With any luck both him and Walker will be pick 1 & 2 next year. With the new rule that you are only allowed to use 2 picks for points that means they'll be have to be early top 10ish picks.
Another reason why we should not be touching our 2026 1st to get back into this draft

The compromised draft next year will help clubs in the 10-25 range

I also have MiniPou sliding to Essendon at 29. I'm predicting the bolters to cause slides to the more speculative top-ranked players ie. Pou, Hibbins-Hargreaves. Maybe trade our F1 to get in? I feel like Essendon would be open to trading out so they can take Adam Sweid bc atm I don't think they have enough list spots for him
Just on this, Cal Twomey saying on SaintsTV that he doesn't think we have to give up as much as an F1 to get in for MiniPou

He also thinks Pou will slide a bit "beyond 15-20" and it sounds like a F2 might be sufficient (probably referring to our 2027 2nd)

Fincher has interest in late 20s and he spoke with some doubt that we match before 36

Cal very much didn’t want to release any names on our pick 50 target

If we land Mini Pou and Fincher for this draft, I will be very happy with that.

here7s the interview

take away for me was how strongly Cal said that a senior coach's, and particularly a veteran coach's, game philosophy definitely affects the list management. I was beginning to wonder if RTB was now in a delegate mold these days, so that's a compass correction for me.

No coincidence that some of the best runners of the past 2 drafts (Wilson, Travaglia, Boxshall) have all landed at St Kilda

Fincher at 39 here

He’s starting to slide in several mocks

Not sure why? was one of the more consistant U18 players.
Good for us though.
Won't cry in my soup though, if we dont pick him
I think there is some talls in this draft who could be steals, e.g Emmett, Hetherton, Murray.

Because clubs seem to be favouring high-upside picks this year. Fincher is more a proven performer without the ceiling of becoming an A-grader. Someone like Sam Allen who's been out of sight pretty much all year with an ACL could go ahead of him purely off potential

What would it cost to trade into the 20-25 part of this draft? 2026 2nd would have done it but we don’t have one. 2027 2nd not worth enough considering Tasmania’s entry?

2026 1st for the Mini Pou pick + that teams F2nd is probably what would have to happen.

Back ourselves in to make that F1st a mid-late teens pick and target a team that we expect to be down the ladder.

North at 25 + 26
Essendon at 21, 27+30

That's where I'd be making phone calls.

Yeah, did a read on Sam Allen, might be worth the punt for us.

Is this code for the draft quality is questionable so we might as well just go for high risk/reward options and hope we sneak one?

Allen is a kid I hadnt heard much of, hence hadnt looked at any of his footage. I just watched the below and wow he is a live wire with an inate ablity to find his team mates while under pressure. Im surprised he hasnt been mentioned more by the media pundits in their phantoms etc.

Yeah he's a gun. It's just that he's been out with ACL all season so he's gone under the radar - hard to generate media attention when you're in rehab!

I think Dalrymple will be all over him - has Max Hall vibes in terms of draft-year injury problems and solves a need as Brad Hill gets on

Could be onto something there. I still reckon Davis for list needs to replace Webster should be a genuine option also.

Jev, Ludowyke, Davis, Allen, Tex, Voss... thats who I'm looking at in addition to Fincher.

I do really like NHH as well, I reckon he could be what we always wanted Billings to be - having said that, his low production is a worry.

Based on the below Clubs really must not rate this draft and/or Carlton were absolutely desperate. I can’t remember a time first rounders this high were going for such a low price.

Per Twomey’s report, Essendon is the “frontrunner” to land the ninth overall selection in a deal that would see it send its late first-rounder (no.21) and early second-rounder (no.27) to the Blues.

Meanwhile, Twomey reports the Blues’ Pick 11 is set to be dealt to North Melbourne, who’s expected to send Pick 25 and a future second-rounder back Carlton’s way.

Interesting if it plays out like this. Means our pick 50 comes in 15 spots. Could squeeze I pick in before fincher

Yeah will be very interesting with Fincher #40, then players like Allen, Holmes, Ainsworth, Dalton, Swadling and Wright available at our later picks.

List wise I think we still need a near 200cm defender to replace Howard, so as much as I like others Ainsworth 198cm (versatile defender) would be my priority. Barrat 194cm taken last year is still developing, but I dont think he can play that much taller to match it with the big forwards. I see him more as JSOS replacement alongside Tauru.

Culmination of multiple factors I think:
  1. Devaluing of picks - only 54 picks have value this year and point-gathering clubs are focusing on 2nd rounders as the value of 3rds have dropped so much
  2. Nominees galore - Gold Coast has already farmed 4 picks in the first round and they're not parting with them, Sydney has 2 in their back pocket, Brisbane will be sniffing around just in case. The list of clubs that have picks that suit Carlton's need for points this year is short (Essendon and North are the only others with multiple 2nd round picks)
  3. Gaps in picks - Building on above, a lot of clubs have a late first round pick but don't have another pick to go with it. Geelong has 19 and 40, Freo has 20 and 47, Adelaide has 16 and 48.
  4. Lack of faith in this year's draft - there are currently 74 active picks available and they never all get used, in contrast there were 99 active picks and 71 got used in last year's "superdraft"
  5. Carlton aren't seeking futures - and even if they were, clubs will be wary of parting with a 2026 pick as it's the last draft before Tassie and the value of a 2027 pick is still very uncertain
