Here are some "ifs" that will have an enormous impact on our trade/draft period. If:
1) Warner re-signs (or not of course).
2) Rampe, Adams, Cunningham, Lloyd, Hamling, Fox retire.
3) Edwards and Snell reach full AFL standard. Francis remains handy depth.
4) Buller reaches full AFL standard.
5) McCartin comes good as a forward.
6) Sheldrick, Corey, Campbell, Hanily, Dattoli, Mitchell, Cleary, Paton, Bice reach full AFL standard. I'm assuming Andrew, Bowman, Kirk and Leidler won't yet. A fair number won't get the chance to show it.
7) Anyone requests a trade. Hard to see it but maybe Gus?
The decision tree that grows out of those is enormous let alone what happens with our likely 4 academy boys and the draft under the new rules. Huge headache!

Stating the obvious but signing Warner soon would be massive

Anything else positive and unexpected would be a bonus

That's the way build a big lead before the big day

I am zero chance mate.

All these trades depend on Chad’s decision it’s that simple.

People wanting Aleer, Sullivan etc are going to not be happy. We do not have the capital to spend picks this year, we likely need more i.e the reason we split our first rounder (Essendon or wce the ideal candidates). If Chad stays it’s likely auction our first this year and maybe our second to improve our points value and that’s it.

Easy year to pick:

In:
Max King (draft)
Noah Chamberlain (draft)
Lachlan Carmichael (draft)
Skinny flanker (draft)
Skinny flanker (PSD)
Fox (rookie listed, yet again)
Mason Wood (trade)
Mature age VFL player (MSD)

Out:
Warner (trade to West Coast)
Sheldrick (trade to West Coast)
Rampe (retired)
Mitchell (delisted)
Ladhams (delisted)
Fox (delisted)
Hamling (delisted)
Buller (delisted)

Can close the thread now (sorry LukeParkerno1 )

Up there with our lawyers and psychologists.

More busts than …. Nah I won’t say that.

Time for serious roasting. We’ve got about as much depth as a bird bath. No serious forwards, no serious backs and nearly all our first rounds are a bust.

How can you get it so wrong for so long. I fear the wilderness is approaching. We need more talented talent scouts.

I like fast players.

I sure hope you're incorrect!

If you look back im pretty sure Mills is the 5th more recent complete inside midfielder we drafted and he was a decade ago.
  • Caiden Cleary
  • Angus Sheldrick
  • Chad Warner
  • James Rowbottom
  • Callum Mills
  • George Hewett
  • Tom Mitchell
  • Luke Parker

I may have missed a couple of players that didn't kick on (as I am a youngster) but thats it for pure on ballers in the last 17 years, 8 players across 17 years is pathetic

Are we talking about the selectors? Week to week. Coaching group mainly.

Or the recruiting team?

Can we say they got it wrong when they have made 2 grand finals in 3 years- yes they shat the bed but you can't get crap lists to the big one.

I think JHWF’s comment is more that we have a big cliff coming if we can’t do better at:

(a) the draft; and
(b) developing drafted players

I think our VFL leadership has been awful in recent years. Nobody is really developing in our VFL side - they’d be better off playing and learning at one of the non-affiliated VFL clubs.

As for the draft, we’ve been saved by later round picks. You can’t keep busting in the first round and expecting it won’t eventually come back to bite.

Yes we can. Look at our depth vs other contenders. Talented list for sure but zero depth. Making a GF is an outpeform - fact is we can’t even point to any senior guy under pressure from the ressies. Florent discussion confirms this.

Where is our Darcy Jones, Finn Callaghan etc etc.

And we've had a level of sustained success over the past decade and a half that's the envy of nearly every club in the league. That's not an accident.

Ridiculous thread.

Is that because of our recruitment success ? Hence the point of the thread. I give Recruiters zero credit for academy picks. Please regale me with our first round champions over the years.

How are you measuring it? Gulden, Campbell and Stephens all played inside in their draft year.

While we have had players who played on the wing in their draft year (like Roberts, Mitchell and Vickery) however plenty of times players don't end up in their positions they do as kids. Serong was a small forward when drafted, now he's a brilliant inside mid

If we trade Warner we are taking pick 1/2 to the draft live

If you are second you are last…just with a worse draft pick
