Carmichael has traits that not many have in a weak draft - he actually knows how to read the play to get in the right positions in the defensive half to be an outlet/transition player. (The top 20 have ridiculously low average disposals for whatever level of footy they were playing at compared to most years).

That reading of the play also has great vision/memory. He doesn't have to be a meerkat to figure out/understand his options. He is always assessing his options at all time, his concentration/vision is good. In his play this year he's take one "safe" option that he knew he had as an outlet after assessing (and not taking) central/attacking options.

List balance depth - given that we drafted Athletic types in the MSD and we had Buss take kick ins in the VFL, we need his style of player just to have some balanced options to push for AFL, in the VFL.

That's the strengths. There's going to be plenty of weaknesses for a player avaliable at 21 in a weak draft.

Firstly to play his outlet role at AFL level you need to be a high stamina, great runner - constantly motoring to be at every defensive contest and continue to be a disposal option. I don't think running is a weakness but not necessarily a strength.

Athletic downside - "merely" 183cm, not great straight line speed. Good but not great agility.

Softness - hardly proved he could lay good tackles, panics a bit through physical contact (even if he was good in non-physical traffic).

Positional flexibility - I doubt he can play any position other than outlet small defender at AFL level, whereas for most draft picks you can see at least the theory of the different positions they may play.

I think this is what they mean by he may seem vanilla when it comes to champion data numbers etc but what it doesn’t show is his levels of competitiveness and his high football IQ which we clearly rate highly

They have a lot of picks next year for Butters options. I would have liked them getting Merrett. I’m a little worried.

The accumulating of picks will be irrelevant in the end for the Butters chase, whether that is us, Hawks or Cats stocking up. Will just come down to which club he nominates and then from there, getting the deal done which with our future picks we shouldn't have any issues doing.

We haven't had too many links with Thredgold from what i've seen. Doesn't mean we wouldn't take him, but feel like the pick tomorrow will be Emmett which is pretty exciting if so.

Edit * Think Kras would be next if Roos went Emmett, i'm tipping it's one of those two.

I’m more than happy with Carmichael, despite not watching any of him, I’m sure he’ll end being better than Oskar Taylor & Lindsay because I trust the club.

But that Suns trade was diabolical.

Carmichael is a speculative pick with no obvious AFL traits. At Junior level he is - as they say both neat and consistent it's anyone's guess how that plays at AFL level. Most clubs would say we've reached here - our recruiters are seeing something most others can't.

There are others left on the table who possess more compelling attributes. Personally, I would prefer a safe vanilla pick for a key defender. I'm not sure safe and vanilla is what you pick for the half back rebounder. To his credit Lachy does show midfield craft and poise in traffic, is team oriented, tackles ok, decent length kick and a neat pass. Unless, he has some hidden super power - and he might - he will take a few years to find his feet and build the necessary muscle before his attributes reach AFL level.

But who knows, he might become the next Corey Enright

I’m not sure an 18 year old kpd is ever safe and vanilla.

He would be but they take so long to be ready. We already drafted Buss who is a work in progress plus I assume Darcy.
I'd say that Thredgold is about where Buss is right now in terms of physical build, he is a damn big unit.
Could see him playing a handful of games next year if we drafted him.

Will Darcy is our project KPD. Doubt we’d pick up another. Another ruck with KPP potential better suited if we go tall (Emmett / Kras)

Only thing I can think of is that given the pick was a bit of a reach/bolter I do wonder if we could have traded down that pick 3-5 spots, still taken him, and gotten some sort of marginal benefit with other picks (trading in a 2027 2nd rounder for a 2026 3rd rounder or whatever).

Emmett, Thredgold, NHH, Phillipou, Onley, Kras.

Our main options for our next?
Cal linked us to Sam Allen in his late mail thing.

Id be happy with any of Sam Allen, Thredgold, Emmett, NHH.

They all have Elite traits.

Onley dodgey kick and Kras didnt impress me at all in that craft of the draft interview.

To highlight how weak of a draft it is, in both of their draft years I have Harry Dean (pick 3) only roughly as good as Coffield and Naughton in their draft (2017), pick 8-9. Maybe marginally better. But not significantly so.

In an open draft of average value he is a pick 7-8 in my view.

So from what I read Lindsay looked like a safe bet. Great disposal, leadership, fantastic traits, so we basically blow that up to go down a few spots, miss him, grab a speculative pick and move up a couple of places for our lottery of a second pick and lose our third pick altogether.

Mental.

Tried to be too cute and it blew up in our face.

🤪

When you miss finals but your 1st pick doesn't land until Pick 22, you do need to manage expectations as to the level of talent you're bringing in. A high floor player in an area of need is a totally okay result at Pick 22.

My limited viewings of him leave me with higher confidence in him making it as a player than I had in Busslinger or Hynes at the time we drafted them.

We moved up one spot, ahead of Carlton

‘Speculative’ and ‘vanilla’. Looks like we’ve got some new buzz words to add to the BF vocabulary alongside the heavily used: ‘campaigner’ and ‘liability’.
