Hi draft gurus,
Im a draft nuffie.
Can someone explain how 2 years ago we couldnt get Lual due to acandemy picks being after 40 when other academy players went top 10 last night.
Im totally lost, does the AFL make it so complicated that the average punter doesnt understand?

After JUH went pick 1, the AFL decided that Next Generation Academies specifically were too unbalanced and changed the rules so bids on NGA players couldn’t be matched within the top 40. They changed it back when that rule would have meant Essendon missed out on a top NGA player.

The academy picks matched early last night were all Northern Academy, which were never restricted because Brisbane is just so disadvantaged and really needs the leg up.

Sam Allen could be a hidden gem, would’ve likely been a first rounder if it wasn’t for the early ACL. Has all the attributes you want for the modern game. And also has those leadership & character traits we look for.

Was told we were into a player recovering from injury which i thought could have been Barker but perhaps it's Allan? Similar profile to Carmichael with his competitiveness etc too

They change the rules to keep us guessing.

So from what I read Lindsay looked like a safe bet. Great disposal, leadership, fantastic traits, so we basically blow that up to go down a few spots, miss him, grab a speculative pick and move up a couple of places for our lottery of a second pick and lose our third pick altogether.

Mental.

Tried to be too cute and it blew up in our face.

🤪
Lindsay is not a safe bet, he’s lacking in almost every area bar kicking.

I think they are delusional enough to do something like that as they would fancy themselves a sure finals team which they most definitely are not.
They're definitely all in on the wing now philosophy. I bet on them wanting a draftee now rather in 12 months. I also fully expect they believe that they are a top 4 team next year.

Wonder if we see Jaques as a long term wing with the pick of Carmichael.

Seems like Carmichael could also play a bit of wing from the highlights.
The more players we can rotate through different positions in game the better. Gives us more flexibility & unpredictability. Harder to contain as a unit.
All for these versatile types.
Allen will fit this as well, has played wing but also bits on half back, half forward & was introduced to some inside mid minutes as well prior to injury.

I really like to model of drafting HBF / HFF types who might eventually move inside. Makes it so much easier to get them games early in their career vs Sanders types, and then you probably also get an extra year or 2 at the end of their careers vs pure mids who can’t go elsewhere e.g. Tom Mitchell.

Obviously not everyone will make the transition like Richards, Bergman, Hayden Young, etc. but I still like the model.

I'd be very happy if we landed Sam Allen.

Emmett, Burton or NHH I'd be happy with too.

If we don’t end up with Emmett tonight I’ll be shattered. Clearly the best available. Hopefully North take the Thredgold bait.
First pick on night 2 tends to get a fair bit of attention, North probably fielding trade calls all night for the pick.

Fantastic pick for West Coast though. Their biggest issue right now is ball movement. So often, they win possession of the ball and you can start to catch a glimpse of a competent game plan, but eventually one of the younger/fringe players will undo everything with an errant handball or poorly weighted kick. They desperately need players with clean disposal in the side, more than any other attribute. I think he plays most games next year
