Did the trial BF phantom draft for the saints. This is who I ended up picking for you. Keen to hear feedback.

Pick 9 - St.Kilda - Josh Lindsay - 183cm Defender.

Saints go best available here and get some real class behind the ball, which will work out well with NAS moving into the midfield permanently. Lindsay is a prototype half back who has high footy IQ, excellent decision making, composure and the skill level to cut teams apart. I really wanted Cumming at this pick as I think his versatility would suit your list build perfectly, but he was taken the pick before.

Pick 47 - St.Kilda - Cody Curtin - 200cm Key Forward/Key Defender/Ruck

Saints need some KP depth, and with this selection they get the potential versatility that Curtin brings to the table. With his hulking frame and competitiveness Curtin loves to throw his body into the aerial contests and is a genuine contested marking threat, often taking the ball at the highest point. He needs to make some improvements on his tank and overall athleticism, but after pick 30 he is worth a shot.

Pick 50 (Matched Bid) - St.Kilda - Kye Fincher - 184cm Midfielder

A footballer's footballer...tough, dour and more than willing to put his body on the line. Fincher's season has gone from strength to strength, stepping up to whatever level he is playing at whether it's the Coates League, Champs or VFL, his competitive nature has held him in good stead. As a midfielder he is clean, on touch and uses the ball with reliably, these traits are also evident when he has spent time across half back as well. Fincher also has good balance between his offensive and defensive game, he is one of the more accountable midfielders in this draft and you'll always see him pushing hard to put pressure on the opposition with his defensive running. His footy IQ and competitiveness will hold him in good stead at AFL level, and he might surprise a few with how early he might get an AFL opportunity.
Probably about right.

Thanks for your effort, but Im not keen on Lindsay if we retain our frist pick. He is way too much of an outside player for mine and struggles to win his own footy. He is a great kick when not under pressure, but is very similiar to Brad Hill as soon as there is a hint of pressure his kicking falls away. An outside back flanker is not a list need for us thanks and there will be plenty of other options available if we retain that pick.

I also think we will be very fortunate for Fincher not to be bid on around pick #30-40 mark, but would love another tall like Curtin if we can wrangle one.

That's perfect fair regarding Lindsay, the outside nature of his game is my biggest criticism of him too.

Ideally there will be a Sam Cumming or Sam Grlj type available when the real thing happens. Alternatively, you guys are in that sweet spot, where other teams might come hard to pick up the likes of Schubert. Might end being in a position to trade down a few spots and target a few of the higher upside classy types like J.Phillipou or Hibbins-Hargreaves.

Even Dangerfield grew into his body
This guy seems to have peaked already
Most often not a good sign
A bit like an early 2yo that wins the slipper but never wins a race again , sometimes you need some patience to let the kids grow into their bodies

Just curious what's the knock on Kye Fincher? He's stepped up in every game he's played so I'm wondering why he's not ranked higher? He looked really good playing midfield too

I'm not sure this is worth much, because presumably they talk to a lot of kids in the draft, but my understanding is that through the year we spoke to Cody Curtin and there was a level of interest. Thought it was interesting given you picked him in the mock draft.

you guys need to learn how to procrastinate

while he may not be the best at any one thing (possibly running the lines), he does a lot of things very well. Can win a hard ball and break lines, plays physically, good agility. Will be gone before our pick but I think people are underrating this draft a touch, no standout generational player but lots to work with

I love pace and he's got that in spades.

The rest of Alfooty August draft

If Hawthorn sat there and just bid on 7 consecutive players it would truly be the funniest shit ever. Better would be if they then traded their pick after. Honestly, just taking the full 5 minutes, doing a Jim from the Office shrug, and then bidding on the next player. God damn

Temu Christian Moraes I reckon, who was pick 38 in a great draft. Says it all about this year's quality - which is exactly why I'm not against trading it.

Genuinely its worth trading the first and taking a late pick this year as the ROI will probably be greater

Top end is terrible imo but the back end will still have some gems

Split pick 7 for 9 + 20 and ideally take Ludowyke or a different slider with 20 in addition to Fincher bid and another player with a late pick. Trade 9 for whoever. A+ off-season

JPou and Hibbins-Hargreaves are two of my favourites. I reckon there is a big chance these 2 late first rounders will be just as good as those available up in the top end of the open draft.

We'll probably only have one live selection with Caminiti and Fincher the other 2.

As for Lindsay, he ticks the elite kicking box so I wouldn't be shattered if we selected him, as much as I don't think we'll have our first come draft night.

100% and I was thinking the exact same thing when looking at those rankings. 16-20 all just as promising/risky as the others in the top 10.

Either way, I'd have one of the ready made mids way ahead of our first and hope that mid is either Flanders or Cmac

Yeah I’m with you, I think we should take a swing on Hibbins-Hargreaves. We need the goals, and he’s a smooth mover with pace and good footy smarts. Bit up and down at times, but honestly could have the highest ceiling in the draft.

I very much doubt we will still hold pick #7 after this years trade period. When we look at the contracted players we are chasing, I doubt future picks alone are going to get it done.

What we do know when it comes to pick trading that SOS/Gubby excel and extract the very best result possible. So after all the trades I expect us to possibly hold a late first round pick and depending on when a Fincher bid comes, Im hoping we trade back into the second or early third rounds of the draft.

So until we know what hand we will hold, its just speculation but Ill add a wish list -

Pick #7 = Sam Cumming (best balanced mid)
Pick #30 = Kye Fincher (NGA)
Pick #40 = Cody Curtin (versatile 200cm key position player)

or alternative

Pick #20 = Archie Ludowke (tall forward)
Pick #30 = Kye Fincher (NGA)
Pick #40 = Talor Byrne (small forward/mid) or Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier (midfielder)

Rookie FS = Jackson Voss (productive small defender)

Jackson will go in the national draft, dont be surprised if Tyson Milne gets a rookie spot as well.

Had a bit of a watch on the dragons game. Fincher’s ability to get the ball moving from stoppage was elite especially in the big moments. Showed a great ability to use fast give and go and drove his legs strongly.

Simmilar to what Will Ashcroft does really well.

coming with a rocket. will be interesting to see how recruiters view him in Cal's next form guide, given he was already in the 30-45 bracket as a forward, but that was before he had 40&3 and now 27&2 in a final playing mid/fwd.

still looks very raw with a lot to work on, but it's not unfathomable that Richmond/Essendon with multiple early picks might be tempted to roll the dice in a very bland draft pool. their boards certainly seem to think so at least

You reckon he'll be a midfielder long term?

Yea , if we give him the opportunity. It’s the most important skill in being mid is , driving the legs and moving out of the stoppage. If you can’t do that you’re gonna struggle to be a mid. He has a knack to being on the move of getting the ball going out of stoppages.

Not saying I'm in for the kid but i think we thought the same about Nas in his first few games or so

I think they are very different players, Lindsay is more like another version of Bonner. He simply cant win his own footy and we know how that goes at AFL level.
