a future pick to enhance our overall draft position
