Not against trialling Sparrow as a defender purely because he offers so little in his current role, and our glaring deficiency in that area.

Plus he’s super fit, works hard, kicks long we’ll enough and follows directions well, so it could work.
I don't know who elese we have that can fit that role. He might not work out, but besides AMW who is coming off a serious injury, i don't know who elese can fit that role

I actually reckon our defence is ok tbh.

Petty, Turner, Lever, Howes, Bowey, Jiath, Lindsay, with AMW, Salem, TMac and I reckon even Langdon as options as well.

Something about Sparrow in defence does not excite me. Lack of agility maybe? Not sure.

Not the worst idea - he has a good athletic profile and would probably do much better if he just follows someone to the ball.
Think this hits on the pros and cons of it.

He's no good at getting into dangerous positions forward of the ball, so maybe following someone around suits him better.

But his lack of agility means I can see him being ****ing awful at defending the ground ball. Would be another Salem as soon as the ball hits the deck and it would look absolutely tragic.

Can't believe I just typed so many words about Sparrow. Let's just not play him at all.

Grlj has attracted attention all year for his ability to attack the game with explosive pace and agility, dancing past tacklers and breaking lines. These qualities were backed up by an excellent showing in combine testing. Grlj has largely played through the midfield in his top age season but has shown his versatility playing on a wing or a flank in the past and seems likely to start in an outside role while he develops and adjusts to the pace of AFL play.

I like our key defenders, assuming Petty plays back. But I’m very worried about our small/medium defenders.

Bowey is a gun but is very small.
Howes is questionable at best but may come good.
Jiath has been hit and miss at the Hawks but I’ve high hopes he’ll be a good recruit.
Lindsay is unproven but looks good. Dunno if he’ll be a mid/winger or defender tho.
AMW is massively unproven at AFL level.
Salem is slow and uninspiring and on his last legs.
Langdon’s never played as a defender as far as I’m aware and I can’t imagine him doing that well down back.

So I’m very concerned when we come up against teams that have serious small forward options.

I think you could use just two words to describe him.

Where does this notion AMW is a lock down defender come from?

I’ve seen more of him play than most given I watch almost all Casey games.

AMW was a guy who was a very sporadic forward who got switched into the backline in 2024. He used his pace to run off and receive plenty of the ball, and wasn’t great with his disposal.

I also don’t recall him doing much genuine defending or locking down.

I’d be happy to be proved wrong but for mine AMW is one of these players who due to being injured and not showing what he really is grows an unwarranted reputation.

He’s still very much in the less likely to make it than make it category IMO.

Edit: fixing typos
well you sort of answered your own question. if you can't kick the ball, you're def a lock down defender. But yes, the loss of Mcvee means that we dont have 1 lockdown small-medium defender on the list and opposition small forwards to kick bags of 4-8 goals on us every week this year. But but pick 23 tho...

won't make it to us. next. will go to Richmond with pick 3 or 4.

Small forwards already killed us this year. McVee had plenty of bags kicked on him.

Absolutely could be better, but I'd have small defenders well down the list behind dynamic mids, small forwards and maybe a winger.

Exactly. Hence why it might make sense to trial a bloke like sparrow as a defender.
Reckon we tried him there briefly at one stage and it was no good? Might be not remembering correctly. Doesn't have defender written on him for mine, fair few I'd rather try first - Langdon, AMW, Lindsay, even bloody Sharp or Laurie.

Again though, think we've got enough options to try there without being desperate enough for Sparrow.

Angus Brayshaw would be perfect as half back around about now :(

I stopped reading after you said Petty forward. No, just no.
I'm just not a "everyone in they're own hole", thinker Re AFL.
I believe strongly in players being more than a one-dimensional player.

Petty is our best overhead mark at this stage, until someone else proves otherwise... apart from Maxy of course.

People who only read the part the bits that go along with their thinking are mostly black and white thinkers. And most of the spectrum is the grey between... and the grey between the ears.:)

What is the realistic play for 7 and 8 if there’s no appetite to move the picks as has been stated? Dovaston and any of the more dynamic kids (Grlj, Cumming, Phillipou etc.)? Who is the next up in mind in the event that Grlj, and Cumming are off the board? Do you go for Sharp even though you’ve just brought Steele in? Or do you go for a Farrow, Phillipou etc. who has a lot more to their game but will likely start off a flank?
What is your' West Coasts decisions, Re this draft.?
