If a club were to play funny buggers and bid on Darcy well before expected, say 30's, do we still have points to match?

4 first round picks for the Suns after a deep finals run. AFL will say they don’t have anyone coming through the academy the next few years, but the damage is done. They needed to tighten the rules much earlier - the Suns were able to keep trading future picks to accumulate 2nds and 3rds this year to match which won’t be allowed next year.

Swans have a good development program, and seem to churn out good defenders through there. Judging by the frantic phone calls in their room after we bid on Carmichael they were trying to get the points to hang on to him, but failed, I think the earlier than expected bid on another of their players caught them out.

For anyone worried about where we landed with our pick and taking a safe “vanilla” player in this draft. This is from The Age in June. “Safe, role-player, vanilla” all sound like good words to me for a selection this year.

Whomever runs the AFL website has either let their grade 5 son upload the photos of players into the draft tracker/draft board or provided a glimpse of the future of AI.

Random player inserted for Dylan Patterson, Dan Annabelle uploaded twice - once for himself and again instead of Sam Cumming, and Dyson Sharp replaced with some skinny dude I haven’t seen enough of this crop to even want to recognise.

One job people…….

So from what I read Lindsay looked like a safe bet. Great disposal, leadership, fantastic traits, so we basically blow that up to go down a few spots, miss him, grab a speculative pick and move up a couple of places for our lottery of a second pick and lose our third pick altogether.

Mental.

Tried to be too cute and it blew up in our face.

🤪

There’s no safe bet in the draft especially at pick 19. If Lindsay was a safe bet he wouldn’t have slid that far.

Maybe hold off on the melt until we’ve seen both at AFL level.

You’re telling me Jack Billings wasn’t the safe bet?

From the small packages I have seen Lindsay looks a better kick Slightly but has half the defensive nouse

The only downside is he went to West Coast so can guarantee he’s at the cats in 2 years time

Not a melt, just not sure that when you don't have a first pick until very late thanks to the ridiculous academias and concessions that you want to be sliding back even a couple of spots. Just seems bizarre.

Anyway, you're right, we'll see.

And we also traded back a couple times our original would’ve been 15
Our original pick was the one used by West Coast at 19 on Josh Lindsay, 2 spots ahead of ours.

We sent it to GWS for their 1st round pick (2 selections later than ours) + picks 37 (used for Budarick). Then traded the GWS 1st rounder + 33 + 53 to Gold Coast for their picks 15 + 29.

We effectively moved down 2 spots in the 1st round to land Budarick and upgrade our 2nd round pick by 4 spots (currently 27).

Sam Allen could be a hidden gem, would’ve likely been a first rounder if it wasn’t for the early ACL. Has all the attributes you want for the modern game. And also has those leadership & character traits we look for.

Upgraded our 2nd round pick 1 spot, and if North bid on Ison and they match, it will be effectively zero spots

I enjoy the draft more after the first round. This is where the recruiters earn their corn, in the trash and treasure market of the later picks.

HCBE = he could be anything

(Assuming we do nothing with our second and use it in the normal fashion) Nope, we'd have to trade a future pick for a live pick in this draft.

If a Bid came at 30, we'd need 39 or better, pick 40 would need 52 or better. (We could use picks a pick or two later and have a small points deficit next year, and the deficit may be so small it doesn't even move our pick).

Pick 42 is basically the wash point where anything after that is a free match.

EDIT: Edited as I didn't realise the discount is fixed at 197 points after the first round.

Hi draft gurus,
Im a draft nuffie.
Can someone explain how 2 years ago we couldnt get Lual due to acandemy picks being after 40 when other academy players went top 10 last night.
Im totally lost, does the AFL make it so complicated that the average punter doesnt understand?

They just change the rules every year to keep you on your toes.

I’m annoyed we only have the one pick left, like really annoyed.
I like the Carmichael pick up but another pick would have been nice

If we really want to be Sydneys friends we should bid on King next

Will be interesting to see if we go tall or small with our next pick considering we are drafting Darcy.

If we are going tall you’d have to think Emmett / Kras, if we are going small I’d think Allen fits what we are looking for. NHH as the forward / mid hybrid could be in the mix.
Would be very early to go with Oskar Ainsworth who we have apparently done plenty of work on but who knows.

If North don't bid on Ison we need to convince Carlton there is a chance we would. What would they give up to switch positions so that they can get another player in before picking up Ison in a matched bid later? No idea if they have the room on their list. Ison was touted to go to Geelong so he is not that far from being bid on by someone.
